Happy Friday!
It has been a wonderful week at Everitt. We had our first information night of the year on Wednesday night. We enjoyed meeting future Labradors and their families. Our amazing student council members led tours, answered questions, and helped families find their way to information sessions about each content area. Our incoming families were so impressed by our students -- they are so articulate, kind, and smart! We also introduced our new mascot at information night! Below, you will find photos of our new Lab and information night. Stay tuned for a naming the Labrador campaign run by student council. We have a second information night on November 14th. Please send anyone who would like to learn more about Everitt our way!
We also had our first music concert of the year on Tuesday evening. Our choirs, bands, and orchestras wowed us all with their musicianship. The concert ended with a visit from some dinosaurs during the Jurassic Park theme played by the advanced orchestra. It was a wonderful evening and it was great to see so many of you there!
Next week, we will have family/student/teacher conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Conferences are an open house format. You will find 6th grade teachers in the cafeteria; 7th grade teachers in the library; and 8th grade, electives, GT, advanced math, and diverse learner teachers in the student lounge. To allow all families to have time to speak to each teacher, we keep conferences to less than 5 minutes. Conferences will run from 4:30-6:45 and you are welcome to come either night. Be sure to bring your child with you to conferences -- they are an important part of any conversation about their education.
Next Wednesday is the last day of this quarter. Grades will be finalized on Friday of next week. Students can turn in missing assignments for the quarter up until Wednesday.
Thank you for supporting and believing in your neighborhood school. It is our privilege to partner with you!

Vaping Conversations
I'm going to leave this in here this week because it is that important. If you haven't yet had a conversation with your child, I would encourage you to do it. It was a valuable conversation at our house...
In the book for our book study, 10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People, David Yeager begins by talking about the ineffectiveness of the early campaigns to reduce youth tobacco use. He uses the story as a basis to help the reader understand the impact of the desire that all people between the ages of 10 and 25 have for status and respect. Reading that section of the book made me think a lot about the use of e-cigarettes by young people. I know that all of us want the precious young people in our lives to be healthy individuals in every way.
While 3.5% of middle school students reported regular e-cigarette use according to the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey, a much higher percentage of high school students admitted to regular use. This 3.5% feels pretty accurate for our Everitt students. While most of our students are not vaping, it is important that we, as parents, have regular conversations with our children about vaping. I know we are all aware of the risks of vaping for kids. Nicotine in vapes can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control. Vaping can also cause inflammatory processes and depress immune function in the lungs. It can also lead to chronic bronchitis and make it harder to fight off infections. Research also shows that adolescents who use nicotine may be more likely to use other drugs in the future. It is also becoming more common for cartridges to be laced with fentanyl which can cause difficulty breathing, sedation, disorientation, slow pulse and low blood pressure, and loss of consciousness.
But the way we have these conversations with our children matters. If we approach them in the way that we were approached in our youth, like the DARE campaign (This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs. Any questions?), we will have similar results. Campaigns that shamed youth for tobacco use actually increased tobacco use among teens. The campaign that shifted tobacco use was the #truth campaign in 2000-2006. Do you remember it? The ads showed teens shining a light on the way big tobacco was doing business. It created an opportunity for young adults to earn status and respect by seeking and calling out the truth.
If you would be willing to join me, I would like to try something as a community. It is no secret that the way vapes and e-cigarettes are advertised (using influencer and celebrity endorsements, bright colors and flavors attractive to kids) is intentional. This link takes you to an article about the 9 strategies that are currently being used by tobacco companies to increase use of e-cigarettes. All of these things are designed to speak to young people's need for status and respect. I would encourage you to look at the advertisements with your child and to have a conversation together about why companies would advertise this way. Our students are so smart, ethical, and capable. I know that your conversation with them will be powerful.
One of the things I love most about our community is that we have the same goals: growing smart, healthy, thoughtful, kind kids. Please reach out if you would like to talk more about how to talk about vaping with your child. We are happy to help.

Book Study Opportunity
Our book study on the book 10-25:The Science of Motivating Young People by David Yeager. The book is about how to help young people between the ages of 10 and 25 to feel inspired, enthusiastic, and ready to contribute rather than discouraged, outraged or overwhelmed. It is equally powerful for parents, educators, mentors, coaches, and managers. We have a wonderful group of parents and staff members and have powerful conversations each week. We meet on Wednesday evenings at 5:00 and, yes, we will meet during conferences. Purchase the book, read chapter 4, and join us in the conference room on Wednesday evening!

Elementary School Outreach
It's that time of year when current 5th grade families in our area are visiting middle schools and gathering info about their options. We are looking for people who would be willing to help get the word out about Everitt to parents at the elementary schools, whether that is by speaking as part of a panel or informally meeting for coffee just to chat with people. If this is something that interests you, please email everittpta@gmail.com. Thank you!
WAYS TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR EVERITT PTA:
- Does your employer provide matching funds or are they looking for a community non-profit to donate to?
Everitt PTA is a 501c3 non-profit and would be happy to talk to your employer or help with any paperwork needed. While we focus on community building and not fundraising, additional funds could be put to good use helping to outfit more classrooms with the SmartBoard technology your kids have used in some, and all rooms can make great use of them!
- Have you linked your King Soopers Community Rewards yet?
Help raise funds for Everitt just by doing your grocery shopping! Everitt PTA is enrolled in the King Soopers Community Rewards Program. This is a great way to support the school without spending additional money, all you have to do is enroll and King Soopers will give back to Everitt!🍎🥦🍊🌽

Aliana D is always kind and respectful to everyone in our PE class. She lends a helping hand whenever someone needs it and makes sure everyone is included.
Bryan D led his football team throughout our flag football unit. He included others and did a great job of explaining each individual play to all of his teammates.

Miles P is always kind and respectful to everyone in our PE class. He had a positive attitude throughout flag football and encouraged others to do their best.
Dominik L is always checking in with others to see how they are doing and if there is anything he can do to help.
Cap B did great during our flag football unit. He included others, learned all the skills necessary to be successful and helped others on his team be successful as well.
Trayvon H included everyone during our flag football unit and made sure they felt welcome and valued on his team. He both included them on his team as well as passing them the ball and making sure they had every chance to be successful too.
Tia H excelled at our flag football unit. She stepped out of her comfort zone to include herself on her team and make herself and her team successful.
Isaiah D showed his elevated understanding of football and helped spread that understanding to his whole team. By doing so he made himself and his team successful throughout our football games.
During Crew, Klara D was very insightful and thoughtful about our "values" activity. She shared just enough and shared it in a way that was beautifully done and well thought out.
Iver M was very insightful during our crew activity and responsive to other people's ideas as well. He help contribute to the overall product produced in Crew.
Gust D was a huge contributor to our Crew activity where he shared his well thought out ideas and values to our whole Crew. It is great to have his ideas shared and represented within our whole group.
Nick C was very insightful and respectful during our Crew activity. Nick used amazing art skills to enhance our values activity.
When I subbed for 4th hour science, Rigo H got right to work with his table partner and did an amazing job the entire class period. It is amazing to see his great work ethic and willingness to work with anyone and work well with everybody. He always shows up and is ready to go. During flag football, he emerged as the captain of his team and helped others out during game times.
During flag football, Noah B showed immense leadership with his team and helped others be successful while playing. When other students did not fully understand, Noah helped them out.
As we are wrapping up our first project, Cora G was kind and thoughtful of others when she brought in extra poster boards to share with others!
Cole M finished all of his work, then he helped other students with theirs.
Sofia C is always going above and beyond. Most recently, I asked students if they wanted to do a little extra to help with my timeline for the classroom and she provided the best caricatures of the first three presidents.
Teagan P is a model student. Even when chaos is swirling around her, Teagan is steadily focused on her own learning. She has an admirable ability to block out distractions and keep her sights locked on her own growth as she asks great questions, stays on top of her work, and is generally just a kind and awesome human.
Spencer B is making great choices to work hard in class and focus on his learning. He asks for support, stays on task, and is responsible about following up on his work.
When I subbed for Mrs. Galvez-Estevez, Brayden L answered the warm up question, acknowledging the person that answered before them, and using academic language he shared his own thinking about the topic as well. It was really fun and encouraging to see!
During 4th period science, Declan E did an incredible job working with others and advocating for his own learning. During independent work, he shared in depth thinking about the question asked and shared his reasoning in a complex way!
Xaniah N is a valuable member of our Crew class. She effectively communicates her needs and remains focused on her tasks.
During 4th period science, Addie C got right to work without hesitation and worked incredibly well with her table partner. She enabled him to be a part of both of their learning. It was really cool to see them work so well together.
Taylor D did an amazing job getting right to work in science and being a valuable part of her class. She did great working with others and explaining her well thought out answers to all the questions. Taylor showed her immense knowledge of the content being taught and what learning was going on.
