February is a month focused on Kindness. Kindness is an act of being friendly, generous, respectful, and considerate of everyone we come in contact with. Everyone can participate in kindness everyday, every moment.
A Tofield Titan is expected to be kind to everyone in the school. We encourage everyone to make being kind a goal each and every day. February 28, 2023 is Pink Shirt Day - on this day students are asked to wear pink to support anti-bullying awareness.
Semester Two is up and running! Jr/Sr High report cards were sent home on Friday, February 2nd. Real Time Reporting
A letter was emailed home last week explaining our switch to real time reporting. Here is some further information. If you need any help getting into PowerSchool to access attendance or achievement information, please let us know!
Which Grade is the Real Grade?
Confused by what grade is the real grade when you get a notification that an assessment has been entered? For semestered courses, make sure to follow the S1 grade. For year long courses, look at the Y1 grade. These grades are cumulative, so it is the whole semester or whole year combined. The Q2 or T2 grades are only what has been assessed in that period of time. We know it’s confusing! Unfortunately, families aren’t able to see all of the calculations that go into a grade (categories, weightings, etc.), so if you have a question, reach out to your teachers!
Work Ex/RAP Update
Students not continuing their placement for Semester 2 must get a final evaluation done to get their credits and hours from Semester 1. Timesheets must also be handed in - no time sheets, no eval, no credits!
For students who are planning or are considering Work Experience or RAP:
If students did work experience in Semester 1:
1. They need to check with their supervisor if they can continue with that placement.
2. They also need to check if the times that they are available are different and communicate that to their supervisor.
If students did not do work experience in Semester 1:
1. They need to find a placement for their work experience. It is best if the student/family finds this placement as it is usually a better fit and is more likely to be something that the student is interested in.
2. If they can not find a placement, they need to speak to Mr. Chanasyk ASAP to discuss placements.
3. Paperwork needs to be completed ASAP so that they are can get hours and credits. There are many consent forms and learning plans that need to be completed and an inspection of the worksite may also need to be completed before the student can collect hours. No hours, no credits!

Food Studies
Over the last few years, the Food Studies program has been growing at Tofield School. With Foods courses available for Grades 7 through 12, there is a huge opportunity for students to learn valuable cooking-related skills.
In senior foods (grades 10-12), students focus on four main skill areas: nutrition, preparation, safety and sanitation, and employability. With courses ranging from Contemporary Baking to Bread Products to Food Preservation, the program has a lot to offer for all students. In each one-credit module, students cook a minimum of five recipes and are exposed to the culinary theory that underlies each topic. There is also emphasis placed on safe cooking practices, teamwork, presentation, and creativity.
In Food Studies 10, students learn the basics of cooking, with a focus on: nutrition, making simple, inexpensive recipes, and food safety. Among the highlights this year for the Food Studies 10 students were making pizza and perogies from scratch, exploring Canadian Heritage Foods, and baking “Choose Your Own Adventure” chocolate chip cookies.
In Food Studies 20/30, we build on the basics, while continuing to develop employable skills like working as a team, understanding recipes, and working under time limits. The favourite recipes for Foods 20/30 this year included baking bread, pickling carrots, and making and exploring a variety of soups and sauces. Next year we will be changing the focus to explore more international cuisine and will learn skills related to creating and decorating cakes and pastries.
January Scrapbook
Grade 7 & 9 Art Field Trip
Students got to visit the Art Gallery of Alberta to examine different types of art!
Family Literacy Day
Our students enjoyed celebrating Family Literacy Day on January 27 with time to read their favourite books. Family Literacy Day is celebrated to raise awareness about the importance of reading. Did you know, reading for fun is linked to better future academic results, mental health, and empathy skills? So, pick up a good book and get reading!
Eye Presentation with Dr. Marc Kallal
Tofield School would like to thank Dr. Marc Kallal (Tofield Eyecare) for his presentation about how the eye works and some fun facts about the eye to grade 8 students on February 7, 2024.
Student Questions:
Did you know that spinach is healthy for your eyes?
They are rich in vitamins C and E which are good for your eye.
Did you know why pirates wear a patch on one eye?
It is said that pirates would change their patch to the other eye when entering dark areas or at night. The eye that had been covered could see better at night because of resting in the dark all day.
Is the eye made of convex and concave lenses?
Convex lenses fine-tune the focus so an image forms on the retina at the back of the eye.
