National Hispanic Heritage Month is annually celebrated from September 15 to October 15 in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. Here are a few Hispanic Americans and their contributions to areas like science, government, art, literature and sports.

Sylvia Mendez

She is a Mexican and Puerto Rican American nurse and activist who played a role in desegregating schools. Mendez is considered a pioneer because she was one of the first Latinos to attend an all-white school in California.

José Ferrer

Ferrer was a Puerto Rican actor and film director. His talent helped him to become the first Puerto Rican actor to win the Best Actor Academy Award for the 1950 film version of Cyrano de Bergerac. His iconic portrayal of the lovelorn poet/swordsman had already won him the Tony in 1947.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Her charisma and social presence helped her gain the ability to be an activist in her community. In January of 2019, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez was sworn-in as the youngest woman and youngest Latina ever to serve in Congress.

Lauro Cavazos

He is known as a trailblazer because he was the first Mexican American to serve in the U.S. Cabinet. He was also the president of Texas Tech University. He served the Secretary of Education under Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush from 1988-1990.

School Hours:

Doors open at 7:30am.

Classes start at 7:45 am and dismisses at 3:15pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Students are dismissed at 2:00pm every Wednesday for early release.

Students must be in their classroom by 7:45am to avoid being tardy. If you are late, you need to sign in at the office and get a pass before going to class.

This Thursday, students will be participating in FOCUS at the PAC. FOCUS stands for FOCUS – Focus on driving, Others are affected, Clear distractions, Understand that substances impair judgment, Safely reach your destination. About seven teens aged 13–19 die every day from motor vehicle crash injuries. Per mile driven, teen drivers aged 16–19 are nearly three times as likely as drivers aged 20 or older to be in a fatal crash. The good news is that teen motor vehicle crashes are preventable. We know proven strategies can improve the safety of young drivers on the road.

You will meet in the Commons by 7:40am. You will return in time for lunch. Please take a moment to read over the following theater expectations:

*FRIDAY, October 18th:

➔ Senior athletes visit elementary students for autographs.

➔ A pep rally will be held after lunch in the PAC. The pep rally will consist of sports team

presentations, band, dance team, and cheerleader performances, all classes will

perform their ditty and lip sync, and the homecoming court will be announced along

with the King and Queen. Parents are welcome to watch ONLY if they have notified

the HS office before 3:25 pm on 10/16.

➔ The parade will leave the school parking lot at 2:15 pm and return to school shortly

before 3:15 pm. Spectators can watch the parade on North Webster Ave, Larabee

Street (by HB Patch), and Main Street (between Scott Park and the bridge).

➔ Varsity Football vs Campbellsport - 7:00 pm

*SATURDAY, October 19th:

➔ Homecoming dance in the high school commons at 8:00 - 11:00 pm, grand march at

10:00 pm. No entry after 9:30 pm. Admission is $10.00 for the dance the week of, and

$12.00 at the door.

Take a night off of cooking and join us at a Red Robin on October 28, 2024 to support the AP World History Trip to Germany! The fundraiser is all day and be sure to mention Omro!

The prestigious honor of “Student of the Month” is selected from the senior class for each month September through May. Seniors are selected for their academic successes, leadership abilities, citizenship, and extra-curricular activities.

Mondays during Fox Time, during an enrichment session called "Stump Mr. Hugo" students may ask Mr. Hugo a science question, to see if he knows the answer.

The winner on October 7 was Jaxson, with the question, "What is the study of octupi called?" The prize is a sign that the winner may wear the next day which reads, "I STUMPED MR. HUGO". There were 13 other questions that were submitted!

Calling all poets! Help celebrate our veterans by creating an original poem for Veterans Day.

The top poem or poems will be shared at our Veterans Day Assembly, Monday, November 11, 2024.

What is the S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) group up to?

In the spirit of the Olympic games, SADD members are competing in the "S.A.D.D. Olympics" by going out and having some fun! Students are flying kites, coloring with a young person, conducting a Random act of Kindness, or possibly even tossing a frisbee with friends.

Students have one month to complete as many fun activities as possible to earn a bronze, sliver, or gold medal. See Mrs. Miller if you are a SADD member who is

interested in joining in on the competition.

Students interested in bringing a guest to the Homecoming dance who is not a current Omro High School student must complete a dance guest permission form. Forms are found in the HS office. Please read the form carefully to make sure you have all the necessary signatures and information complete. Forms are due back to the HS office by Wednesday, October 16th.

• You may NOT go out into the hall way. You are either in the PAC or the cafeteria.
• Inappropriate language and behaviors are not allowed and will result in you being removed for the next day. This includes tackling, rough, aggressive play, throwing balls at others, kicking balls across the gym and using profanity.
• You may NOT bring open food into the gym.
• EVERYONE needs to help clean up when the bell rings. It is not ok to just kick the balls to the corner of the gym for someone else to clean up.
• Remember, it is a PRIVILEGE to have the gym open during that time and if you wish to see it continue to be open, you need to be following all behavior expectations.

Fox Friday forms and the box to put them in are located in the MS/HS Media Center. Please take a moment to nominate students and staff you think deserve to be recognized for being safe, responsible, respectful and positive! You can also nominate staff you feel have made a positive connection, is a great role model or who stands up for students. Please fill out a form so we can celebrate our students and staff this week!!!

REMINDER: EXTRACURRICULAR ATTENDANCE POLICY - PRACTICE & COMPETITION

***Students must be in attendance for the entire school day in order to practice or compete in an event. ***

Special circumstances may merit exception with prior approval from the Principal/Dean of Students, or designee. To see if the absence can be approved:

• Step 1 - Parent/Guardian notification to office (Mrs. Prado, Mrs. Stadler or Mrs. Dobberstein) at least 24 hours prior to absence)
• Step 2 - If absence is approved, Student picks up signed Excused Slip from office
• Step 3 - Student gives signed Excused Slip to coach/advisor to participate the day of the absence

If an absence is deemed unexcused it will result in ineligibility for participation in extracurricular activities until the next full day of attendance.

Payment is made directly to the department through the application, using a credit or debit card or by ACH direct withdrawal. Once the permit application process is complete, the Department mails a paper copy of the permit directly to the employer.

A free career exploration event, October 11, Northern Michigan University is hosting an event for high school girls at Boldt to learn about construction. Various skilled trades partners will be there to provide hands-on- activities along with other companies for architecture and design. Thursday, October 17, from 1-3 pm at Theda Clark, you are invited to take part in a special opportunity to get a first hand look at the new Da Vinci 5 surgical robot. Our specially trained surgeons will be on hand to answer questions and share about the capabilities and benefits of robotic surgery. Attention Juniors and Seniors! Are you interested in touring UW Oshkosh? We will be taking a group of students to the UWO campus on Thursday, October 24th, but spaces are limited on a first come first serve basis. Cost to students is $10 to cover your lunch while on campus. If you are interested, stop in the guidance office to pick up a permission slip. Signed permission slips, with payment, are due back to the guidance office by Thursday, October 10th.

The Winnebago County Land & Water Conservation Department invites K5 through 12th grade students in Winnebago County to participate in the 2024-2025 Conservation Awareness Poster Contest. The annual competition encourages students to showcase their creativity and express their thoughts on conservation practices.

The theme for the 2024-2025 school year is "Home is where the Habitat is."

The contest is open to all Winnebago County public, private, and home-schooled students in K5-12th grade. Submissions will be evaluated in five different grade divisions: K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. The top three posters in each category will receive prizes. Each of the the 1st place county winners will advance to the area competition, with a chance for their poster to win further prizes at the state and national level!

Posters and entry forms are due by 5:00pm on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 to the Winnebago County Land & Water Conservation Department.

Poster Contest Guidelines

• Poster size must be 12" x 18" OR 14" x 22"
• The 2025 National Contest Theme, "Home is where the Habitat is," must be written on each poster.
• All posters shall be created by an individual student, rather than a team of students.
• Any media may be used: paint, crayon, colored pencil, charcoal, stickers, paper or other materials on regular posters. Computer-generated posters will not be accepted.
• To be eligible for judging, each entry must have a completed and signed entry form attached to the back.
