Maize South High School
A message from Principal Ms. Becky Sailor
Greetings Mavs!
I hope everyone had a relaxing and healthy Spring Break. I’m excited to finish this fourth term strong! Looking ahead, it will be here before we realize it. The Class of 2023 has 29 more days left of school. I want to make sure to outline some of the events coming up during April at Maize South High.
Celebrate!
We have had many student groups and individuals participate in and have success in many areas this past month.
The Boys’ Basketball team finished their season qualifying for the Kansas 5A State Basketball tournament. Maize South earned a sportsmanship certificate based on the ratings of the team, coaches, student section, cheerleaders, and fans.
This past weekend we had excellent performances at the regional solo and ensemble festival for Orchestra and Choir. These individual and group performance ratings qualify for they state festival later this month.
Makenna Biggs and Allison Kovach received a 1 rating for their solo string performances which is the highest rating earned.
Brayden Kutschka-Ta, Garrett Gassmann, Allison Kovach, Alex Dominguez, and Elise Marshall received a 1 rating for their string ensemble performance.
MSHS Mavrigals, Treble Ensemble, and Tenor/Bass Ensemble all received a 1 rating. Mavrigals were one point away from a perfect score of 80 while the Treble Ensemble received a perfect score.
Caleb Manuel and Erin White both received a 1 rating for their solo performances
Maize South has seven students who will travel to California at the end of April to compete at the BPA National Conference. Congratulations to Katy Pfeifer, Rafael Martinez, Cannon Reed, Dallen Marshall, Braelyn Delzer, Kaitlin Kelly, and Fern Banuelos.
In January, I shared our attendance focus this year in an effort to decrease chronic absenteeism and increase student connectedness to school. We are on track to cut our at-risk absent percentage almost in half!! Thank you for continuing to do your part as parents. Our teachers have been working hard on their side as well, making sure attendance is accurate daily. Please continue this effort and encourage your child/children to be at school on time in the mornings and throughout the day.

College & Career Center
We have started the last nine weeks of the 2022-2023 school year! What does that mean for you?
It is time to assess the success of this school year. How did you do? Can you do more or should you scale back? Will you become more involved in clubs and organizations next year? Don’t forget about building your resume. This will pay off when you begin applying for scholarships your senior year.
It is also time to think about how you will spend your summer. Will you take a summer class, find a job to develop new skills, look for volunteer opportunities or look for some type of internship?
Summer is a great time to begin looking at colleges. It is never too early! You often need to plan ahead when you are visiting colleges. Call the Admissions office and set up a tour.
For this year's juniors, the college application process opens up July 1st. Will it be a goal of yours to complete college application(s) before you get busy with your senior year?
There are still opportunities to attend Junior and Senior Days at many of the local colleges. If you need assistance, please stop by and see your College and Career Advocate. We are happy to help!
Visits scheduled through the College and Career Center:
- April 5th - Sophomores, juniors and seniors to visit Pittsburg State University (check your school email for registration).
- April 10th - Representatives and current students from the U.S. Service Academies will be presenting information about the application and nomination process. This information will pertain to West Point, the Naval and Air Force academies. The session will be from 6:30 - 8p in the MCA Hub.
- April 19th - We will be taking students to visit Butler Community College, Grizzly Day. Registration information coming soon. Watch your school email.
From the Nurse
GraceMed Dental Clinic Coming to Maize
GraceMed is a non-profit organization based in Wichita. Their Extended Care Permit hygienists will be coming to Maize USD 266 4/11/2023 to provide dental screenings, cleanings, fluoride varnish and sealants. All children at all Maize schools are eligible for this Clinic; the clinic location is at Maize High School for students from any building. If the patient is on free/reduced lunch, they can be seen, insurance or not. If you already have a dental home, please continue to see your dentist for regular cleanings and check-ups! If your child is seen for any services, you will receive a report stating what services were provided. On occasion, a Wichita State University senior hygiene student may accompany and assist us at a dental event.
Forms are due back no later than 4/4/2023
School screening and extended care services DO NOT take the place of a dental exam or include x-rays. Please continue to see your dentist regularly.
Extended Care Services
Extended Care Permit hygienists will be coming to provide dental cleanings, fluoride varnish, and sealants. No x-rays, exam, or restorative services such as fillings or tooth removal will be provided.
If you would like to sign your child up for Extended Care Services (cleaning, fluoride varnish, and sealants*) please fill out the consent form at the link below and return it to the school nurse as soon as possible. * Sealants are thin plastic-like coatings placed in the pits and grooves of permanent molars to reduce risk of getting a cavity. A properly sealed tooth is up to 50 percent less likely to develop a cavity in the future.
If dental services are provided for your child, you will receive a report stating what services your child received. On occasion, a Wichita State University senior dental hygiene student may accompany and assist us at a dental event.
If needed, your child can be transported to Maize High School for the screening using Maize Transportation Van by Maize Staff. Please sign the consent for transportation to and from MHS on the consent form.

With the announcement of the Kansas Scholastic Press Association regional contest results, OneMaize Media had an unprecedented showing in writing, design, photography, video, and social media.
42 of our 44 entries qualified for the state contest in May, and we have an excellent chance of another great showing in the 6A division at the state contest, where in our first year competing last year as a combined group, we grabbed a 2nd place overall finish.
Attached you can find a PNG of our results. Several students secured multiple 1st place wins at regionals. Thanks so much for supporting our group and we hope to continue the success that our MCA robotics team captured into our state event in early May!

If you need your student released during the school day, please contact the attendance office at 316-462-8000 as soon as possible so we can get a pass to them. The more advanced notice we have, the easier it will be to ensure your child is able to leave on time.
School Year Reminders
- Because students are not allowed to bring balloons or glass items on the bus, the Maize school district will not be accepting any flower, candy, cookie, or balloon bouquet deliveries to students.
- If your student is going to be tardy to school, please call the office. They are allowed three parent excused 1st block tardies per year, after that they are subject to detention.
- When a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the parents to call the attendance office within 24 hours to verify the reason for the absence. Please be sure to provide a doctor's note to the front office when your child has seen the doctor, dentist, etc., these visits won't count against your child's attendance. Medical notes can also be faxed to 462-8001.
- If you need to pick up your child from school during school hours, please call the office with the time your child needs to be released. They will receive a pass ahead of time and can check themselves out at the requested time. The exception to this, is lunch time. If you wish to check your student out for lunch, a parent must come in and sign the student out. Parents are not required to sign students back in.
- We have a "closed lunch" policy. Students will be expected to eat at school and NO OUTSIDE FOOD may be brought in or delivered.
- If your child is absent and will require homework, please email the teacher.
Thank you for your help with this. We appreciate it!
Driver Education
USD 266 Maize offers Online Driver Education each term during the school year. The online
driver education program strives to prepare students to become knowledgeable and respectful
of the law; to learn basic driving skills; and to develop a responsible attitude toward driving.
The instructors will provide critical experience to students; involve parents in the process, and
foster cooperative interaction with others in the driving environment. Students should be
studying the Kansas Driver Handbook and be ready to take a handbook test at the start of the
course. Students that have a Kansas Permit that is valid through the course dates will be
exempt from taking the handbook test. More detailed information on Online Driver Education
can be found on the high school website, (click on Counselor, Enrollment and Course Information, then Driver Education).
