September 8, 2024
We had a wonderful short week this week! We were able to celebrate our Habit for September which is to Be Proactive. We hope that you have a chance to talk with your child about what that means and let them tell you what they think it means. Throughout this month, we will have opportunities for you to be involved for your child at school. We look forward to starting a Parent Lighthouse Team that will help support our teachers and our students! Also, we will have our first All Pro Dad this month. This can be any parent or guardian that wants to attend. I will be speaking at this event and look forward to sharing more about this program that we will have at Crosswell. Make sure to RSVP so we can have a biscuit for you!
I hope you all had a great weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow morning!

Need Books? Shop the Book Fair September 9-13! See below!
The Scholastic Book Fair will be at Crosswell the week of September 9-13! Students will be able to go during their class library times. However, the book fair will be open for students and their families to shop from 7:30-8:00 AM and 2:30-3:00 PM. The Book Fair will also be open during Open House!
Parents, we would love volunteers who could help with setting up, helping students as they shop, and taking down the book fair. Contact Mrs. Osbey at bintaosbey@pickens.k12.sc.us if you would like to volunteer! You must have completed volunteer training in order to help.

Want to Get More Involved? Join Our Parent and Community Lighthouse Team!
We are starting our first ever Parent and Community Lighthouse Team at Crosswell Elementary. We would love for you to be part of this opportunity because YOU are a valued member of our Crosswell team!

Habit #1: Be Proactive
As we have learned, being proactive means being in charge of ourselves. Proactive language helps us learn how to use positive self-talk and how to use kind words with others. Proactive language is can-do, kind, and affirming. It sounds like "I can do it" or "We can figure this out together." Reactive language blames and sounds like, "You made me." or "I have to." Our words are powerful and the words we speak/think greatly impact how we feel or how we make others feel.
Habit 1 at Home: Proactive Words Jar
Create a proactive words jar to help family members use proactive language throughout the week. This is similar to an affirmations jar!
- Create a proactive words label to cut and paste/tape to your jar or bowl.
- Use premade proactive language cards and add them to your jar/bowl. Be sure to make your own proactive language cards as a family as well! You could do this as you sit at the dinner table together!
- Ways to use the jar throughout the week:
- Pull out one phrase from the jar. Read the statement aloud. Invite family members to describe a situation where that phrase would have helped them be proactive.
- Read a phrase every morning as a reminder of how we can respond proactively, not reactively, throughout the day. What a great conversation in the car on the way to school or while sitting in the car line!

Video 3: The Reading Rope
What exactly are all the components that a student needs in order to be a strong reader? We will discuss each of those components that teachers learned during LETRS training this month. Listen each week as we breakdown each part, what it means, and how you can work with your student to master each one in order to be a fluent reader.
The Power of Reading at Home
See the infographic below about the importance of students reading 20 minutes at home a day.
School and Community Engagement Calendar
Each month, we will post a calendar with events that are happening at Crosswell as well as around the community. These events will be both educational but, also, events for you to spend quality time as a family. Please see the following calendar below to stay up to date!
Cub Tales at CWE!
Crosswell is excited to partner, again, with United Way of Pickens County to provide our Cub Tales' Program! This is a wonderful opportunity for those in the community with children 3 years old and younger. During this time, we follow the Palmetto Basics (see link below) to help families provide enriching opportunities for students through literacy. The Basics are 5 fun, simple, and powerful ways that every parent and caregiver can give every child a great start in life! These basics are simple and for everyone and are based on decades of research! Join us for Cub Tales!
