Madrona Monthly Newsletter
May 2nd, 2024
Hello Madrona Community!
Welcome to the month of May!
This month, we have several exciting community events happening in our school. Next week is Staff Appreciation Week! We are partnering with our PTSA to honor our amazing staff with breakfast, lunch, and some special gifts. I'm sure your child's teacher would love it if you reached out to them and expressed your appreciation. You can connect with them in person at the gate, write a kind email, or a handwritten note. Let's show our staff how much they mean to us!
During the week of May 20th - 24th, we'll be kicking off our Spring Scholastic book fair. Please stop by our library and visit our fair anytime between 7:30 am to 3:30 pm daily. If you're unable to attend, please consider setting up an eWallet for your student to shop at the fair. Using an eWallet is a hassle-free way for students to purchase books. Also, to ensure every student in our community is able to participate in our fair, we created a community based eWallet for families to donate funds for students in our community. Mr. Kirk and I will make sure these funds are utilized equitably across our school. Here is the link: https://shop.scholastic.com/ewallet/fund?lang=en_US&walletId=382800c0-8be4-49ff-b5b4-b9875c8256f8. Mr. Kirk would like volunteers to support with our Spring book fair. Please email him at: kjvanirvin@seattleschools.org if you are available.
Also, on May 23rd from 5:30 -7:00 pm, we are hosting our Annual Multicultural Night. This event is open to everyone in our community. There will be student performances, family presentations, delicious food, and great company. Our volunteers will begin setting up for this event at 4:00 pm. If you would like to bring a cultural dish to share, please bring your dish to the cafeteria at 5:00 pm. Families will be admitted into the building at 5:30 pm. Hope to see everyone at this amazing event.
Please read the rest of our newsletter to learn more about what is happening in our great community. Thank you for your continued support!
Best Wishes,
Principal Carter

Communication from our Specialist
Art
We have been learning about 3-dimensional art the last few months. Students have enjoyed learning how to weave with both paper and fibers, and they are currently building sculptures with cardboard and Paper Mache. Next up, students will learn sewing and fiber arts. Soon students will be bringing their art creations home to share with family and friends.
I am excited that once again this month, several students will have their artwork featured on billboards throughout Seattle. While walking, biking, or driving around town, you just might see some Madrona student artwork displayed on a billboard in the neighborhood!
General Music
During this month of May, Kindergarten through 5th grade music students will be learning about Asian, Asian-American and Pacific Island music and musicians in honor of AAPI heritage month. More specifically, children will learn about the culture and folk songs from the Philippines, the Hawaiian Islands, Java, Taiwan, India & more!
Physical Education
This month in PE we will be conducting our fitness testing. Throughout the year, students have been introduced to the five components of fitness, which include: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Students in grades K-2 will get introduced to the tests by practicing them, while students grade 3-5 will have the opportunity to improve their scores in each test. Tests include: 15-meter pacer (beep test), curl ups, push-ups, and the sit and reach.
Thank you
