Haunted History & Spooky Science Night!
Wednesday, October 30, 2024: Activities from 5 to 7 pm
Students and families are invited to participate in our Spooky Science Experiments and Scary History Stories. OVMS Students, families, and siblings are invited to attend our event to participate in fun activities. Music, Candy and Prizes will be available! Come see how learning is fun!
Costume Contest at Lunch on Thursday, October 31, 2024
Students and staff are invited to participate in our October 31st lunch time Costume Contest. Parents are invited to judge the event. Please reach out to our Parent Representative Ms. Tinoco at 818-833-3909 to let us know you will be here. Parents wanting to judge should arrive by 11:45 am to our Attendance office and can expect to done by 12:30 pm when lunch is over.
Students participating in the contest must follow Olive Vista Guidelines which include:
- All costumes MUST be school appropriate
- Weapons, replica weapons, and anything that could be used as a weapon can not be on campus
- Face paint is allowed, masks are not
- Costumes must not be a distraction to the school day
Lets make this a fun day!
Book Fair in the Library
The book fair provides opportunities for families to purchase books to read and keep at home. Begin a family library, or add to books you already have! Books, posters, and other fun items available for purchase.
Open before school, during lunch, and after school. Teachers may bring classes during class time.

Students are encouraged to bring a picture for the altar and drop off to Ms. Robledo in SSO.
If you would like to get the picture back, make sure to put full name and advisory teacher on the back

Student-led Conferences
Many thanks to our OVMS families for coming to our student-led conferences. We have over 440 students bring their family members to share their learning so far this school year. We look forward to our conferences scheduled for the Spring where we will be able to have students show their growth into the second semester.

Candy Bar and Bracelet Reward for Attendance
Students were given full size candy bars for the 50th day and recieved a paper wristband for free dress day on Monday. Students need to have both bracelets, the plastic one given out on Wednesday and the paper bracelet.
50th Day of School - October 23, 2024
Students should not be absent more than 7 days for the entire school year. Every 25 days we celebrate to bring awareness to the importance of being in school and avoiding having chronic absenteeism. Check this chart to see if you child is at the 96% goal of if they are in danger of having chronic absenteeism.

Red Ribbon Friday to raise awareness of the dangers of drug use
OVMS encouraged students and staff to wear red on Friday 10/25, as a symbol to bring attention to the dangers of illegal drug use. Red Ribbon Day is a nationally recognized day and we want to remind students and families of the importance of having conversations around making safe decisions.
8th Grade Updates
Zone of Choice
ALL 8th graders must Complete a Zone of Choice application by November 15th.
Students completed the application on paper and MUST return application with parent signature OR students can have parents complete the Zone of Choice via the Parent Portal.
8th graders wanting to apply for a Magnet school MUST DO BOTH APPLICATIONS.

After school program information
Reminders
Food delivery to school is NOT permitted
Drop off in the morning
All parents are asked to DROP OFF students in the morning at the Borden gate, near our auditorium. Students should be dropped off no later than 8:15 am to ensure students make it to class on time.
Pick up after school
Dismissal Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday is at 3:16 pm
Dismissal Tuesday is at 2:15 pm
Two gates are open for dismissal. Please plan ahead with your child which gate you would like them to exit. We will open Tyler Street gate at the front of the school or Borden St gate next to the auditorium.
Please follow traffic laws - Drop students off on the school side sidewalk or use the crosswalk!
Cones will be set up along Borden street for drop off in the morning. Please ask your child to use the crosswalk if crossing the street, for everyone's safety drop your child off on the school side of the street.
Pick up after school should be within 20 minutes
If your child needs to remain at school longer than 20 minutes waiting for pick up, please sign your child up for the after school program!

Attendance Matters
Per LAUSD policy, students are expected to be in school 96% of the the school year and should not miss more than seven (7) days of school for the ENTIRE year. Please be sure that your child arrives to school by 8:10 to ensure they have time to make it to school on time. Our first class of the day will begin at 8:25 am and dismissal will be at 3:16 pm.
This year we have added a few additional shortened days for students starting with Friday, September 13th when students will be dismissed at 2:15 pm. A schedule with all important dates will be home in the first day of school packet in the white envelope given to students on Monday the 12th.
