Mr. Mauck's Musings
Next week is finals week and the students and staff are gearing up for the final week of the semester. We had some big winners this week. Isabella Harmon was awarded the Lilly Endowment Scholarship for Dubois County. Isabella earned a fully paid tuition at the Indiana college of her choice. She was selected from over 150 students throughout the county. Lylianah Cowan was awarded the Susanna Ave Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student, nominated by a staff member, who exhibits tremendous, determination, grit, positivity and leadership. Congratulations to both young ladies on their hard work. Mr. Land's We The People class competed in their state competition and Unit 1 earned first place while the whole team finished 6th which is our best showing ever. Nice work by our class and Mr. Land. Evan Wilson and Mr. Dan Otto were selected as the JHS Student and Staff of the Week. Joseph Ruiz has been selected as the Optimist Student of the Month. Great job Joseph. The Jobs for Americas Graduates (JAG) collected 98 gifts to be donated to the Mentors for Youth program. Our Educators Rising club is warping Christmas gifts as a fundraiser if you have the need. Head over to Precious Blood Church on Saturday from 9-1 and donate a winter coat to Koatz4Kidz event.
Dr. Nalley celebrated school safety week with a Christmas theme. We watched Twister and had popcorn during homeroom for Severe Weather Day. There was an Earthquake scavenger hunt for candy canes placed in safety areas of the school. Fire Safety day had a homeroom safety quiz competition with breakfast going to the winning homeroom. Finally, Dr. Nalley had gift cards to raffle off during lunch to students who listed their favorite holiday activities or acts of kindness. The kids had fun with the dress up days and the activities. The Sister Cities Program is looking for hosts for an exchange student. Niklas is an 11th grade boy who will turn 17 shortly after his arrival. He lives near Jasper's sister city of Pfaffenweiler. Please contact Mr. Otto (dotto@gjcs.k12.in.us) if you are interested in hosting Niklas from January to May."
Next week will be finals week with altered schedules starting Wednesday. All students are expected to take their finals during the assigned testing days and times. Vocational students will attend school for tests, review sessions and any period for which they would normally be in the building. Those students do not have to attend class during periods where they would not have been in the building. Please communicate your schedules with employers and internships. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid site is now open for Students and Parents to complete their applications for next year. Any student considering attending college should complete the FAFSA to be eligible for financial assistance. I would encourage all families to fill out a application regardless of need as many colleges require FAFSA completion for all types of assistance.
Our community has asked that I share some information with our school stakeholders. Parents Supporting Education is pleased to present a Writing and Coloring Contest Event celebrating MLK Day and Black History Month. The event is focused on encouraging arts and literature throughout the Dubois County community as we celebrate MLK Day and move into the month of February to celebrate Black History Month. There will be two contests for students throughout the Dubois County community in grades K-12th grade to participate in. Please see the attached Media Release for more information. The event flyer, coloring sheet and submission form are attached as well. Crisis Connect and the Jasper Rotary Club have secured Officer Gomez to speak at JHS on Social media at 9:30 am on January 27th. There will be a public performance that evening. Officer Gomez will discuss the dangers of talking with strangers online, issues with sending nude photos (Sextortion), online scams & what to do if you are caught in an online scam and bullying. Crane is offering a STEM Internship to local students. There is more information below. I have also included The Miss Shamrock Pageant information and registration forms. Take some time to help celebrate Ireland's Irish heritage. JHS is very thankful for all of our community partners and the support we receive.
Have a great weekend and Go Cats!

ICE/CTE Students: if your CTE class is meeting during a final you need to attend the CTE class and make arrangements with your JHS teacher for a time to make up the final. As a rule, if you are not at JHS during a normal school day schedule you do not need to attend that period during the finals schedule. If you are at JHS during the normal school day for a period you must attend all classes and review sessions for which you are scheduled. This would not include homerooms or lunch preceding a final where you are not normally scheduled to attend school.

BOOK BANTER FROM YOUR LIBRARY
The last of the new books are out and available on the window table in the library. Included in these selections is Beckett Dodd’s first novel, “The Fight for Five Million”. Beckett is the son of our own Mr. Dodd. Visit the library to check it out -- would be a great read over break!! Teacher favorites and some student favorites are displayed and available for checkout. If you would like to add your favorite to the display, just come to the circulation desk. Miss Lilly welcomed the Little Wildcats to the library on Wednesday, reading “It’s Christmas, David” by David Shannon. Bernadine Dure won the drawing for the design a bookmark event in November. Drawings will resume in January. Finally, thank you to Mr. Otto’s German classes for providing displays of lanterns and posters celebrating St. Martin’s Day.
happy reading!!
