JANUARY 2025
Principal's Message
As we wrap up January, we want to take a moment to recognize and appreciate the dedication of our students, staff, and families. This month has certainly brought its share of weather-related challenges, but through it all, your commitment to learning and teaching has helped keep the educational experience at Western as smooth and uninterrupted as possible.
A special thank you to our athletic department for their flexibility in adjusting practice and game schedules to ensure our student-athletes could continue to compete and grow in their sports. Your hard work does not go unnoticed.
We are grateful for this incredible community and look forward to a great February ahead. Thank you for all you do!
Go Panthers!
Mr. Edwards

Winterfest Welcomed at Western
The Western Student Council hoped to break up the winter blues by hosting a week of fun: Winterfest. Students participated in dress up days, a pep rally, and a dance. Although the weather resulted a few events being nixed, the students enjoyed the fun. At the basketball game, the Winterfest court was presented. Seniors Isabelle Wunderlich and Seun Oguntoye were crowned King and Queen. Below, teams compete in the mattress relay during the pep rally. Junior Katherine DiPaola slides down the court.
STUDENT OF THE MONTH
January Student of the Month
Anh Nguyen was nominated by Mr. Harmesen and named the January Student of the Month. Mr. Harmsen stated, "I am really excited to nominate Anh for student of the month because of her high level of academic curiosity and her consideration for others. Since being rather new to Western, she has come on very quietly and has stretched herself in many ways. With plans of being a high school social studies teacher someday, she has decided to challenge herself academically with multiple AP classes her senior year to prepare herself best for her next step in higher education. Her commitment to the challenge has led to straight A's for two semesters straight. As a counselor, I have always been impressed with her quiet self-confidence and her ability to engage in thought provoking conversations. One of my favorite things about Anh is how she blends with many groups and seems to seek out those who need a friend. She is going to be a tremendous teacher someday and I am very proud to nominate her for this award!"
SPOTLIGHT: NEW TEACHER
KATIE ANDERSON - AG
Ms. Anderson is the new Agriculture teacher at WHS. She also will be assuming leadership of FFA. A graduate of Hamilton Heights, Ms. Anderson is familiar with the opportunities 4-H and FFA can provide to high school students. Her involvement in these activities fueled her desire to “share [her] passion for the Agriculture industry with the students so that they learn and understand how much of an impact agriculture not only has on us, but the whole world in many different ways.” She pursued her interest in agriculture at Purdue where she received a Bachelor of Science with a minor in Animal Science. She also enjoys “going to livestock shows, Purdue basketball games, and spending time with [her] family.”
SPOTLIGHT: FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT
LADINA LEUENBERGER - SWITZERLAND
Ladina is finishing her senior year at WHS, coming to the United States from Switzerland. She decided to participate in the foreign exchange program to improve her English and “experience the American dream.” Living in Indiana and experiencing all that the students at Western experience has been like “living in a movie.” She has jumped right in since last fall, participating in girls soccer and basketball, as well as the Spanish and SADD clubs.
