THIRD GRADE TEAM
We continue introducing you to all of our amazing staff members! This week, we are showcasing our Third Grade teachers Ryan Brown, Theresa Stogsdill, Michelle Shumake, Randi McCray, Helen Leigh, Laurie Brennan and Rachel Varga.
Dear Families,
Next week, our school community will focus on the Other People Mindset of Being present and giving others my attention. This means when we are with other people, we are present and give them our full attention.
In today's world, it's easy to get distracted by phone calls, messages, and social media. These distractions can pull us away from what's most important — our relationships with other people.
Just as plants need sunlight to grow, our relationships need attention. If we don’t give our full attention when we are with our family, friends, and even colleagues, we can't build strong relationships. It’s crucial to put down our phones and tablets and really listen when others are talking. Positive relationships are the foundation of a positive culture, and we can’t build positive relationships without attention.
To practice and encourage the Other People Mindset of being present and giving others our attention, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families. There, you will watch a video clip together and discuss a quote and three questions.
Thank you for your support!
START WITH HELLO
Hello everyone!
Westwood Elementary School is participating in Sandy Hook Promise’s National Start with Hello week from September 23rd-27th.The Start with Hello program consists of a week of fun activities that raises awareness and educates students about how to reach out and include those who may be socially isolated. The purpose of this program is to create a culture of connectedness within our school community.
Start with Hello week will consist of five themed days, with a kickoff on Monday, September 23rd.
Monday’s (September 23rd) Theme – “MEET-N-GREET MONDAY”: Meet someone new, using your own personalized “Hello Style” (e.g. hey, what’s up?). Invite someone to play a game or to eat with you during lunch.
Tuesday’s (September 24th) Theme – “TEAMWORK TUESDAY: Show your team spirit by wearing your favorite team colors or gear to school. Make a new friend by playing bingo during lunch!
Wednesday (September 25th) Theme – “WEAR GREEN WEDNESDAY”: Wear green as a symbol of unity and solidarity to indicate your intention to be a part of a Start with Hello community.
Thursday (September 26th) Theme – “THANK YOU THURSDAY”: Show appreciation to fellow Roadrunners who reach-out and help others, invite classmates to join in activities, and show excellent teamwork.

RECESS ROUNDUP
To ensure our students are set up for success on the playground, we will b teaching playground games during PE. Each week, the entire school will focus on one specific game.
PLAY STRUCTURE
As a reminder, we are asking teachers to explicitly teach each of the playground games following the schoolwide schedule.
There will be a little video on RRTV that shows students how to play safely on the play structure.
There is only walking, no running or chase games.
No throwing, digging, or making piles with the wood chips.
One at a time on the slide. Sliders must sit on their bottoms and go down feet first.
Slides are for going down only. No climbing up them.
Monkey bars- start at the ladder, one at a time, swing by your hands towards the play structure.
No climbing over the top of the bars.
If you are waiting to swing on the swings, stand back along the black top in front of one person swinging, and count to 30. Use your fingers to show the person you are counting.
Problems:
Anyone not following the rules may be stopped from playing that recess or for a longer period of time
SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL BALLOT
What is the School Site Council?
The SSC is made up of five staff members and five parent/community members, each serving a two-year term. We currently have two openings for parent/community representatives for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years. Members are expected to attend all meetings, with our first Zoom meeting scheduled for October.
Voting is open until Wednesday, September 25, 2024.
DISMISSAL HELP
Westwood has over 840 students, and we need your help to ensure a smooth and safe dismissal. We are requesting that all parents, family, friends and caregivers to wait behind the yellow line on the pavement for your student. This will reduce crowding around the teacher dismissal area and improve safety for all. Thank you!
