Seventh Grade Newsletter
September 14, 2014
Dear Parents,
What a great first full week of school! We had a successful lockdown drill on Thursday. While we hope never to have a real lockdown, it is important for the students to practice in the unlikely event that we do. We were very pleased with the calm, mature way the students conducted themselves.
English
This week we worked on informational writing. Students have completed six pages in their notebooks. On Friday, students wrote an introduction paragraph. This is called a formative assessment, or practice. You can see the scores in Powerschool. Remember that a 4 is "above and beyond" the requirements and a 1 is the lowest score. Students are encouraged to try again and improve their scores. We will continue to learn about the different parts of an informational essay this week. You can visit my website to see the schedule for the week, along with pictures of each notebook page. There is a link below, and also a link from the staff directory on the school district website.

Math
Students this week focused on the 6th grade review packet. We are about half way through the review. We will continue to go over questions from 6th grade during the "warm-up" portion of our class period. Next week, students will begin the first math Unit of the year: The Number System. They will be learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers. Each day, students will be taking notes in class. They should bring their notebooks home with them to help out with practice problems.
Advanced Math
Students this week will take a formative assessment on Monday over rotations. Initially, we had planned to take this on September 12th. However, we needed a bit more time to work on rotations. So, on Monday we will check to see how we are doing with this concept. Afterwards, we will be focusing on reflections.
Day of Caring
Mr. Block's homeroom cleaned Michigan Beach. They collected 55 pounds of garbage!
Adopt-a-Beach
Mrs. Garver's homeroom cleaned Depot Beach. These boys are tallying the different types of garbage they collected.
Kickball!
Mr. Schultz's homeroom helped clients from the Bergmann Center. Students acted as "buddies" to help clients by helping them kick the ball, run the bases, or just to keep them company in the dugout.
iPad Distribution
We are still working to make sure students have their Apple ID and password. As of Friday afternoon, only 23 students could log-in correctly. If you are experiencing difficulties with this process, please contact Mrs. Garver. We hope to distribute iPads to students on Thursday.
Rafting Trip
Our middle school rafting trip will be Friday, September 19. Your child should have brought home a permission slip and waiver. The trip will cost $20 per student. Scholarships are available. The trip includes rafting, bumper boats, a ropes course and miniature golf. A hot dog lunch and transportation is also included in the price.
Please contact Mr. Garrett at 547-8203 if you have any questions.
Thank you!
As always, please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.
Sincerely,
