Connect to Kindergarten at Marysville! Wednesday, March 13th 3:45-5:00 PM
We look forward to meeting you!
Dear Marysville school community,
PPS is working to make our buildings more climate friendly by lowering emissions and increasing health and comfort. To figure out how to prioritize this work, we need your help!
We're asking families, students, and teachers from the Franklin and Cleveland clusters to join us for public listening/input sessions on the district's decarbonization planning. We want to find out what and how we should prioritize this work to help give students and teachers the best possible experience they can have each day in PPS schools. Everyone from the community is invited to join for these 60 minute meetings.
March 18, 5:30-6:30 PM -- Franklin High School, Room M-223, for all schools in the Franklin and Cleveland clusters (all are welcome)
You can also attend the Lincoln High School meeting on March 19, 5:30-6:30 PM @ Lincoln HS (Rm. 148 in the Library) if that date works better for you.
Please RSVP here.
If you have any questions, please email decarbonization@pps.net. If you cannot attend in person, you can also submit feedback through this online form.
At PPS, 90% of our greenhouse gas emissions come from our buildings! This is an amazing opportunity for the district to be part of a green future and to make our buildings more sustainable and comfortable for our community.
We appreciate you participating.
Thanks so much,
The PPS decarb team
Portland Public Schools Budget
Because state funding for education has not risen to meet the increase in district expenses the district must cut roughly $30 million from next year’s budget.
District operating costs have risen significantly without a comparable increase in
revenue. One-time pandemic relief funds also end this year.
- District enrollment continues to decline, resulting in a further loss of money per student from state and federal funding. At the same time inflation has significantly increased our operating costs – goods, wages, and services. Our students’ needs have grown, too, bringing new expenses.
The first phase begins in February with modifications to school staffing that fit
both our financial circumstances and our smaller student body.
This timeline is driven by:
- regional hiring trends
- a need to provide ample time to reassign staff members as needed
- a need to provide principals ample time to plan for the next school year
There will likely be adjustments before the Superintendent’s proposed budget in April, or
between the proposed budget and the Board’s formal approval in May.
- NOTE: At this point, people are not laid off. They are being unassigned while the whole district adjusts to population and program shifts, and to natural attrition that also occurs every year.
During the second phase, we will adjust central resources to support the work in
our schools.
- This begins roughly in March, once school staffing has largely settled.
- Our goal is to determine the highest-priority central functions in our lean budget times.
These decisions – first at the school level, then at the central level – reflect our
commitment to maximize student achievement within our financial limitations.
