CB South High School
Updates from CB South
EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR THE CLASS OF 2027!
As you know, CB South strives to connect students to the school community in meaningful ways. This year, in keeping with this belief, South is bringing back a club that ran in school from 2011 to 2020. The club is called LINK. For almost ten years, LINK hosted numerous successful leadership training events that involved over 1,000 student leaders in numerous reunion meetings and school activities. The purposes of LINK are twofold: (1) to encourage and train potential leaders, and (2) to foster a caring and inclusive school community.
To accomplish these goals, we are extending an invitation to members of the Class of 2027 to “link in” through participation in a special reflection and community-building day, planned and led by a large group of student leaders called the “LINK Crew.” Once “linked,” students will become part of that growing group of young leaders whose shared mission is to build a positive school culture and community at CB South.
LINK is designed with a “pay it forward” structure, through which different groups of students at a time are trained and empowered as leaders to guide future groups of students through LINK and to serve as positive role models within the school community. As you can see, this model has the potential to positively impact a large number of students, both through direct participation in LINK Crew and as the positive ripples of this growing movement extend outward to the whole school. We believe it will be a valuable part of the culture and community of the Class of 2027. We don’t want to give away too much about this special experience, but I can assure you that a full day of fun has been planned by our LINK Crew, including a variety of leadership-building and reflective activities and some tremendous fun with new friends.
The first two events are Saturday, October 19 and Saturday, November 16, both from 9:00-12:00 in the CB South library. Attached is a permission slip. Please print and circle the date you would like your son or daughter to attend the event, and have your child drop off the permission slip to Mr. Melvin in room C219A. Each date will host the exact same event, so your son or daughter need only attend one! We hope your son or daughter will join us and get “linked-in” to this dynamic group of young leaders.
If you have questions about LINK, please contact Mr. Melvin at wmelvin@cbsd.org for more details.

Teacher Academy Program at CB South!
This upcoming semester CB South will be launching a Teacher Academy Program pilot. The program will be built around an elective class called Principles of Teaching. The program’s main mission is to grow, foster, and empower the next generation of educators in our community, and its foundations are part of the “Grow Your Own” movement, which has been developed as one answer to the teacher shortage in America. The program also hopes to give students career internship experience and to continue connecting our larger CBSD community together.
The Principles of Teaching course will run this spring, and it will have two components:
- Instruction: 2-3 days a week the high school students would meet with their South instructor where they would learn the principles of teaching—from why teachers teach and how they learn about their learners, to the ins and outs of planning, instruction, and classroom management, all the way up to how the profession works as a career.
- Internship: 2-3 days a week the students would be placed in a CBSD teacher's classroom. That teacher would ideally be the grade or content area that the student would eventually like to teach, and they would act as the student’s mentor teacher for the semester. The student would observe, work with small groups of students, and, eventually, lead the class alongside their mentor teacher and do some "real teaching."
The program is an incredibly exciting opportunity for our students at South! It provides them with college-level instruction and a real experiential internship. The program is looking for juniors and seniors who are interested in becoming teachers and who exhibit professionalism, responsibility, organization, passion, and leadership.
Here are some ways to learn more:

NEWS FROM THE STUDENT SERVICES DEPARTMENT
AP Exam Information
AP testing takes place May 5 - 16, 2025 during the school day at CB South. Students enrolled in an AP class at any point during the year will receive a “join code” from their assigned teacher. They will place that "join code" in their student AP CollegeBoard account. AP teachers will assist students in that process.
Once students have completed digital activation (joining) their AP classes, they must pay for the exams in their My Payments Plus account if they wish to take the exam or an exam will not be ordered for them. Payment periods in My Payments Plus will vary based upon when the student started the AP class (1st marking period, 2nd marking period, or 3rd marking period).
Also, starting May 2025, the Collegeboard is changing how exams will be administered. Students will utilize a testing application called Bluebook (this is the same application used for PSAT and SAT).
Fully digital AP subjects for 2025—no paper testing option available:
· AP Comparative Government and Politics
· AP Computer Science A
· AP Computer Science Principles
· AP English Language and Composition
· AP English Literature and Composition
· AP Environmental Science
· AP European History
· AP Psychology
· AP United States History
Hybrid digital AP subjects for 2025—students will view all exam questions in digital format but will answer free-response questions in a paper format:
· AP Biology
· AP Calculus AB
· AP Calculus BC
· AP Chemistry
· AP Macroeconomics
· AP Microeconomics
· AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism
· AP Physics C: Mechanics
· AP Statistics
The following subjects will remain unchanged for 2025:

AP Exam Payment
AP exam payment opened in mypaymentsplus accounts on Monday, September 16, 2024, and runs through Sunday, November 3, 2024 11:59pm.
Payment at this time is ONLY for students who started an AP class 1st marking period and wish to take the AP exam.
A separate payment window will take place in the winter for all AP classes that began 2nd or 3rd marking periods.
Besides making payment for the exam, students must join their AP class in their AP Collegeboard account.
AP exams will not be ordered for students if payment is not made by the deadline in mypaymentsplus.
The cost is $104 per exam. Per Collegeboard, late orders and/or cancellations will incur a $40 fee, however cancellations will allow for a refund of $63.
Any questions regarding payment can be addressed with Mr. Tom Hill - CB South AP Coordinator – thill@cbsd.org
Essay Writing Workshops through the Writing Center (Seniors)
Seniors should ABSOLUTELY take advantage of the College Essay Writing workshops being held in the Writing Center! Whether you haven’t even started, want to completely start over, have a draft, or just finished up and want to get feedback before submitting, this is an opportunity every senior should take advantage of!
College Reps Coming to South (Juniors and Seniors)
College admissions reps began visiting CB South every block on Monday, September 23rd. Visits will continue through mid-November. Most times, these reps are the ones reading the applications for CB South applicants.
Check out the list of who is coming and register in Naviance! Go to Naviance--Colleges--College Visits to register.
Please put a reminder on your phone or in your calendar after registering. You will also receive an email reminder for visits you register for.
*Note: You must register the day before a visit, so please look at the schedule ahead of time. Students must have permission from their teacher to attend college visits and are responsible for work missed during class time. Pay close attention to times- Some visits are virtual and take place at 4pm, so you would login via link at home to take part in the session with the rep.
Senior College Application Process Information
We were incredibly pleased with the number of seniors who attended our College Application Process presentations during Lunch & Learn on September 10 and September 11. Nearly 200 students came to learn more about the process of applying to college and requesting transcripts and recommendations through Naviance. We would also like to thank all of the senior parents who attended our presentation before Back to School Night which highlighted the process and resources to make the process smooth and less stressful for our families.
All resources for the College Application Process can be found on the Student Services Page. All students and their families are asked to carefully review the Application Process Packet and Quick Guide to Requesting Transcripts & Recommendations (to the right side of the page) prior to making any kind of request for records. We recommend students only add colleges to their Common App list that they are definitely applying to. Do not add schools until you are certain they will be applying.
It is absolutely critical that the procedures we have in place are followed line by line to ensure that records are able to be pushed through Naviance. When students do the process out of order, it can lead to technical glitches that will delay our ability to process records requests through Naviance.
PACAC College Fair
October 16th, 2024 @ 6:30 pm
Bucks County Community College (Newtown Campus Gymnasium)
Check out the first Regional College Fair of the season this year. Meet with reps from over 150 colleges and universities!
Due to the number of institutions in attendance, STUDENTS (using their personal email, not parent’s email) should register for the event through StriveScan. This will allow students to quickly register their information for any schools that they are interested in using a personal QR code at each college table.
In order to register, go to https://app.strivescan.com/registration.
PSATs on Saturday October 26th (Sophomores and Juniors)
Registration for the PSATs is now closed. Due to ordering deadlines, we are unable to accept any further registrations. If a student intends to take the SAT or simply wishes to find practice opportunities, there are plenty of free practice tests and resources available online that you can access without needing to take the PSAT: https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/practice is available through College Board (who designs the PSAT) or students can stop by the library to receive an ePrep login.
Students taking the PSAT will be REQUIRED to download BlueBook software to their laptop PRIOR TO TEST DAY to participate in testing. This will be done during Titan Forum in October, but if your student is not in Titan Forum that day, they must see Mr. Chapman in the 1st Floor Student Services Office for instructions.
Sophomores and Juniors who have registered should stay tuned for details about testing day in upcoming newsletters.
Financial Aid for College (Seniors)
Looking for resources to help you through the process of applying for financial aid? Need to learn more about the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid- which is REQUIRED of all financial aid applicants) or GRANT US (PHEAA’S NEW portal for state grants and other financial aid options)? Check out Our Toolkit Helps you Complete the FAFSA | PHEAA to find monthly webinars and other resources to help you through the process!
College Admissions Exams (SAT/ACT) Registration
Many colleges use the SAT or ACT as part of their admissions process. Students should consider taking either the SAT or ACT after they have completed Algebra 2. This will ensure they have covered the Math content that is on these exams. Typically, juniors test in the spring of junior year but every student must determine when they feel most ready.
Registration for the SAT/ACT is directly through the organization’s website (NOT through CBSD/MyPaymentsPlus). Do not wait until the week of the registration deadline (typically the month prior to the test date) to register as the site often crashes or is slow in the days prior to the deadline. To register for these exams, please use these links:
Are You Taking the SATs on Saturday?
This is very important for any student taking the SAT this Saturday. Bluebook, the software used for the SAT, received an update. Before Saturday, please log in to your laptop and open the Bluebook App. This will allow the software to update. Once the update is complete, you will need to relaunch the app to verify the update occurred. You can do this by looking in the upper right-hand corner of the app. The version should contain the date 9/26/24.

The Board prohibits gambling and the possession and use of controlled substances, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and weapons on school premises.
Cross Country
The CB South Cross Country team competed in an SOL dual meet this week against CB West. The CB West girls won the meet, but there were many highlights for the South girls. Leading the way was senior Riley Rooney who ran a blistering 18:33, finishing first overall. Sophomore Taryn Kotsur had a career day setting a personal best of 19:37, beating her previous 5K mark by over 20 seconds.
On the boy’s side, Kenny Konopka ran a season best 16:33 and sophomores Nate Meister and Darren Rafa ran personal best times of 17:00 and 17:04. Their collective performance helped secure the boys first win of the 2024 season. Both teams look forward to the Paul Short Invitational the Friday hosted by Lehigh University.
Next Up: The Titans travel to Lehigh University on Friday, October 4 for the Paul Short Invitational.
Football
CB South Football pushed their overall record to 6-0 this past week with a 12-7 victory over Pennsbury. On a rain-soaked afternoon it was the Titans defense that won the day holding the Falcons to a grand total of 48 yards on the afternoon. Pennsbury gained just 27 yards on the ground and picked only three first downs on the day.
Eddie Bowen led the defensive effort with seven total tackles while Jimmy Wade and Jack Bartolillo tallied six each. Three players tallied tackles for loss while Dan McCusker forced and recovered a fumble.
Offensively, both Owen Pinkerton and Braylen Cape rushed for over 100 yards going for 152 and 112 yards each respectively. Cape punched in one of the two Titans touchdowns for the afternoon, scampering in from 24 yards out to push the CB South advantage to 12-0 early in the third quarter.
Next Up: CB South will host Suburban One League and PIAA District 1 foe North Penn in a class of unbeatens on Friday, October 4. The winner of this game would have a one game advantage in the race for home field advantage as the playoffs loom on the horizon. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. here at Titan Stadium.
Field Hockey
9/26/24
Vs Souderton
Lost 2 to 3 in OT
It was a tough OT loss. The game remained scoreless until the 3rd quarter. Souderton scored first. The Titans answered back with a beautiful lift into the goal during a corner play by Tessa Walls. Erin Kelly assisted on this goal as the inserter. When Souderton scored once again in the 4th quarter, the Titans answered back again getting the equalizer with less than a minute to go in regulation. Ella Haag assisted on Erin Kelly’s goal which sent the team into a 10-minute Overtime period. The 7 v 7 team was battling back and forth but unfortunately Souderton was able to get a shot off with less than 2 minutes to go in the game for the win. There was great offensive play by Kaeli VanDerSluis, Ella Marchesi and Carrie Williams. Freshman Goalkeeper, Nora McQueen made 8 saves in the goal. Defense led by Ella Haag and Kelly Hemsley played great today. Sophia Kraft had a defensive save in today’s game to save a goal from scoring.
10/1/24
Vs CB East
Won 3 to 1
The short road trip across the district did not disappoint for the Titan fans. The first quarter remained scoreless even though South was controlling the game. The team had a few corners but couldn’t convert on them just yet. The 2nd quarter proved to be different. Tessa Walls shot the ball on an odd angle from the end-line to get us on the scoreboard first from a rebound off East’s goalkeeper. Kaeli VanDerSluis was able to get some offensive corners for us today and was able to assist on one of those with a goal by Ella Marchesi. The final goal in the 4th quarter by Ella Haag sealed the win. Ella dribbled the ball from all the way down the field and shot a rocket at the top of the circle into the opposite side of the goal to notch the 3rd goal to defeat the Patriots. Again, Nora McQueen in the goal today made some crucial saves, turning away 7 shots on the goal.
Next Up: CB South is at North Penn on Monday, October 7 at 5:15 & 7:00 pm. Good luck Titans!
Golf
Senior Sophia Branca participated in the Suburban One League Girls Golf Tournament on Tuesday, October 1st at Five Ponds Golf Course. This was her 4th year in a row with the tournament. Girls' Soccer
CB East 2
CB South 1
The Titans fell to the undefeated Patriots in league play on September 27. It was a hard-fought game in the first half with CB South scoring first. The first goal was scored by Olivia Daniele. East scored the equalizer 10 minutes later. The game winner was scored by East in the second half of the match.
“The girls fought hard to compete against a very good opponent. We had some opportunities to tie the game but unfortunately the ball didn't bounce our way,” said Coach Lordi. There are four division games that remain on the schedule before the playoffs.
Next Up: CB South returns to action on Tuesday, October 8 when the Titans host the Knights of North Penn in a Division bout on Senior Night for CB South. Matches are slated for 5:30 p.m. (JV) and 7 p.m. (Varsity).
Boys' Soccer
The CB South Boys' Varsity Soccer Team had a light but important week. In their only game in the past week the boys travelled to Central Bucks East for an early Saturday morning game. The team was led by Anthony Bice up front and Ryan Weiner in goal to give the Titans the 1-0 victory in overtime. The defense was super tight, giving us an opportunity for victory. Of course we still needed to score, and it was Anthony Bice, running on a Jackson Tait through ball that gave South the dramatic victory.
Off the field, our team had a successful fundraising effort with their car wash on Sunday. It was a great team bonding experience, and special thanks go out to everyone who came to support the team.
Next week is a big week with our guys travelling to North Penn on Tuesday Oct 8th in what promises to be an exciting match with North Penn trying to pack their stands, followed by a visit by a hungry CB West team on Friday. Come out and support our soccer team as we head into the final 4 games of our regular season.
Next Up: The Titans travel to North Penn on Tuesday, October 8 for tilt against the Knights. Opening tap is set for 3:30 p.m.
Girls' Volleyball
The CB South Titans Volleyball Team battle through sickness and injuries but fell short in this week’s matches. A strong sense of team and commitment to one another was evident as girls stepped in to help. Please come out and support your Titans on Monday, as they look to get back up off the mat and celebrate our seniors. Pola Sawicka, Jackie Finlaw and Madison Zagnojny have been invaluable to our program, and we have an incredible night planned. We also have a home match Thursday against a tough North Penn squad at 6:30 PM.
Next Up: CB South hosts Wissahickon on Monday, October 7 at 5:30 & 6:30 p.m. on Senior Night for the Titans.

Next Up: CB South will wait to see who it takes on in the first round of the PIAA District 1 Tournament.
Wrestling

Over 30 wrestlers, coach & family members ran the 5K race building fellowship and showing support for our community. Great job everyone from the HS, MS and CB South Jr Titan youth program. “Wrestlers get tough by doing tough things."
Good Sportsmanship
We hope that everyone will continue to support our events during the fall season. South prides itself on good sportsmanship on the part of players and fans alike. Please keep the following in mind as you cheer for our teams this season:
The use of profanity and vulgarity is unacceptable at athletic events. Please do not engage in inappropriate or demeaning chants during games. Students who do not comply with this expectation will be ejected from the games and will face disciplinary consequences. Let’s focus on supporting our participating students, not degrading others.
Entering/Rushing the athletes’ area of play is prohibited and dangerous to security, teachers, spectators, and the athletes.
Students are not permitted to bring purses, draw string bags, backpacks, food, or beverages to any athletic event in the fall season.
Students are prohibited from trespassing on the property of any school in the Central Bucks School District or on any property in any other school district. Damaging school property or engaging in any other activity that inconveniences the other school’s staff is strictly prohibited and will be considered vandalism, resulting in disciplinary and legal consequences. Please do not jeopardize your good standing by engaging in this type of unacceptable behavior.
All Central Bucks School District and Central Bucks High School South’s polices apply to students at athletic events. Please be advised that coming to an athletic event under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance is not only extremely dangerous, but also violates School Board Policy 227. If a student chooses to attend a CB South athletic event while under the influence, law enforcement will be notified and a suspension will be imposed.
The Board has the authority to prohibit at a school district event the attendance of any individual whose conduct may constitute a disruption. The Board prohibits gambling and the possession and use of controlled substances, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, fireworks, flammable liquids, incendiary devices (ie. no tailgating permitted), and weapons on school premises. https://go.boarddocs.com/pa/cbuc/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=D2PSX370646C
CB South’s Administration respectfully requests that parents monitor their child’s whereabouts and actions before athletic events at CB South. Please be aware of your child’s plans before the event, how they will safely get to the event, and how they will safely arrive home from the event.
We hope that you continue to show your enthusiasm and school spirit as we enter the fall season. The Faculty and Administration at CB South has always considered your ability to support our teams in a positive and respectful manner as one of our key points of pride. Please join your classmates in continuing this proud tradition.
