Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Students of Susan Nelson High School!
Hope you're having a great 3-day weekend!
In today's newsletter I'd like to focus on a new safety feature that is just getting started at Susan Nelson High School.
Video Doorbell
Starting with the new school year, the front doors of Susan Nelson will be locked during school hours to prevent unauthorized access. Parents, guardians, and community members with school-related business will be able to enter the school through a secure remote video access system (translation: a video doorbell!) located in our main office. To ensure the safety of our students and staff, all visitors will be required to provide proof of identification before being granted entry. Our district remains committed to fostering a secure and welcoming environment where everyone can feel safe.
As you are approaching the main entrance, look to the right of the main doors and you'll see our new video doorbell! Ring the doorbell, and one of our staff will answer and inquire as to how we can help you. As mentioned above, you'll need to provide some proof of identification. We'll then "buzz" you in and you can begin your visit to the school! The main entrance of the school (off of Pio Pico Road) is always the entrance for our parents, staff and visitors!
Thanks for your patience as we fully implement this new safety system!!
Thanks!
David Schlottman
Principal
Using the "Video Doorbell"
Ring the Doorbell
From inside we'll welcome you and ask for ID
Students: if you don't have an ID please let us know as you enter! We'll make sure to send you down to see Ms. Cammie in the library to get one made on the spot!

End of the First Attendance Month is Almost Here
Hey Students!
I'm so impressed with the hard work and dedication I've seen from all of you these past few weeks! Way to go!
As a reminder, this coming week marks the end of the first attendance month. This coming Friday, September 6th, your attendance will be posted. Students can earn a maximum of 17 days of attendance. Our goal is to achieve 100% attendance, or at least 90%, which is a school requirement. Remember, in independent study, completed assignments are equivalent to attendance.
To ensure you're on track, please check your course status:
Online Classes: Follow your course calendar: You should be on pace with your course calendar!
Packet Classes: You should have turned in 6 packets by Friday, September 6th.
When you meet with your teacher this week, please ask:
"How many days of attendance have I earned so far?"
"What do I need to do to achieve 100% attendance?"
If you are behind in your courses, this is the week to catch up. For those students who do not earn 90% attendance, teachers will most likely be communicating with parents. And remember, YOUR TEACHERS ARE YOUR BIGGEST CHEERLEADERS. If you need help or if there is an issue, please let them know. They are always ready to support you!!
Our hope is that all of our students earn at least 90% attendance!
Have an amazing 3-day weekend and we'll see everyone next week!
Mr. Schlottman
CAL SOAP Starting Up Again This Week
The CALifornia Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP) was established by the state legislature in 1978 and is charged with "improving the flow of information about
postsecondary education and financial aid while raising the achievement levels of low-income, elementary and secondary school students or geographic regions with documented low-
eligibility or college participation rates, and who are first in their families to attend college."
(For more detailed information check out this link:

Last year was the first time that Sparkman Alternative Education Center had received a Cal-SOAP "College Success Coach" to help all of our students (Susan Nelson and RVHS) focus on their post-secondary goals.
I'm super happy that we get to continue with Cal-SOAP, and especially since we get to have Ruth Ramirez come back and continue on as our College Success Coach! Welcome back Ms. Ramirez!
She will be here on Thursdays from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. If you'd like to meet with her please let your supervising Teacher, or our Counselor, Ms. Mojica, know!

Opportunities for Students from the City of Temecula
The City of Temecula’s Workforce & Education Development Division has shared with us some upcoming events that can be a big benefit to our students!
- Rocktober is an annual fall music competition that will be held on Saturday, October 26th in the Temecula Valley region. This event is a celebration of young and talented musicians who come together to showcase their skills and compete for exciting prizes. The competition takes place at the Community Recreation Center Amphitheater and features a total of 16 bands and musicians delivering outstanding performances to both a lively audience and a panel of judges. Participants include solo singers and bands.
- The annual Young Women's Career Conference is a breakfast event scheduled for the Thursday, December 5th at the Temecula Conference Center from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.
