No School Day Reminders
Oct. 11 — Professional Development Day
Breakfast
Any students that would like breakfast will need to enter through the Kids West door, which is the single door in the cafeteria. Any students that would like breakfast may enter through the single door starting at 8:35 a.m.
Class Snacks & Birthday Treats from Nutrition Department
Based on feedback, our district has reviewed previous guidance related to snacks at the elementary level. Snacks and birthday treats will be allowed during the school day. Staff will prioritize students’ safety when determining where and how snacks will be consumed. For example, staff may consider eating snacks outside, in a different space than the classroom such as the cafeteria if it is available, or with a limited number of students eating at one time inside the classroom. Grade level teams will share their plan for consuming snacks with their building administrators.
For more information and a approved snack list please consult our Nutrition Services website.
PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF REMINDERS
The safety of our students is always our highest priority. We ask for your cooperation during pick-ups and drop-offs. Vehicles should never be left unattended while in the drive-through areas. If you need to go in and pick up your child, please park in the parking lot. For both adults and children: Please don't cross 73rd Street anywhere other than the crosswalk.
South Side Door/Parking Lot: All kindergarten and first grade students, older siblings of
kindergarten and first grade students, and daycare
All parents picking up their child in the south parking lot must stay in the car line (alongside the sidewalk and curb.) Please do not leave your vehicles unattended.
The entire curbside/sidewalk lane will be utilized, so please continue to move forward in your car as the car line moves forward. No cars should be parked and left unattended in either lane (inner lane or curbside lane.)
Students leaving the building at this location will be asked to stand along the west sidewalk next to the grass. Teachers will be located in this area.
Students will be dismissed to the vehicle when your child recognizes the vehicle. Teachers will provide assistance in this process. Children should enter each vehicle and exit from the curbside and NOT in the traffic lane.
If parents choose to park and walk to the school to meet your child, parking will be allowed at the south end of the parking lot. Parents and children should use the sidewalk for safety purposes.
The inner lane of the parking lot will only serve as a means to exit or park. Children will not be allowed to enter or exit any vehicle stopped or parked in this lane.
West Circle Drive Pick-Up Dismissal Guidelines: All second through sixth grade students
Please do not leave cars unattended along the curb lane or the outside lane.
As cars pick up their child in front of you, please move forward.
Once you have picked up your child, please move to the outside moving lane.
Students should be reminded to stay on the sidewalk and NOT cross the parking lot in between parked/running cars.
Students should enter and exit the car on the curbside of the car.
Teachers on duty will guide preschool students into their car from the curb lane.
At the main entrance, please obey the stop sign and the teacher on duty as students use the crosswalk.
There is no left turn onto 73rd Street out of the parking lot.
Walking To/From School
Families and students who walk to/from school should use the crosswalk at the front of the building. This includes families that park on side streets and pick up students at any door location.
For both adults and children: Please don't cross 73rd Street anywhere other than the crosswalk.
We appreciate your support in keeping our students safe!
WDMCS Student Launches Sexual Assault Comfort Care Drive for Adults, Children
Hunter Essmann is a Valley High School senior. He’s a member of the Tigers’ varsity football and baseball teams, and participates in Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), National Council on Youth Leadership (NCYL), and Silver Cord.
Essmann is also part of Boy Scout Troop 242, and from Sept. 1-24, he’s asking for your assistance.
To showcase the development of leadership skills and impact the community through his Eagle Scout Service Project, Essmann has teamed up with UnityPoint Health - Des Moines to provide comfort care kits for sexual assault victims. These kits, created for both adults and children when they arrive to emergency departments at local hospitals, include personal care products like shampoos and soaps, toothbrushes and toothpastes, and deodorants and lotions, among other essentials.
PTO NEWS
Welcome, CLA Families!
The Clive Learning Academy Parent Teacher Organization would like to warmly welcome all families to the start of a new school year. We are excited to see what this year will bring and invite you to be an active member of our organization.
The CLA PTO is open to anyone who has a student in the school. There are no dues or fees. To learn more about the PTO, visit www.clivepto.org. Once on the site, sign up to receive our blog posts via email. This is one of the best ways to stay informed of volunteer opportunities, meeting dates, and more. Another great way to find information is to "Like" us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/clivelearningacademy.
Booster Pak Volunteer Needed
The PTO is seeking a volunteer to assist with the delivery of Booster Paks. What is a Booster Pak? It is a sack of food delivered to at-risk students on weekends and school breaks, when they do not have access to the federal free or reduced-price meal programs. The Booster Pak organization is run by the Food Bank of Iowa.
Our school needs an adult driver with a van, SUV or pickup truck to participate in school deliveries. The driver would come to the West Des Moines Community Schools Operations Center (2102 Delavan Drive, West Des Moines), pick up boxes of packs and take them to the school. These deliveries take place on Thursdays at 11 a.m., but there are some Mondays. Time commitment is approximately one hour each week.
If you are interested, email clivepto@gmail.com for more information. This is a very important volunteer position. Please consider helping out — we need you!
