This was an exciting week in Sustainability! With a new $10,000 Sustainable New Jersey for Schools grant we will be designing an accessible outdoor classroom space for use year round. Children from across the district participate in our ESY program hosted here each summer and High School East’s STAR Academy is giving us input in the design of the space. Our student construction partners funded by the United Way of Ocean and Monmouth County at High School South and North are also working with us in the design and construction of the space and seating. Our STEAM engineering program will be rendering the design in AutoCAD. We are also working with new virtual reality technology called Arkio that may allow our multiply disabled students to tour the space before it comes to life for an even more hands - on participation in the design.
While this was happening outside, Mr. Konopka’s students were learning how to distinguish between renewable and non-renewable resources, and evaluating how to create a sustainable environment. Groups of students were presented with a bag filled with words students had to sort and prioritize. They started with twenty items they could have on their warm dresser island and eventually had to narrow it down to four. The conversations and critical thinking that followed were interesting to see, but everyone eventually settled on the same four.
What four items would you bring?
Pots, pans, clothes, a cow🐄, soil, stove, clean water, a few chickens 🐔, a bed, blankets, saw, solar panels, a microwave, some matches, seeds, toilet paper🧻 and soap.
The low rope course is up in action and the Physical Education classes have begun to start working on it. Next year the low ropes course will be a regular part of the teaching units in Physical Education classes!

Lacrosse Event!
On May 7, 2024 the Girls and Boys Varsity Lacrosse programs from Toms River East and North are playing in a doubleheader showcase @ High School East. In collaboration with the Perrillo Family Foundation, we are using this night as a fundraiser for the Field of Dreams. Our hope is that donations and proceeds from this event will help in eliminating membership costs to over 2,100 special needs families. This will allow families who struggle with their typical day to have a place to experience events, festivals, and leagues without the worry of financial insecurities. The event is free to attend; please check out our links for more information!

Hola familias,

In this last week of Habit 6: Synergize, it is important to reflect on the significance of achieving more together. This habit has taught us to value others’ perspectives, that it is beneficial to the group and is also known as the habit of creative cooperation. When families, schools and communities come together for a greater cause, amazing transformation happens. When we learn from others, respect and value each other’s skills and contributions, we are able to seek out different ideas and perspectives. Like Harry Truman once said, “It is amazing how much you can accomplish when it doesn’t matter who gets the credit.” Let’s value differences and come up with something greater than either one of us had in mind!
Parent idea: Conquer a family project together where all members young and old have a say in the planning.
