PLUACLD Investigating the School Leaders' Role In
Creating and Maintaining A Positive School Culture and Climate
ALSDE, in partnership with Cognia, developed the Alabama Teacher Observation Tool which features five dimensions of teacher effectiveness: culture/climate, learning, essentials, agency, and relationships. The purpose of this professional learning unit is to study two of these dimensions more deeply, culture/climate and relationships, to determine how they align to student achievement in schools.
Pre-assessment (1 hour) Gather multiple sources of data (district/school professional learning plan; school continuous improvement plan; strategic plan, etc.) to determine professional learning offered focused on culture and climate. Participants will assess and evaluate professional learning for alignment to building a positive culture and climate. Participants will assess their current professional learning offerings using the standards and will design and develop a plan for supporting their faculty in promoting a positive culture and climate. Administrators will synthesize the content learned in the prior sessions relating to culture and climate. They will review their data analysis in the area of culture and climate; identify areas of focus, and design and develop a professional learning plan for supporting teachers in fostering a positive culture and climate.

Sharing the Legends-Oka Kapassa School Day Event for 4th and 5th Grades
Sharing the Legends, the Oka Kapassa School-day event, invites schools (public/private) in a 5-county area to attend, specifically grades 4/5 based on the Alabama Social Studies Course of Study. Oka Kapassa, through the Sharing the Legends school day event, serves to communicate Alabama's cultural heritage and history regarding Native Americans who once inhabited the state and region. Most of the participants are part of Southeastern tribes who once lived in Alabama. The arts, culture, and history presented reflect Alabama's living cultural heritage and history. Teachers and students experience authentic Native American culture through artistic/cultural demonstrations, performances, food, and various participatory activities.
Native participants understand the cultural and educational mission of this event and design opportunities to engage students and teachers in the exploration of the culture and arts presented. The participants are knowledgeable regarding not only the cultural diversity of the Native People, but also the diversity within and among the tribes. Many aspects of intertribal diversity are apparent through their stories, dances, music, and regalia. They are eager to share their knowledge and heritage with all those who attend the festival events.
The Oka Kapassa school events are presented in a format students and teachers enjoy and often participate in. Dancers ask participants to dance in the arena with them or the storytellers present stories that engage the audience in participation of the story. Demonstrators often have components of their presentation that allow for hands-on experiences with their craft or skill. For example, school day attendees can engage in Choctaw basketry skills, tribal dance and music, or the tomahawk throw. All the experiences provide the audience opportunities to engage in Native American culture through artistic/cultural demonstrations, performances, food, and various participatory activities. The setting of the events also engages teachers and students in discussion and questions with the presenters.
This festival program is attended by about 1,000 students and teachers and accompanying adults. Teachers who attend are provided educational resources to prepare students for the field trip experience through a Google Drive they can access following their registration. The drive is accessible through the month of November. This project will also extend educational benefits by offering teaching resources and professional development to teachers who bring their students.
