JCHS

State testing is upon us again. From February 27th through March 9th, all 10th graders and some 9th graders will be tested in English, Math, and Science. These tests are a part of the graduation requirement per the state of Indiana, and we'll do everything we can to ensure a positive testing environment for our students. We will be following a similar format to last year in that we'll dedicate a portion of our morning to testing so that no students are missing classwork or class-time. We also are offering frozen yogurt to any sophomore who attends each day of testing in a specific content area. We hope that students will be encouraged to come each day and do their very best.

We were able to celebrate several times over the last few weeks with Maverick Challenge winners, a National Merit Finalist (Tyler A. Vogel), and several athletic successes with a diver at the IHSAA State championships and two wrestlers at the State championships. Our lady Panther basketball team lost out in the sectional championship game in what turned out to be a very special and inspiring end to their season as they were legitimate underdogs going into the tournament. Spring practices are underway, and we are looking forward to an exciting spring-sports season as well.

We just concluded our FFA week with special activities and dress-up days, and we'll be celebrating Youth Art Month in March, 3/1 to 3/14. Our students and staff continue to do great things.

Lastly, Spring Break will be the last week of March, 3/27 to 3/31, so plan accordingly. And, don't forget, Daylight Savings Time is this weekend, so remember to turn those clocks forward on Sunday.

Nathaniel Gootee, 1st place winner along with his partner Tylor Bennett. Tylor was unable to make the big check presentation. Their business concept, N&T, Inc. will produce the G-Shield; a revolutionary gas cap to help prevent the wrong fuel from entering vehicles gas tank.

Introduction to Business is a one semester course that give students an overall of the different areas of business such as Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resource Management, Management, Business Law, and Leadership. Right now students have been learning about what it takes to be an entrepreneur and how to start their own business. We will soon be moving into the basics of marketing and learning how businesses price their products or services as well as how they advertise.

The JCHS Concert Choir will be performing their showcase on March 21
at 7:00 PM in the Don Pelkey Auditorium. The evening will be full of
songs from various genres including the always favorites "Sweet
Caroline" and "The Lord Bless You and Keep You."
This concert gives us a chance to feature our singers individual
talents as well. There will be ten small ensembles performing that
evening, too. It is sure to be an evening full of great
entertainment! Tickets will be sold at the door.

A Touch of Class will be heading to The Big Apple with the JCHS Jazz
Band during spring break. Both groups will be performing at Trump
Towers, visiting Ellis Island, Ground Zero memorial and much more.

JCHS Jazz Band is headed to New York City over Spring Break! They will be performing at Trump Tower, seeing two Broadway shows, touring the Statue of Liberty, 9/11 Museum and Ground Zero, among many other educational and memorable things! Best of luck with a great trip and stellar performance, guys!

Saturday Classics is a JCHS World Languages department Community Service Project. High school and elementary students in grades K-3 are paired to create an educational and interactive time in which they can learn French, German, and Spanish phrases, songs, numbers, and colors. Students will also taste ethnic food, do crafts, and learn about foreign cultures.

Upper-level French and Spanish students are planning a field trip to the Indianapolis Museum of Art on April 5th. The students will be guided by a docent knowledgeable in European Art as well as the language.

Health – Health classes finished up with the body systems and poster projects. The current unit consists of information on personality, building self-esteem, stress management, mental disabilities, suicide prevention, and where to find help within the community. Students will create a brochure over stress management that highlighted common issues among teens.

PE – Freshman PE classes are currently in the pickle ball unit. Some consider this a giant game of ping pong and enjoy the fast paced action. Coach Z has been known for his pickleball/badminton skills! The PE classes will also be looking forward to the popular skating unit that is coming up soon.

Strength & Conditioning – Students are currently finishing up their max lifts for the major core lifts: squat, power clean, dead lift, and bench press. These maxes will be recorded to show growth throughout the school year. Students have been able to go outside to run lately because of nice weather, which is always encouraging as spring approaches. Students will continue to work and get stronger/faster for the upcoming spring season.

Geometry Classes Learn About Navigational Tool

Mr. Johnter Raymer’s Geometry classes have recently been studying the right triangle ratios of trigonometry. They have spent time in class applying their knowledge building sextants. A sextant is a tool used in navigation to measure the angle between two objects. Sextants can also be used to find the distance between celestial objects and the horizon or other celestial objects.

The sextants were made using two mini-mirrors, two rulers, a protractor and mounting putty. Working in small groups of two or three, students marked a reference point by placing a post-it note on the chalkboard and then used the double reflections of the mirrors to find the point. They measured the angles given the different lengths and compared the angles as the lengths or sides of the triangle changed.

Through this project the students were able to find many examples of the trigonometric ratios they previously learned in class. They were also introduced to a real-life application of the mathematics they are studying.

The yearbook class is documenting "Our Journey through 2017" and that includes covering student life, sports, and academics. The class has a goal of getting every single student in the book.

English 10 students are working on analyzing and writing argument essays. This is a new concept for many students as argument is a new standard for language arts in Indiana. Students are reading opinions about current topics in the news and looking for appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos and more.

The English 9 teachers had their students create their own personal versions of masks similar to the ones Romeo, Juliet, and their friends would have worn to the Capulets' Ball. Students researched the masks and were given plain ones along with various decorative materials to create their own. What a cool idea!?! Great work, teachers and students.

The social studies department will be adding a new course for the 2017-18 school year. Advanced Placement European History will be an option for sophomore students who are high ability or enrolled in honors level English.

As described by the College Board, “The AP European History course focuses on developing students’ understanding of European history from approximately 1450 to the present. The course has students investigate the content of European history for significant events, individuals, developments, and processes in four historical periods, and develop and use the same thinking skills and methods (analyzing primary and secondary sources, making historical comparisons, chronological reasoning, and argumentation) employed by historians when they study the past. The course also provides five themes (interaction of Europe and the world; poverty and prosperity; objective knowledge and subjective visions; states and other institutions of power; and individual and society) that students explore throughout the course in order to make connections among historical developments in different times and places.”

Students travel to classrooms and offices selling coffee as a part of job-skills development.
