Leadership Update
Jewel Brumley, Executive Director of Learning and Leadership
We are pleased to announce that Jewel Brumley, with 41 years of experience in education, is taking on a new leadership role as the Executive Director of Learning and Leadership in our Teaching and Learning department.
Mrs. Brumley began her career in education as a teacher at the Yakama Tribal School. She joined YSD in August 2005 and has made significant contributions in various roles, including teacher, teacher on special assignment (TOSA), assistant principal, principal, and now executive director.
Jewel's dedication to advocating for black, Indigenous people of color (BIPOC) students stems from her heritage as an Alaskan Native and the daughter of a Tsimshian boarding school survivor. Her deep connection to the community and her passion for education shines through in every role she’s undertaken.
In addition to her love for education, Jewel has a great interest in insects, believing they are the backbone of the ecosystem. She is particularly fascinated by Yellowjackets, wasps, and hornets and is proud of her work on the lure and kill system for the Asian Giant Hornet, affectionately known as the "murder hornet." Jewel had the unique experience of feeding, playing with, and ultimately dissecting Asian Giant Hornets from a nest captured here in Washington State. Her passion for these species stems from their omnivorous nature, much like humans. One of her favorite non-fiction books is "First in Fly."
Outside of her professional life, Jewel recently celebrated her 43rd anniversary with her husband Neil. Their children, who grew up in Yakima, now live in Seattle and Spokane. Jewel also enjoys exploring Native history, culture, and art, alongside reading and golf.
