WELCOME BACK
It was great seeing so many students and families back in the building on the 15th! We are looking forward to our return to school!
This Monday, we will be welcoming our 6th graders into the building for our WEB Orientation Day. Thank you to all our 8th grade WEB students, as well as Mrs. Walls and Mrs. Peplinski, for all the work they have put in to prepare for the big day.
When students arrive to school on Tuesday, we will have a new copy of their student schedule available with their locker combination information as well. Tuesday is a half day with classes starting at 8:17am and ending at 11:53am. The building opens daily at 7:50am daily.
We have a few new faces in the building that I would like to introduce as well. Please join me in welcoming the following new Smith staff members:
- Michelle Black - Academic Support Paraprofessional
- Brad Ciaramitaro - Science 7 and 8
- Katie Kavanagh - Special Education
- Kristi Lewis - Art
- Jaynie Millett - Band / Orchestra
- Ryan Quinn - Orchestra
- Tabitha Shaw - ELD Specialist
- Elizabeth Taylor - Special Education Paraprofessional
Please take a few minutes to review our Smith Back-to-School Packet linked below which includes important information, school bell schedules, and school policies:
6th GRADE WEB DAY!
WEB Day will run from 9:00am - 1:00pm here at Smith and is led by our staff and our 8th grade student WEB leaders.
Troy Schools will be providing bus transportation along their normal bus routes. Buses will pick up students approximately 40 minutes later than the time posted on PowerSchool. Families should now be able to see their bus times and locations.
Our cafeteria will be serving a free lunch for all students, but students are welcome to bring their own lunch as well. Details on the menu will be shared out as soon as we have them.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PTO
The Smith PTO is made of parents dedicated to enhancing students' experiences during their middle school years. Teacher grants, school dances, Media Center materials, and our annual Field Day are just a few things the PTO helps bring to life.
The PTO exists because of your help and effort. Please consider making a one-time contribution of $30 to the Smith PTO. If you're a Venmo user, find the PTO @SmithKnightsPTO; if you're not a Venmo user, please make a check out to Smith PTO and send it to the school office.
If you're keen on contributing your time or energy to the PTO, we'd love to make you a part of the group. Please email Scott Timmreck (scott.timmreck@gmail.com) for more information on how you can help. Or...come to a meeting to see what we're about! The first gathering is Wednesday, September 11, and the schedule for the rest of the school year is:
September 11
October 9
November 6
December 11
February 5
March 5
April 9
May 7
May 28
Meetings are in the Smith Media Center, start at 6:30pm, and last approximately one hour. We hope you can join us!
8th GRADE IPAD REFRESH
We are excited to announce that district issued iPads will be refreshed for our 8th grade students this school year. If your 8th grader did not get their new iPad on August 15, they will be able to swap their old iPad for a new one starting the week of September 2. We will be organizing that process during the school day.
STUDENTS ATTENDING HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES AT TROY HIGH
For students attending classes at Troy High, families should have received an email with details from Mrs. VanDyck. If you have any additional questions, please call our main office on Monday or Tuesday.
Items to note:
- Students' first day of high school classes will be Wednesday, August 28. Smith students will only attend their middle school classes on Tuesday, August 27. Students can report to the cafeteria as Smith during 1st hour on Tuesday.
- Transportation is provided from Troy High to Smith after 1st hour on Bus 52, which departs Troy High at approximately 8:25am.
- Students will not report to Troy High for any half days on our calendar this school year.
SMITH CELL PHONE POLICY REMINDER FOR 2024-2025
Our Smith cell phone policy for the 24-25 school year will remain the same. Our policy is meant to help provide a better experience and learning environment for our students. This included limiting distractions, improving face-to-face communication skills, and building more collaborative classrooms. Limiting cell phone usage has decreased the incidents of inappropriate cell phone behavior in the building and helps to promote better physical and mental well-being for our students.
Please take a few minutes to review our policy with your student:
Cell phones and all other related electronic devices, including headphones, must be powered off and out of sight from the start of 1st hour until the end of the school day (including lunch and hall passing time) unless students are given permission from administration. Students are expected to use the office phone to contact home.
If a phone or other device is taken away by an adult, the following applies:
- 1st Violation – phone given to office, picked up by student at the end of day
- 2nd Violation – phone given to office, picked up by parent at the end of day
- 3rd Violation – phone given to office, picked up by parent at the end of day, student issued a detention
Additionally, we strongly encourage students to keep their AirPods and other headphones at home. These devices will be confiscated during the school day as well. If there is a particular day where headphones are needed for a class, our staff will let students know in advance.
