The Blue Hour by Paula Hawkins
The estate of the late artist, Vanessa, is in turmoil. She left her artwork to Fairburn House and her home and property on a remote island, Eris, off of the Scottish mainland to longtime friend, Grace. James Becker is the art expert with Fairburn House and has been tasked with curating the collection and making certain all of Vanessa's paintings and ceramics are given to the collection. He also has access to her diaries and other writings. One of her multimedia pieces has been loaned to a famous art museum in London and they have expressed concerns about a bone that appears in the work. They suspect it is human, not animal. Becker is sent to Eris Island to talk with Grace in the hopes there is documentation on the bone. Becker has communicated with Grace, but needs to meet with her in person to look over papers and talk about other artwork that needs to be sent to Fairburn House. And here the story gets murky. What happened to some of the artwork that is missing? Is it, in fact, a human bone in the artwork? If so, whose bone is it? The remote island was used as a burial ground for centuries to keep wolves from digging up bodies. Perhaps it is an ancient remnant? Grace is a strange creature; how did she and Vanessa become so close? What is she hiding? I have read other books by this author. This was not my favorite. I had little patience for the drama depicted in the artist's diaries and in the narrative from Grace. The artist and many of the other characters were spoiled, bored people. I thought the story was too long and the ending wasn't satisfying.
