A Newsletter for Stony Point Families

Thank you for attending Dragon Dinner!
Dragon Dinner was a HUGE success! We are thrilled that so many families were able to come together as a Stony Point family to share dinner, play games together, strengthening old friendships, and foster new connections. Check out some photos from the event below!
W.I.N. Time at Stony Point
To meet this requirement, students in grades 3-5 began W.I.N. (What I Need) time on Mondays through Thursdays from 1:45-2:15 PM. Students who qualify receive small group tutoring in either reading or math (Ms. Holmes tutors third grade math while Ms. Uzzell tutors third grade reading; Ms. Ewers tutors fifth grade math while Ms. Fleming tutors fifth grade reading). For fourth grade, since there is one classroom teacher, Ms. McGill and Ms. Gately tutor fourth grade math while Ms. Anish tutors fourth grade reading.
Students in grades 3-5 who do not qualify for the tutoring are working on building their writing fluency, producing authentic on-demand writing, and engaging in the writing process to create various pieces through a home-grown writing program with Ms. Jensen and Ms. Fielding.
If you are unsure about if your child is receiving tutoring or other academic supports, please reach out to your child's teacher.

Family Corner: Addressing Competition
We are noticing an uptick in competition among students (on the soccer field, playing football, being in line "first", etc.) which at times can lead to aggression. While competition is a natural and even necessary aspect of many social systems, it's essential we all work together to help students manage and channel competitive tendencies in constructive ways to prevent escalation and conflict. Strategies we are incorporating at school to promote conflict resolution, cooperation, and empathy in order to mitigate the negative effects of competition include:
- Class morning meetings that focus on belonging, collaboration, significance, and fun
- Lessons and morning meeting activities that focus on cooperation and teamwork for administrators to help facilitate with grade levels
- Exploring role-playing tricky situations with Ms. Corpora (our school counselor) and Mr. Will (our social emotional learning coach) to help students build their strategies
We know that supporting our students truly takes a village and want to provide you with information and resources to support your children with this at home. Click HERE to check out a short article that includes helpful tips and suggestions.
Stay tuned for future topics, articles, podcasts, and supports in this new Family Corner section of The Thunder!
