Hispanic Heritage Street Fair and Festival
Thank you to everyone who came out and supported our first Hispanic Heritage Street Fair and Festival. We had some amazing performances from JD Smith Middle School Los Bravos and Las Bravas Mariachi, Las Vegas Academy Mariachi International, and Tom Williams Elementary School Folklorico. Our families had a great time eating some wonderful food provided by the Corn Guys, the Taco Truck and Puffy Ices. Our Gilbert Staff and families were enjoying the opportunity to spend time together as we made piñatas, floral headbands, and colored Day of the Dead ornaments. We had our talented Ms. Jackson and Ms. Childress painting faces.

Students and families had an enjoyable morning creating beautiful art on the blacktop. We definitely have a talented community. The event created an opportunity for our students to build relationships with staff, families, and each other. Thank you for coming out to support our Giraffe Culture.
APEX Fun Run
A-Money and Piggy from APEX spent the last two weeks having a great with our students as they talked to them about positive character traits. The staff at Gilbert Academy appreciate everyone for coming out and supporting our students during the APEX Fun Run. The students had a great time running to raise money for our school. We are still waiting for the numbers of how many laps our students ran and how much money was raised. Hopefully, we will know soon. Some of the money raised will be used to provide teachers with necessary supplies for their classrooms and student incentives. Thank you to everyone that donated to our school.

Our Busy Classrooms
Kindergarten
In Kindergarten, we are practicing using the tools we have to self regulate our bodies, voices and emotions. These skills will help us be successful learners in school and in life.
In reading, we are learning about community helpers and how we can be a positive change in our community too. We are also learning how to write sentences using the resources in the classroom, our letter sound knowledge and sight words. We are learning how to write equations for addition and subtraction and continue skip counting by tens and fives. In science, we learned about the needs of plants and animals and their habitats.
First Grade
Phonics: We are learning beginning and ending blends.
Reading; Our reading module essential question asks: Why is it important to do my best and get along with others? The students will read stories about playing soccer, a dinosaur who wants to blend in and how to be kind to others.
Math: The students are learning strategies to help them learn how to add and subtract fluently within 20.
Writing: We are starting to write a step by step guide to making friends at school.
Science: The students have been learning about plants and animal defenses.
Second Grade
Hello to our families. This month we will be diving into our HMH stories Recipe for a Fairy Tale, Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs, How to Read a Story, Rabbit’s Snow Dance, A Crow, a Lion, and a Mouse, Hollywood Chicken, and Two Cinderella Stories. Utilizing these wondrous stories, we will be learning Story Structure, Sequence of Steps, and asking and answering questions to make sure we’re understanding details. In phonics, we will be focusing on those unpredictable vowel teams that can give us so much trouble like the different sounds for “ow”, “ea”, and “oo”. In writing, we’re letting our imagination soar by learning how to write an imaginative story. In math, we’ll really be diving into word problems to ensure our students are understanding the concepts of addition, subtraction, and when to utilize them. We’ll be really changing things up in science when we learn the Phases of Matter. Would you like to help at home? Please be reading with your student every evening. That really does increase both vocabulary and fluency, and it’s just so fun. Another fun option would be to quiz your students on their math facts. Thank you all for your involvement. Hope your month is as fun as ours is going to be.
Third Grade
Fourth Grade
We are so proud of our grade 4 scholars. They have been multiplying 2-digit by 2-digit. Our 4th graders use their dramatic skills by reading a mini-play from our reading series. They concluded the science energy unit by building a mini wind turbine. We think you are proud of them too!!
Fifth Grade
Hi 5th Grade Families! Things have been really busy in our neck of the woods. 5th Graders have been learning about the Earth, patterns and the sky. This includes learning about all the cool things in our galaxy. We are spending our social studies time learning about the formation of the colonies, trade routes, and the influence African American and Native American persons had on the colonies. We are reading and writing about natural disasters and how we can better protect ourselves during those events. Our math is all about multiplication. We have advanced well beyond just simple multiplication fact practice (however we still need to keep practicing those facts at home nightly) to multiplying 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers. Any extra practice you can do with them at home would be greatly appreciated. Add to that all of our matinee practices we have during the week. We will be sending home a Classdojo message about clothing sizes so we can begin to costume the kids. Any questions or concerns, please send a Classdojo to your child’s teacher.
Academic Data
Helping your child succeed at school involves a combination of support, encouragement, and practical strategies. Here are some effective ways to assist them:
Establish a Routine: Create a consistent daily schedule for homework, study time, and bedtime. Routines help children know what to expect and foster good habits.
Create a Dedicated Study Space: Designate a quiet, well-lit area for homework and studying, free from distractions. This can help your child focus better.
Stay Involved: Attend parent-teacher conferences, school events, and stay informed about your child's progress. Open communication with teachers can provide insights and support.
Encourage Reading: Foster a love for reading by providing access to books that interest your child. Reading improves vocabulary, comprehension, and overall academic performance.
Set Goals Together: Help your child set achievable academic goals and celebrate their progress. This can motivate them and give them a sense of accomplishment.
Teach Organizational Skills: Encourage your child to use planners or digital tools to keep track of assignments and deadlines. Organization can reduce stress and enhance productivity.
Promote a Growth Mindset: Encourage resilience by emphasizing that mistakes are part of learning. Praise effort rather than just results to build confidence.
Limit Screen Time: Set boundaries on recreational screen time to ensure it doesn’t interfere with homework and sleep.
Encourage Extracurricular Activities: Support your child in exploring interests outside of academics, such as sports, music, or clubs, to enhance their social skills and self-esteem.
Be a Positive Role Model: Show enthusiasm for learning and demonstrate good habits in your own life. Your attitude towards education can greatly influence your child.
Communicate Openly: Create an environment where your child feels comfortable discussing challenges and successes. Listening to their concerns can help you provide appropriate support.
Healthy Lifestyle: Ensure your child eats well, exercises, and gets enough sleep. A healthy lifestyle contributes significantly to focus and overall well-being.
By actively supporting your child in these ways, you can help them navigate school successfully and build a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

Help Us Keep Gilbert Safe
As we continue to foster a positive and productive learning environment at school, I want to emphasize the importance of discussing appropriate behavior with your child.
Engaging in open conversations about school behavior not only helps children understand the expectations set by teachers and staff, but it also encourages them to develop essential social skills. Here are a few key points to consider when talking with your child:
Understanding Expectations: Discuss the school’s rules and values. When children know what is expected of them, they are more likely to meet those expectations.
Respect and Empathy: Teach your child the importance of treating others with kindness and respect. Encouraging empathy helps create a supportive school community.
Conflict Resolution: Talk about how to handle disagreements in a constructive way. Teaching problem-solving skills can empower your child to navigate challenges with confidence.
Responsibility and Accountability: Encourage your child to take responsibility for their actions. Understanding the consequences of their behavior is crucial for personal growth.
Positive Communication: Foster an environment where your child feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings. Open communication helps children articulate their experiences and seek guidance when needed.
By discussing these topics, you are helping your child build a strong foundation for their social and emotional development. Together, we can ensure a safe and respectful school environment where every student can thrive.
Thank you for your support and partnership in this important aspect of your child’s education.
Attendance Matters
Gilbert Current Chronic Absence Rate
The Numbers Say Every Day Matters!
Good school attendance is crucial for several reasons:
Academic Success: Regular attendance helps students keep up with lessons, understand concepts better, and achieve higher grades. Missing classes can lead to gaps in knowledge that are hard to fill later.
Skill Development: Being present in school allows students to develop important skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and social interaction, which are often fostered through discussions and group work.
Discipline and Responsibility: Consistent attendance instills a sense of responsibility and discipline, qualities that are valuable in both academic and professional settings.
Social Connections: Regular attendance helps students build and maintain friendships, which are important for emotional support and social development.
Engagement and Participation: Students who attend school regularly are more likely to participate in extracurricular activities and school events, fostering a sense of belonging and community.
Long-term Outcomes: Good attendance is linked to better long-term outcomes, including higher education attainment, better job prospects, and overall life satisfaction.
Encouraging good attendance can create a positive cycle of engagement, learning, and success for students.
