A Guide for Managing Meltdowns
Learning how your child’s brain works can help with many different parenting strategies as you navigate their development. In a child’s brain, there is the “upstairs” part of the brain which controls logical thinking and the “downstairs” brain where strong emotions come from.
When a child loses emotional control, their brain switches to downstairs mode (also known as meltdown mode). When a child is in this mode, a parent's first instinct might be to say something like “Go to your room and think about what you did!” However, when a child reaches their boiling point, they are not able to have rational thought or self-reflection.
Instead, a parent can guide them through co-regulation and coping strategies such as breathing techniques, exercise, or sensory activities like listening to music. Check out this guide from Big Life Journal that shows effective ways to teach your child co-regulation and what to do in a heated meltdown moment.
Grade 1/2 Celebrates the Special Women in their Lives
Faith News
A message from Father Ambrose to mothers.
Motherhood is a high calling. May the Lord continue to
nourish and sustain you all in this special and noble vocation
of motherhood, co-creators with God, carriers, and nurturers
of life. May you be filled with the abundance of grace,
good health, happiness, peace, joy and love as mothers. And
may the Mother of God and Mother Par Excellence, the
Queen and patroness of motherhood, perpetually intercede
for you all. Amen.
Happy Mother’s Day!
