Ruby Falls and the larger Lookout Mountain Caverns complex have been designated a National Historic Landmark. It is often associated with the nearby Rock City attraction, which lies atop Lookout Mountain.
History
As for the history of Ruby Falls and the cave, it was said to be accidentally discovered by Leo Lambert upon looking for an alternate entrance to the Lookout Mountain.In 1928, Leo Lambert and a team of excavators found a breathtaking waterfall located over 1,120 feet below the surface of Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, TN. Lambert named the falls after his wife, Ruby, and opened the area as a public attraction in 1930. Today, Ruby Falls welcomes thousands of visitors each year. The original natural entrance of Lookout Mountain Cave was sealed off due to construction of a railway.
