Embracing Diversity, Promoting Kindness, & Celebrating Black History
Celebrating Black History Month
Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people of U.S history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early seventieth century, to African Americans living in the U.S today. Black History Month continues this discussion of current famous African Americans today and their contributions through activities such as museum exhibits and film screenings, and by encouraging the study of achievements by African Americans year round.
Among the notable figures often spotlighted during Black History Month, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who fought for equal rights for Blacks during the 1950s and '60s; Thurgood Marshall, the first African American justice appointed to the United States Supreme Court in 1967; Mae Jemison, who became the first female African American astronaut to travvel to space in 1992; and Barack Obama, who was elected the first ever African American president of the United States in 2008.
How to Discuss Black History, Kindness, & Diversity at Home
There are so many ways we can incorporate self love into our daily routines as well as love and appreciation for other cultures. Ms. Alexa's favorite way to discuss topics that might be hard for us to articulate is to use literature to start the conversation for us. Diversity in literature we expose our children to is crucial to their development of many different social-emotional learning skills including compassion, empathy, and inclusion. As a white educator, there are experiences that Ms. Alexa has never gone through and will never understand, however, using these tools has allowed her schools to continue conversations about acceptance, loving ourselves and where we come from, and learning about each other.

Sick Policy
With all of the sicknesses we have had this past season, please ensure your children are fever-free when dropping them off. If you do get a diagnosis of a sickness, please let us know!
