Pilgrim Weekend!
Worship & Announcements
21st Sunday after Pentecost, Lectionary 28 year B
1Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son.~Hebrews 1:1-2*
*We will begin the book of Hebrews starting on Sunday through the end of the liturgical year (last day being Christ the King Sunday on November 24)
PREPARING FOR SUNDAY
The rich man who comes to ask Jesus what he should do to inherit eternal life is a good man, sincere in his asking. Mark’s gospel is alone in saying that Jesus looked on him and loved him. Out of love, not as judgment, Jesus offers him an open door to life: sell all you own and give it to the poor. Our culture bombards us with the message that we will find life by consuming. Our assemblies counter this message with the invitation to find life by divesting for the sake of the other.

Weimar Altarpiece by Lucas Cranach the Elder and his son Lucas Cranach the Younger between 1552 and 1555 for the Church of St. Peter und Paul in Weimar, Germany.
Altar in church in Germany depicts Lutheran legacies: Christ as the center of our lives. To the right John the Baptizer is pointing to Jesus, Luther points to Sola Scriptura, and in between is the artist Lucas Cranach the Elder, humbly washed by Christ’s blood.

Upcoming Commemorations
Teresa of Avila, teacher, renewer of the church, died 1582
Tuesday, October 15, 2024
A mystical writer and reformer of the monastic order (Carmelites) to which she belonged, Teresa may also be commemorated with John of the Cross on December 14. Latino Christians traditionally remember her on this date.
Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch, martyr, died around 115
Thursday, October 17, 2024
Ignatius was the second bishop of Antioch in Syria, the city where the name "Christians" originated. Ignatius is known to us from his letters, which encouraged Christians to live in love, yet stand firm in true doctrine.
St. Luke, Evangelist
Friday, October 18, 2024
Identified as the author of both Luke and Acts, Luke was careful to place the events of Jesus' life in their social and religious contexts. His gospel gives us some of the most beloved parables, as well as the songs of Zechariah, Mary, the angels, and Simeon. PICTURED
