Carleton Washburne
Monday Memo - October 24, 2022
Washburne Families,
We hope everyone enjoyed the sunshine and warm weather this weekend. Please CLICK HERE to read the safety and security updates we shared last week. Our staff will be working with students this week as we help them manage these changes.
As a reminder, if you are considering other high schools besides New Trier, there is a common Winnetka Teacher feedback form that parents need to sign and return the first page to Jen Pistorius (jenpistorius@winnetka36.org) in the Washburne Office to begin this process.
You can then send the Common Teacher Feedback Form, Linked Here, to each teacher.
Students are welcome to dress up for Halloween on Monday, October 31st.
Students who choose to dress up need to adhere to the following guidelines:
- Students may not wear a mask that is part of a costume. A health and safety mask is okay.
- All costumes should reflect good taste and common sense. Nothing deemed inappropriate by our regular dress code will be acceptable.
- Weapons of any nature are not acceptable. This includes toy guns, knives, sticks, swords, etc.
- Students will be in their costumes for the entire day, so it should be comfortable for them to wear.
Thank you as always for your collaboration and partnership.
Take Care and Be Well,
Andrew Fenton & Ben Horwitz
Washburne Principal & Assistant Principal
Window to Washburne
Welcome to Window to Washburne! Each week, we will be highlighting some of the learning taking place in our classrooms.
We are fortunate to have access to some incredible resources within the Winnetka community, and our staff do an outstanding job of creating partnerships to bring these resources to our students. One such partnership has been our Resource Center Director, Katie Nelson, and the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library. Once a month, Maddy Belk, Youth Services Librarian with the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library visits Washburne during lunch periods to promote Anime and Manga activities for interested students. This past week, students were able to discuss their favorite anime characters while creating magnets like the ones pictured below.
Kudos to Ms. Nelson and Ms. Belk for creating such a wonderful partnership for our students.

The Washburne String Orchestra, (7th/8th grade) has had a great start to the school year. Rehearsals are going well as we continue preparations on the music for our December concert.
On October 5th, several Orchestra members submitted video auditions for the ILMEA Honors Orchestra. I'm proud to announce that four Washburne students were selected!
They will have the unique opportunity to perform with the ILMEA District 7 Honors Orchestra on November 5th at Grayslake Central High School in Grayslake, Illinois.
Congratulations to all who auditioned and all who were selected!!!
On Thursday, October 27th, our 8th grade orchestra students will be traveling to New Trier's east campus to join forces with the Township middle schools for the annual 8th grade Township Orchestra festival. During the day, there is a rehearsal with a pizza lunch followed by the evening performance! Please join us in Gaffney Auditorium at 7pm for what promises to be a wonderful concert.
Tickets are not required! Hope to see everyone there!
Band
7th and 8th Grade Symphonic Band is off to a very strong start this year. We are currently working on "Prelude and Toccata" and "Kyiv, 2022" for our upcoming concert and plan to play a seasonal selection alongside the 6th Grade Concert Band. Our first concert will be on December 8th at 7:30 PM in the Washburne Gymnasium.
8th grade members of the Symphonic Band recently performed alongside the New Trier High School Wind Ensemble and other 8th grade students from the surrounding New Trier Township schools at the New Trier 8th Grade Festival. We are excited that these students had the opportunity to work with Mr. Temple and Mr. Meyer, who will be their Band directors next year.
On Monday, October 17th, the Washburne Jazz Ensemble attended a field trip to New Trier High School to engage in a shared rehearsal with Mr. Meyer and the New Trier Jazz Ensemble 1. WJE students played alongside and participated in a performance clinic with upperclassmen from New Trier.
Finally, several Symphonic Band members submitted video auditions for the ILMEA Honors Band and Jazz Band and we are proud to announce that two Washburne students were placed into ensembles! The ILMEA Honors Junior Band performance will take place on November 5th at Grayslake Central High School and the ILMEA Honors Junior Jazz Band performance will take place on November 19th at Woodstock High School. Congratulations to all students who participated in this audition process.
