Everything in life got its purpose. Find its reason in every season. ~Bob Marley
Message from Superintendent Cunningham
Dear Icahn Families,
As we navigated through the month of February, Icahn Schools had exciting events and opportunities planned for our students.
During the month of February (February 24th, 2025) we celebrated the 100th day of school. Students and staff celebrated this fun and exciting milestone by engaging in creative activities.
Family-Teacher Conferences:
Family-Teacher Conferences are always a great opportunity for parents to meet with teachers to discuss their child's progress. Ongoing communication is always a much needed recipe for any healthy relationship. Please continue to keep in touch with your child's teacher.
Thank you for attending our conferences. Your presence in your child's education will always lead to success.
Black History Month:
Throughout the month of February, our staff and students celebrated the rich history and contributions of African Americans. Many of our classrooms explored significant events, figures, and cultural achievements. The purpose behind this was to help our students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for diversity.
As always, I encourage you to stay involved and informed in your child's education. I thank you for choosing Icahn Schools and for your continued support in making our schools a success for our students. Please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher(s) or administration team with any questions, concerns, or compliments regarding their daily efforts.
Sincerely,
Lawford Cunningham,
Superintendent

Did You Know?
Carter G. Woodson, often referred to as the " Father of Black History," is credited with starting Black History Month. In 1926, Carter G. Woodson designated a week in February to celebrate black history. Carter G Woodson chose the month of February because it included the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Mr. Woodson worked as both a teacher and school principal prior to obtaining a bachelor's degree in literature from Berea College in Kentucky.
The 2nd Annual Bronx Invitational Chess Tournament
Our incredible chess champions participated in the Bronx Invitational Chess Tournament on February 11, 2025, at Yankee Stadium! Chess scholars from all Icahn Schools brought their Icahn pride in a dazzling display of sportsmanship. Icahn students delivered an outstanding performance in three rounds of chess during the city-wide tournament. With every precise move and bold strategy, these trailblazers redefined excellence on the board, sparking a legacy of ambition and innovation that inspires us to think, play, and win beyond the game.

K-2nd Grade Teachers
In this session, teachers focused on reducing barriers to learning in upcoming Wit & Wisdom lessons, ensuring all students have access and pathways to achieve the lesson goal(s). They began by establishing a shared understanding of principles for supporting all learners, including differentiation, scaffolding, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Teachers explored embedded supports within the Wit & Wisdom curriculum and generated strategies to proactively plan to meet their students' needs while maintaining the curriculum's integrity.
3rd - 6th Grade Teachers and Middle School ELA Teachers
In this session, teachers gained a clear understanding of the structure and purpose of multiple choice and writing ELAAP lessons, explored the ELAAP calendar and its phases, and enhanced their ability to prepare for strategic coaching during these lessons.
Middle School Science Teachers
Facilitated by Edith Schneider from Teaching Matters, middle school science teachers analyzed the demands of the 8th grade NYS science exam. The new Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) questions narrowly focus on content but always include the other dimensions - a Cross Cutting Concept, as well as one of the Science and Engineering Practice. Teachers engaged in activities to develop questions that will prepare our students for the NYS science exam.
Middle School Social Studies
Teachers dug into unit assessment data focusing on the many ways to pull reports and analyze results while also exploring the potential to prepare students for computer-based testing.
Physical Education
PE teachers continued their ongoing focus in unpacking physical education standards to ensure lesson plans are aligned to the expectations for students on different grade levels.
