Get Into Your Sanctuary Photo Contest
Show the world what the ocean and Great Lakes mean to you.
Deadline: September 2, 2024
In celebration of national Get Into Your Sanctuary activities, NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries holds a photo contest annually in the following categories:
- Sanctuary Views: Share your photos of beautiful sunsets or scenic shots of your favorite national marine sanctuary.
- Sanctuary Life: Send us your best photos of sanctuary inhabitants like fish, birds, marine mammals, and other amazing ocean creatures.
- Sanctuary Recreation: Enter your best images of people responsibly enjoying national marine sanctuaries, whether they're boating, kayaking, diving, swimming, or just hanging out on the beach.
- Sanctuaries at Home: Show us how you're connecting to your National Marine Sanctuary System from home! Submissions to this category must follow the guidance of Sanctuary Recreation, Sanctuary Life, and Sanctuary Views but can also include photos of stewardship activities from your home or neighborhood, or sanctuary-related artwork (paintings, drawings, etc.).
- Sanctuaries Around the World: Ocean connection can happen anywhere, not just in the National Marine Sanctuary System. Following the guidance of Sanctuary Recreation, Sanctuary Life, and Sanctuary Views, show us where you connect to the ocean by submitting your photos, from anywhere in the world, to the "Sanctuaries Around the World" category of our photo contest. Submissions to this category can include photos taken in the United States, but outside of a national marine sanctuary, as well as photos taken outside of the United States. We recommend that these images consist of photos taken in the wild of marine life or bodies of water close to you. Submissions of photos from zoos, aquariums, or other indoor establishments are not encouraged.

Young Writers ages 13-19.5
How do fireflies light up? How do sonar waves travel underwater? How does artificial intelligence actually work? These are the types of questions posed to a science writer, whose work it is to explain complex scientific concepts to a general audience. “At the same time, writers must spin tales that hook and keep readers, despite the endless other demands on their attention,” reads an excerpt from The Craft of Science Writing. This month, dear writer, write an article that explains a scientific concept or idea you’ve been curious about in an engaging and creative way.

Connecting Scientists Through Classrooms
September 17, Fish Faces with Kory Evans
Kory is an evolutionary biologist and one of the easiest people to listen to talk about skull evolution I've ever met. His career has taken him all over the world to study fish, and the CT scans he creates of these fish faces are gorgeous. You won't want to miss this one!
We'll be talking with the folks from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute about their free educational game Fathomverse.
October 22nd, Frogs with Daniela Pereja Mejía
Daniela is a Biologist/Herpetologist from Quito, Ecuador. Graduated in Biology from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, Daniela obtained her Master's degree at the Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz (UESC) in Brazil, where she worked on the Movement Ecology of treefrogs in Brazil and proposed a new method for monitoring arboreal frogs. She is currently in her final year of her PhD at UESC, with part of her work at Stanford University in the United States. Her doctoral project focuses on the behavior and spatial ecology of arboreal frogs in the Ecuadorian Amazon. She has been working with amphibians and reptiles for more than 10 years not only in research but also in Conservation projects.
November 15th, food on the moon with Jess Atkin
Jess Atkin is figuring out how to use plants and microbes to clean and prepare moon dust (called Lunar regolith) so we can safely grow crops on the moon someday!
December 5th, The Art of Microscopes with Steph Nowotarski
Steph is a biologist and artist who uses subatomic particles to reveal the tiniest parts of life as an electron microscopist.
