Mission Elementary
Riding the Wave of Excellence!
October 20, 2024
Dear Mission Families,
Thank you for supporting students' participation in Red Ribbon Week activities and dressing up as their commitment to live a healthy and drug-free life. We celebrate this commitment starting by wearing our favorite sports gear on Monday! We also encourage you to hold periodic family conversations around the topic of making healthy choices. On Tuesday, October 29, our 3rd-5th grade students will attend a Drug-Prevention Assembly. This is an age-appropriate school assembly on drug awareness and prevention and educates students on the dangers of drug use with a focus on Fentanyl, the importance of making healthy choices, and provides resources for support and prevention
Fall Ball: We invite all families to join our dance this Friday, October 25 for our fall-themed dance from 5:00-7:00 pm. Costumes are optional. The following guidelines are expected:

No Masks or Helmets covering the face or head are allowed (Face Paint can cover no more than 25% of the face).

After careful consideration and for the safety and inclusivity of all our students, we have decided not to allow costumes on Halloween Day.

A Safety Tool with Instructional Benefits
Oceanside Unified is utilizing a state-of-the-art cloud-based camera system across our schools. This new camera system combines machine learning and artificial intelligence to deliver actionable insights from video data, significantly enhancing our campus security.
Installations will soon begin over the next few weeks and have been successfully completed at a number of other schools across OUSD, including two successful pilot schools last year .
Mission Elementary will use an advanced-technology system that offers a variety of benefits including enhanced accessibility of the instruction being delivered, and the capability to deliver an emergency notification system to every classroom.
This enhancement serves as an update to our current bell and intercom system. Each classroom teacher will have a device on a lanyard that amplifies sound throughout the classroom during every lesson. Every student, no matter where they sit, will be able to clearly hear the teacher and information being taught. In addition, the teacher has the option to use a classroom-installed camera to video record their lessons by pressing a button on the device, or to activate in the event of an emergency. This option allows the teacher to practice and improve instructional approaches by sharing with colleagues, as well as post lessons for students to
review if they missed a day of instruction.
We will provide updates on the progress of this project. OUSD's goal is to complete installation by January 2025.

- Protection Plan
- Device Usage Agreement
- More information: OUSD ITS webpage under Student Chromebook Program
Please remember that student devices are loaned to students and we ask that you encourage students to take great care of their device. Adding stickers or vandalizing devices in any way can lead to unnecessary repair or replacement costs for parents. It also saves a lot of time when students bring their device to class fully charged. We appreciate your cooperation and support in taking care of the devices.
Responsible Use of Technology
We want to emphasize the importance of monitoring and limiting your child's screen time and social media usage. While technology and social media can offer valuable educational and social opportunities, they also have the potential to become a significant distraction and, if not managed carefully, can have negative effects on your child's development. Below are 2 tips to support responsible use of technology.
TIP Number 1
Set Time Limits: Establish daily or weekly screen time limits based on your child's age and needs. Ensure they have enough time for other activities like homework, physical exercise, and social interactions.
TIP Number 2
Monitor Content: Regularly check the content your child is interacting with, whether it's through apps, games, or social media platforms. Ensure it's age-appropriate and safe.
