AMS Weekly Update
Monday, January 13-Friday, January 17, 2025
There is no school on Monday, January 20th as we observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day. School will resume on Tuesday, Janaury 21, 2025. Students will attend their first hour class, and will be issued their new schedule for Semester II.
As the weather has turned bitterly cold, we want to remind you of a few important procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of all our students.
Morning Arrival
The breakfast doors will not open until 7:20 AM. Please ensure your child is not dropped off earlier, as we cannot guarantee supervision or provide shelter before this time.Afternoon Pickup
Students who are picked up after school are not permitted to wait inside the building. Our staff members have after-school meeting and coaching obligations, leaving no adult supervision available for students remaining in the building. We kindly ask that you plan for prompt pickup at dismissal time to avoid students waiting outside in the cold.
Winter Sports Updates:
Girls basketball and wrestling are in full swing, and this year we’re thrilled to introduce a new addition... our sideline cheer team! They’ll be cheering on our girls as they dominate the court. We’re excited to debut this new sport at Adams!
Celebrating Student Success:
Congratulations to all our students for their hard work and perseverance throughout Semester One. We are proud of their efforts and achievements! Looking ahead, students will soon take their NWEA tests. These assessments are an opportunity to show growth and progress. We encourage our students to put forth their best effort as they aim to meet or exceed their individual goals.
Exciting Activity Day Incentive:
To reward students for their hard work, those who meet or exceed 2 or more of their NWEA goals and have no suspensions will be invited to participate in a special Activity Day! Students with excessive tardies will not eligible to attend! This celebration will take place on Friday, February 14th during 5th and 6th hour and will include a variety of student-choice activities, such as:
Watching Movies
Participating in a Valentine’s Day-Themed Dance
Playing Basketball
Pizza
Playing Games in the Library
Making Valentine’s Day Crafts
Student Council will be selling snacks
We hope this incentive motivates students to do their very best on the upcoming assessments!
Thank you for your continued support in making this school year a success. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Go Adams!
Warmest wishes,
Mrs. Bukosky and Mrs. Abbott

Bus Cancellations
If your child's bus is canceled, please make sure to inform the school by calling the attendance line or emailing our counseling secretary Mrs. Chene. Let them know that the absence is due to a bus cancellation. The secretary will mark your child's attendance with a "B" for bus cancellation, which will not count against them for truancy purposes. chenek@wwcsd.net

Raising Resilient Children
Math Department
This month, 7th graders will begin learning about rational numbers, including both positive and negative fractions and decimals. They will practice performing operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with these numbers, focusing on how negative signs affect the results of calculations.
This month, 8th graders will continue to explore two-step equations this month, building on their previous knowledge. In addition to solving equations, they will now incorporate combining like terms and using the distributive property to simplify expressions and solve for unknown variables.
An important upcoming event this month is the Winter NWEA assessment, which will help measure students' academic progress and identify areas for growth in their math skills.
Instructional focus this month will involve using anchor charts to visually support students' understanding of key concepts. These charts will serve as helpful references for solving equations, performing operations with rational numbers, and applying new mathematical strategies.
Parents can support their 7th graders at home by encouraging them to practice operations with negative numbers in real-world contexts. For example, parents can use temperature changes (e.g., if the temperature is 5°C and drops by 8°C, what is the new temperature?) or financial scenarios like balancing a bank account (e.g., if you have a balance of -$12 and deposit $20, what is your new balance?). Providing opportunities for students to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with both positive and negative numbers can strengthen their understanding.
For 8th graders, parents can assist by helping them solve two-step equations through both practice and discussion. For instance, for an equation like 3x + 5 = 14, parents can guide students in isolating the variable (subtract 5 from both sides, then divide by 3). Additionally, parents can encourage their child to apply the distributive property by using examples such as simplifying expressions like 2(3x + 4) = 12. Discussing how combining like terms works in both equations and expressions can also reinforce these skills. Parents could offer extra practice by providing simple word problems or involving the student in activities that require math skills, like shopping (e.g., calculating discounts or figuring out total costs).
Music
This week band & orchestra students completed their chair placement auditions. This will determine their chair placement and will be their first significant grade of the second semester. Information about auditions was sent out before winter break.
Students enrolled in “Intro” level classes have one more performance this year, which will be held at WMHS in Stockmeyer auditorium on Thursday, May 15 at 7pm. Students in “Concert” level classes have 3 more performances including the May concert– Band & Orchestra Festival will be held in late February/early March and the WWCSD Collage Concert will be held in mid-March. Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available!
Please continue to encourage your students to practice at least 2.5 hours a week at home! Have them break up the practice into 15-30 minute sessions throughout the week.
ELA
What’s Going On In ELA:
As the semester closes we are wrapping up our unit on drama. The students explored different types of plays, character development, and the similarities and differences between drama and fiction. The students also polished their writing skills by writing persuasive essays.
Next Up: Non-Fiction
After drama, we will dive into the world of non-fiction! Students will learn about real events, people, and ideas through various texts, including biographies, articles, and essays. This unit will help them understand how to analyze information and express their thoughts clearly.
NWEA Testing Next Week:
A reminder that NWEA testing begins next week with Reading and Language. Please ensure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a healthy breakfast on test days. This is a great opportunity for them to show what they’ve learned and how much they’ve grown academically. Good luck to all our students!
Congratulations to Our Spelling Bee Winners!
We are thrilled to announce the grade level spelling bee winners! They will represent Adams at the District Spelling Bee on Wednesday, February 12th at 10:00 AM here at Adams. We are so proud of their hard work and dedication. Let’s cheer them on as they compete against our other two middle schools.
