A note from the Principal's Desk: What a Great Start!
Hello Families,
It's hard to believe we have a full month of school under our belt already! It sure has been a warm year so far. I'm looking forward to some slightly cooler temps, but I'm not complaining! I think we're off to a great start!
September brought on a lot of change for our students. Coming back to school after several moths without routines can be a tough change for many. We appreciate all that our families do to make the transition easier for the students. Having a scheduled bedtime and nightly routine can make the school day that much more successful.
Lastly, I wanted to give a shout out to our PTO and staff who helped make our ice cream social such a fun experience. We plan to have Culver's Night on October 29th at the new location near the new Festival Foods. Look for more information as the month progresses. Thank you! Let's make it a wonderful October!

Halloween at Halmstad
October 2024
Greetings Halmstad Families!
Halloween is coming soon. On Thursday, October 31, students and staff can either bring a costume to school OR wear mismatched clothing. Both choices are optional.
COSTUME TIME
Kindergarteners can WEAR their costumes to school.
Students in grades 1-5 will GET DRESSED AT SCHOOL (bring costume in a bag).
We will not have enough adult help to paint faces, color hair, etc. Please save these parts of the costume for home.
COSTUME REQUIREMENTS
If your child is wearing a mask, please make sure they can see.
Leave weapons, knives, toy guns, etc. at home.
If you are questioning if a costume is appropriate for school, selecting a different costume may be best.
CLASS PARTIES
Parties range from 30 minutes to one hour.
Parties may include games and snacks.
Your child’s classroom teacher will contact you with specific instructions if needed.
**If your family doesn’t celebrate Halloween, we will have an alternate activity. Please contact the classroom teacher if you would like your child to participate in a different activity during the Halloween party.
We hope everyone has a happy and safe Halloween! Thank you!
Welcome Our New Staff!
Staff Spotlight: Meet Mrs. Hartung, Our New Title One Teacher
Hello Everyone!
I am Annamarie Hartung, and I am excited to be working with students here at Halmstad. I am a new Title I teacher, and absolutely love reading! I have been a teacher for five years now and am grateful to be able to continue that here with such a welcoming community. Outside of school, my husband and I love to take care of our chickens and kittens. We enjoy travelling, spending time with family, and finding new restaurants to try!
I am excited to get started and watch our students grow! Go Hawks!
Say Hello to Mrs. Schweder, Our New Special Education Assistant
My name is Barb Schweder and I am starting as a Special Ed Support para. This is my first time working directly in a school system. I have a Master Degree in Social Work and have worked mainly in behavioral health settings. I have worked with children and families in day treatment centers, community mental health centers and health clinics providing individual and family counseling.
I live in Cornell with my husband, Daniell (not a typo) and my little brown dog, Tucker. We enjoy biking the Old Abe trail and kayaking in Brunet State Park. I enjoy reading and belong to a book club called The Easy Readers.
I am happy to be at Halmstad supporting the students and look forward to getting to know the staff.

Immunization Reminder
State Law requires that all immunizations be up-to-date within 30 days of entering the school system. New students will be asked to complete the immunization card at registration, all others are requested to notify the school nurse when your child receives additional immunizations. Waivers for personal, religious, or health reasons remain an option for parents.
Immunization Requirements 24/25
From Health Services:
Here are some important guidelines to consider when you hear those words, “I feel sick; I don’t want to go to school today.” These guidelines are the standards of practice that the CFSD nursing services staff follow for the comfort and safety of all of our students and staff.
Keep your student home if any of the following apply:
Temperature over 100.4 degrees in the last 24 hours. If you suspect that they may be sick, please check their temperature with a thermometer before sending them to school. If they have a fever it is not appropriate to send them to school, even if you give them acetaminophen or ibuprofen and their fever breaks. Your child will still be contagious to other children and will also not be feeling well enough to learn. Coming to school sick (and possibly contagious) not only exposes other children to the illness, but also delays your child’s healing time. Once the medicine wears off and the fever returns, your child must be picked up anyway, and valuable healing time has been lost. Children must be fever-free for 24 hours, without the use of medicine, before returning to school.
Vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours - If the vomiting or diarrhea happen more than once that day, or if they are associated with fever, you must keep your child home. Even if these things happen only one time before school starts and your child feels better immediately afterwards, it is still wise to watch for a few hours to see if it happens again before sending them on to class. If your child is spending all of their time at school feeling sick, then not much learning is taking place!
An unexplained rash - Anytime a rash is associated with fever, the child may not come to school until that fever is gone for 24 hours without medication. Sometimes a rash is a sign of a contagious disease such as chickenpox. Sometimes rashes are not contagious, but are uncomfortable and itchy from contact with something the child is allergic to.
It is recommended that your student stays home if the following apply:
Headache, cough, sore throat, or congestion severe enough to interfere with attention to school work.
Flare ups from asthma that would make it difficult to work in school.
DOCTOR NOTES FOR LIMITATIONS/RESTRICTIONS IN SCHOOL:
If your child has an injury or a health issue that requires limitations or restrictions while in school, the district requires a note from the doctor with the restrictions. If the note does not have a date when normal activities can be restarted, a note will also be required to allow the student to again participate in activities.
Treats in the Classroom:
The health office requests that any treats brought in to school for birthdays, parties, or any other special occasions should be store bought with a clear nutrition label. There are certain students and staff with health conditions that may require dietary accommodations and it's important that they are able to review a food's nutrition label before choosing to omit or consume certain foods.
Please also be mindful about choosing treats that may contain tree nuts and/or peanuts for your student's classroom. There may be other students in your child's classroom who may have a severe nut allergy. If you are wondering whether your child is in a nut free classroom, please inquire with your student's classroom teacher or the health office.
