Parkside Updates
Parkside Updates
Welcome to Week Six!
Students and Families,
We are already half way through our first quarter of the school year. Students received progress reports on Friday and should be setting goals on how to maintain or improve their grades over the next few weeks until report cards.
We also have some important attendance data to share from September. You can expect regular updates on attendance, iReady scores and other goals we are working on throughout the year. We appreciate your support in helping encourage your students to be the best version of themselves each day to help our whole school community improve.
Thank you,
The Parkside Staff
Progress Reports
Students received their first quarter progress reports on Friday October 4. Progress reports provide students and families with an update on a students achievement and citizenship in class. Grades are constantly changing and we recommend families monitor Aspen for updates on their child's performance in each of their classes. You will also notice that your child will receive a citizenship rating for each of their classes in the comments section. We have included the rubric below used for students to reflect on their pride, respect and responsibility in each of their classes.
If you have any questions about your child's grades please contact that teacher directly.
Attendance Results for September
Last year, 69% of Parkside students attended school for 90% of all school days (less than 18 absences). This year our goal is for 71.3% of students to attend school 90% or more of all school days. This goal is important because reducing the number of students who are chronically absent will help improve outcomes and lead to more academic success for these students. This September, 389 of our students have perfect attendance and another 184 students missed only one day. This means that 74.13% of students attended 90% or more which puts us on track to meet our goal.
If your child missed two or more days during the month of September, for any reason, they are on track to be chronically absent. Any student attending less than 90% of all school days is considered chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism is missing so much school for any reason that a student is academically at risk. Missing school and class time is detrimental to a student's own learning and can often be a distraction from the learning of others. If you are worried about your child's school attendance please talk with one of your child's teachers, their school counselor, our social worker or an administrator.
The Scholastic Book Fair is Coming Soon!
Get ready—the Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! This is a great opportunity to connect with your child over the thrill of bringing home new books to dive into again and again. Studies show that kids read more when they choose books for themselves. And fostering a love of independent reading leads to a wide variety of benefits—including academic success and improved mental health.
Dates: October 15-18, 2024 during the school day
There’s even more info on our school’s Book Fair homepage:
https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bf/parksidemiddleschool2
While you’re there, set up a Book Fair eWallet, the digital payment account that allows your child to shop for books at the Fair without cash. Then share your eWallet link so friends and extended family can add funds. https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/content/fairs/ewallet.html
When you fund an eWallet, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to a giving initiative called Share the Fair™. Your contributions directly support our students who need help buying books from the Fair. Many of us still remember the rush of finding the perfect book at a Scholastic Book Fair.
I hope you’ll join your child at our school’s Fair and share a reading experience they’ll remember forever. Happy reading!
