What is P-TECH?
The Pathways in Technology Early College (P-TECH) program at Hightower allows high school students to earn up to 60 college credits as they complete a degree and earn industry certifications in Health Information Technology, Histological Technician or Medical Assisting through Houston Community College.
Histological Technician A.A.S.
Histotechnologists view specimens under a microscope; findings are used in medical research and patient care to diagnose and treat diseases. Histotech’s prepare thin slices of tissue--human, animal, or plant--to be analyzed by a pathologist. Preparations include working with dyes and chemicals to make any abnormalities visible under examination.

Medical Assisting A.A.S.
A health professional trained to function in ambulatory care, outpatient clinics, and physicians’ offices. The training and education involve administrative front office skills (the business end of the medical practice) and clinical patient care skills. Students will earn two levels of certification in the program, and can begin working in the field during junior year.

Health Information Technology A.A.S.
A registered health information technician performs a variety of health information-related functions, including organization, analysis, coding and technical evaluation of health information and interaction with administrative and financial departments of health-care facilities. Students will earn two certifications during the program and can begin working in the field their junior year.
P-TECH High School Pathways and Endorsements
The P-TECH Early College program at Hightower provides two (almost three!) pathways for students, from which they will select one.
Pathway A
- Endorsement: Public Service or STEM if the math and science requirements are met.
- CTE Program: Health Informatics
- Program: Health Information Technology (HIT)
- Degree Plan: A.A.S. Health Information Technology
- Certificate(s): Health Information Technology – Analysis (Level I) and Health Information Technology – Coding (Level II)
- Endorsements: Public Service or STEM if the math and science requirements are met.
- CTE Program: Biomedical Science
- Program: Histologic Technician (HISTO)
- Degree Plan: A.A.S. Histologic Technician
- Certificate(s): Histotechnologist
