The Friday Forecast

In acknowledgment of the improving public health condition related to COVID-19, effective March 12, 2022, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) will no longer require the use of masks indoors at schools, child care sites, and other school district facilities, but will be strongly recommended. WVUSD has worked collaboratively with LACDPH to follow and execute all public health orders throughout the pandemic without adding additional restrictions. The optional use of masks indoors at all WVUSD schools and facilities is consistent with the District’s approach to COVID-19 restrictions and requirements during the pandemic.

Mask Updates:

• Regardless of vaccination status, masking indoors and outdoors is not required (LACDPH). Mask use is an individual and family decision.
• No student or staff member should be pressured based on their decision to wear or not wear a mask.
• While masking will still be required while on public transit, school buses are not public and are therefore not public transit. Masking on a school bus is optional.
• Events and training outside of WVUSD may require students and staff to wear masks. Please become familiar with the requirements before attending an off-site training, field trip, or sporting event.
• All COVID-19 protocols related to testing positive will remain in place. Protocols can be found on our COVID-19 link on the District’s front webpage.

On March 13, 2022, the time will change very early in the morning, 2:00 am, to be exact. This is a friendly reminder to everybody, so don’t forget to change the times on your clock.

On March 13, 2020, our schools shut down due to the Coronavirus. For two years, our students and staff showed resilience and adjusted through different ways of teaching and learning.

The Walnut High Community Club would like to celebrate each of our students and staff as we have reached this milestone and recognize how far we’ve come...together.

On Wednesday, March 16, the Walnut High Community Club will be handing out free popsicles to all students by the front office and F gate leading to the student lot. Come by at dismissal for a cool treat!!

March is an endless month with no breaks so we hope this will brighten up your day!

We had a practice test run for our JUNIORS this week. Thank you to our testing team for all the hard work and for making our test run successful.

Next week we begin 11th-grade state testing in English Language Arts. Juniors who take the CAASPP will receive a CAASPP EAP score. Those scores, combined with their senior year classes or grade point average, may help identify two key California State University (CSU) first-year classes.

Helpful Information on Discussing the Mask Update With Your Child(ren)

Health experts such as Dr. Linda Nicolotti, Head of Pediatric Psychology and Behavioral Health at Brenner Children’s Hospital, acknowledge that while some students may feel relieved about lifting the mask mandates in school, others may not.

Here are some ways Dr. Nicolotti suggest parents talk to their children about mask changes in school:

• Inform your child about the change
• Ask your child how they feel about the changes
• Discuss why your child may want to continue masking
• Discuss why your child may not want to continue masking
• Emphasize the importance of respecting the opinion of others

As always, COVID-19 restrictions and mandates are subject to change. LACDPH can require masks to be worn on district property should there be a change in COVID-19 transmission levels. We anticipate additional State guidance on COVID-19 requirements in the next few weeks.

Join us on April 1 in the PAC to celebrate the life of Ken McDill starting at 3:30 pm. After the service, the Walnut High Community Club will provide drinks and refreshments in the MPR.

In memory of Ken, ASB is going to be honoring his legacy and would love for staff and student body to be included. Feel free to write heartfelt thank-yous, memories, etc, and ASB will ensure that your message is included.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made through checks written to Walnut High School (Attn: Ken McDill Memorial Fund) which will go directly to different clubs, teams, and programs that Ken invested in over the years.

Your Walnut High School Dance Team was crowned National Champs last weekend in Florida!

🏆 National Champs in Large Kick, Large Prop, and Medium Open. They were also awarded best choreography for kick & prop, best category in kick, & best category in prop!

👏 Our dance team earned their 24th overall national title in program history!

Way to represent Walnut High School on a national stage. So proud!

Congratulations to Seniors Sarah Chang and Kaitlin Chheng. They were selected for the ALL-STATE Honor Choir and participated in the concerts in Fresno on February 19.

On March 5, our WHS Science Olympiad Team A placed 1st in the Division C MiniSO category for Southern California Regionals! This was the online-only category for high school teams in SoCal. They beat out 6 other teams in this category.

The complete Walnut High School Team A roster for the Science Olympiad Southern California Regional Tournament Division C MiniSO Category consisted of: Anisha Choksey, Audrey Lin, Chandrark Muddana, Connor Chang, Daisie Leng, George Pong, Joann Sum, Kelly Wang, Renee Chang, Renee Wen, Ryan Fue, Sunny Liu, Surya Donath, Tsz Chun He, and Zimo Chen, with Harris Song and Phillip Tang serving as alternates.

On March 17, we'll all be celebrating St. Patrick's Day, so come out and buy some cupcakes!!!!!!!!

The Walnut High School Girls Volleyball Program will be hosting their 1st Annual Golf Tournament on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at Los Serranos Golf Club. This event raises vital funds to support our girl's volleyball program. These funds will be used to purchase much-needed equipment, tournament fees, transportation, meals, and supportive coaching staff to help them succeed on the court.

Our goal is to always provide a safe, instructive environment for all of our athletes to learn and develop skills to be better volleyball players, but more importantly, productive members of society and fielding a competitive program.

To continue to make this experience a reality for our program, we are reaching out directly to area businesses, family, and friends and offering the opportunity to help by becoming a sponsor.

Included in this letter is a brochure with a variety of sponsorship packages for you to review and details about the tournament. All donations to our volleyball program are tax-deductible. Are you interested in joining Peer Counseling? WHS Peer Counseling is now accepting applications! Applications can be found on the link below and are due on March 15th.

Peer Support is offered by our WHS Peer Counselors, who have been trained to listen. They are fellow students who will not tell you how you should feel. They are willing to listen and go through issues with you.

Our WHS Peer Counselors have training in talking with students without judging. They understand that confidentiality is the most crucial part of what they do. Peer Counselors will keep what you say private unless there is a risk of suicide, self-injury, child abuse, or a danger that you will hurt someone else.

Peer Counseling is not a club and represents a diverse group of WHS students. Most Peer Counselors do not know each other when the year begins. This group of students only supports their fellow students during difficult times. Fill out the application for a chance to help others.

Starting today at 4:00 pm, students will be receiving an email from their GLC via Sign Up Genius with a link to select their summer registration appointment. Parents, please coordinate with your student your preferred date and time! Preferably, sibling appointments should be selected on the same day. Sibling appointments will not be made for you.

Registration appointments will be held from June 27th-July 22nd.

IMPORTANT: Student schedules will be created in May based on their course request selections. There is no benefit or drawback to selecting the first summer or last appointments; please set the appointment time that best fits your schedule. Summer appointments are to review schedules, check for scheduling mistakes, and to ensure that your student is taking the most appropriate courses for their grade level and post-secondary plans. Teacher change requests will not be honored.

The virtual event will provide students and parents with information about our fantastic Summer program opportunities. Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation is pleased to announce that its scholarship program, Tzu Chi Scholars 2022, is now accepting applications. All the high school graduating seniors are encouraged to apply. Tzu Chi Scholars are selected on the basis of financial need, academic achievement, and community involvement. This is a nationwide program and each scholar will be awarded a total of $1,500. Please note that the deadline for the Scholarship is March 31, 2022. Applicants should mail the completed application form and supporting documents to the regional Tzu Chi office that is assigned to serve the state of applicant’s residency.

Use the Walnut High School COVID 19 Reporting Form to report all Covid positive cases and known exposures. This will help facilitate the contact tracing process. Someone from the school health team will contact the person who submitted the form within 48 hours of the form submission.

Visit our website at www.walnuths.net and click on the button labeled REPORT A COVID-19 Case in the top left-hand corner. Parents can upload vaccine records, positive tests, and report details related to positive cases and possible exposure.

The information will go directly to the attendance office and our school nurse.

We are offering FREE After School tutoring on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays after school from 3:00 - 4:30 pm in the library starting next week. Tutors will be available in all content areas to help our students with homework, study for tests, or anything they need!

Our GLCs held a College Application and Financial Aid Information Night over YouTube Live. Below the video contains the Frequently Asked Questions during Financial Aid Night 2021.

This short video provides a variety of College and Career Readiness Resources for this years Seniors.

Students must attend every class, every day, and be on time. In order to receive daily credit, students are to bring all necessary materials to class. Students will not be excused from class to get materials. Homework and class assignments are to be completed on time and to the best of the student’s ability. Only behaviors befitting the learning environment are acceptable. Students are to comply with all reasonable requests of any staff member. Dress code will be enforced.

Attendance is an essential part of each student's educational plan at Walnut High School. A parent/guardian must contact the attendance office for full-day absences by the end of the day. This procedure helps us fulfill required attendance monitoring obligations and helps ensure our students' safety.

Any student who arrives 30 mins late to school must check in to the attendance office either with a parent/ guardian or a phone call from their parent/guardian.

If a parent/guardian wishes to dismiss a student before the end of a typical school day, the parent/guardian will have to check out the student and must present their ID to the attendance office.

Due to safety concerns, we DO NOT accept student lunches in the office. We understand the importance of student nutrition, but we encourage students to either purchase lunch at school or bring their lunch from home. Food, drinks, or other items are NOT to be passed to students through the fence. This is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

Please Note: Parents can now access the Food Services Department from our website under the Parents tab. On that page, parents can set up and deposit funds into their student's lunch account for purchasing lunch on campus.
