A Message from the Principal
Dear ALMS Families,
I hope you enjoyed your Mother's Day if you celebrated! We had a wonderful week here with a Spirit Week and the final days of our NYS testing. Our 8th graders were great and we wish them the best of luck on the Science exam. Thank you to all the teachers, students, and administrators that helped to make it such a smooth process. This concludes our NYS testing window, and we now look forward to the plenty end of year events, finals, and more!
Please see below for information on summer offerings an updated finals schedule and the newest Teacher Feature from the Media Club. We added even more flyers for even more events that are popping up by the day! Be sure to scroll through our whole newsletter to see what is offered!
Next week we will start to welcome some of our Elementary feeder schools to visit our building! We are excited to show them what we have to offer them in the coming years!
Also, note all of the upcoming events! May is packed with trips, fairs, and ceremonies! We are excited to celebrate all of our students as we approach the end of the school year! Next week we will focus on College and Career week, where our students will learn more about all the opportunities college can offer our young scholars!
Note to 8th grade parents: There is still time to purchase tickets for the 8th grade dance! See details below.
A note to all 7th graders - Playland money and permission slips are due by Monday 5/20. Please return all signed permission slips and the required payment of $40 cash OR check (made out to "Albert Leonard Middle School") to your 7th period teacher this coming Monday! Thank you for your cooperation! If you have any questions, please let Ms. Bongo (mbongo@nredlearn.org) and/or Mr. Silviotti (msilviotti@nredlearn.org) know!
Finally, please remember that due to the lack of used inclement weather days, we will have no school on Friday, May 24th and Tuesday May, 28th, in addition to the regularly scheduled Memorial Day Monday, May 27th. So do enjoy the (extra) long weekend once it reaches us!
Warm regards,
Dr. Edwards-Thomas

Courage to Remember
On May 14th, 15th and 16th, students in 8th grade Social Studies classes participated in an important learning activity held in the Junior Auditorium at Albert Leonard. The Social Studies Department partnered with the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center to bring in their Courage to Remember poster exhibit. As part of their studies of WWII, students learned about the causes and impact of the Holocaust and then further deepened their understanding by walking through this poignant, informational exhibit while answering questions provided by the Social Studies 8 teachers. This analysis and subsequent classroom discussions seek to help students become informed, understanding and morally committed individuals who will seek to prevent such persecution from ever happening again.

Huguenot Academy Announcement!
Teacher Feature - Mr. Argila
Dear Parents/Guardians:
We hope all is well with you and your family. It felt like yesterday when our eighth-grade students came to us as eager sixth graders. As the start of their final marking periods of middle school approaches, we are looking ahead to the next phase of their lives.
Over the last few weeks and moving forward, we have been ramping up our efforts to prepare them for their transition to high school. This includes meeting with their counselors for course selection and a virtual orientation for families and parents that provides greater insight into life at New Rochelle High School.
The 8th-grade year culminates with a series of activities designed to celebrate the achievements of our students. These include the 8th-grade Formal Dance at the VIP Country Club, a day trip to Holiday Hill, Awards Night, and the Transition Ceremony. The dates and costs for each event are in this message. Please look for further details on each event as the dates approach.
Throughout your child’s time here, they have been held to our school's highest academic rigor and expectations. We want to remind you that basic requirements must be met to participate in any/all end-of-year eighth-grade activities. Participation in these events is contingent upon students meeting behavioral and academic standards. Please note the following:
Academic Exclusions:
● Students with failures in two or more major academic subjects will be excluded from participation in 8th Grade Activities
Behavioral Exclusions:
● Students who continually engage in violations of the code of conduct
● Students who demonstrate ongoing rude and disrespectful behavior towards adults and others
● Students who continue to be late and or attempt to cut class
If you are concerned that your child may not meet the academic and/or behavioral qualifications/expectations, please contact your school counselor. Mr. Smith, the 8th-grade Administrator, can field any inquiries about your child's eligibility for participation in upcoming events.
We look forward to the coming months and exciting times ahead. Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Edwards-Thomas, Principal
Mr. Smith, Assistant Principal
Ms. Carew and Ms. D’Ippolito, 8th Grade Co-Advisors
