Holy Rosary
NEWSLETTER | TERM 1| WEEK 4| 28 FEB 2025
As we are about to embark on a long weekend, it is worth reflecting on the Church's social teachings, particularly those articulated in the encyclical *Rerum Novarum* (On Capital and Labor) by Pope Leo XIII in 1891. This document emphasised the importance of human dignity, the rights of workers, and the need for just working conditions, including reasonable working hours.
Creator God,
thank you for providing us
with the gift to share our talents.
Provide our community, our nation, our world
the fortitude to provide work for all
which is decent and fair.
Make us faithful stewards
of your creation
to enhance the human dignity
of our global family.
We ask this in the name of Jesus,
who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit
now and forever.
Amen
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends,
Thank you for the incredible response to our three-day parent survey. We received over 131 responses, representing a good cross-section of our school community, with only 10 choosing to remain anonymous. This response rate equates to 40% of families, with many amazing positive comments, celebrations, and common suggestions. One of the main celebrations is our parents' love for our school, rating it at 7.9 hearts. The choice of our school was predominantly because it is Catholic, followed by the positive community feel and its proximity to home.
I must also acknowledge the overwhelming positive view of our teachers (professional educators) by families. I have never seen so much support and positive comments, This is also reflected in the data from students, and it was touching to read some of the comments. The positive community activities are also a celebration, and we look forward to building upon our positive, welcoming Holy Rosary community.
We always welcome feedback or complaints. The established process is to raise the positive or concern with the classroom teacher in the first instance and then to leadership.
We acknowledge that communication is an area for improvement, and there are other valuable items that we will share with our School Advisory Board and Staff to help refine and improve our Holy Rosary learning community and Catholic School Improvement Plan.
As part of this, we also surveyed our students from Year 2 to Year 6 and gained their insight into our Holy Rosary learning community. They too love their school, their friends, and their teachers, which are a highlight of their experience through both knowing them and their positive interactions. Research shows that relationships are the heart of wellbeing and learning. Our children have many fantastic ideas about how to improve their school and community.
One area of feedback from students related to playground interactions, and we will be launching a program to support building strong friendships. On Tuesday, our staff will commence professional development with URSTRONG, providing our Professional Educators with a friendship skills curriculum, Friendology 101, to help kids establish and maintain healthy relationships, manage conflict with kindness, and increase their overall resilience.
Please enjoy your long weekend and stay safe in your travels.
Kind Regards
Michael O'Dwyer
Principal

Parking
A couple of reminders and dates to remember:
The Parish has informed us that funerals with a large gathering are planned for 10:30 AM on Thursday, March 6th, and Thursday, March 13th.
- The Newman Siena Centre next door has asked that parents and visitors to Holy Rosary School avoid parking in their car park, as it is already at full capacity.
To ensure accessibility, the ACROD bays in front of the school are reserved for Siena families and valid permit holders. Please use other areas for drop-off and pick-up.
- ·Please use the drive-through in front of the hall for drop-off, not in front of the school.
For a safe and efficient Kiss and Drive, park only in the designated bays. This helps keep traffic moving smoothly.
We appreciate your support for parking appropriately.
School Closed for Labour Day & Pupil-Free Day! 📅
Monday, March 3rd is Labour Day, and Tuesday, March 4th is a pupil-free day. School will be CLOSED on both days. Enjoy the long weekend! 🌸

“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” — J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
The Year 3 classes had a Feelings and Friends refresher yesterday where they remembered what uncomfortable and comfortable feelings are, what they do when they have uncomfortable feelings, what ingredients make a good friend and how to identify and resolve unfriendly behaviour. You can see their Friendship Cupcake outside of their classrooms.
All Year 4 students interested in Seasons for Growth should now have returned their parent consent forms. The groups will be formed in the next week and parents will be notified of the next steps.

Health News for Kindy & Pre-Primary Students
Undescended testes
Screening for undescended testes is recommended for boys at school entry, typically around 4 to 5 years of age. Sometimes, the testes (also known as testicles) are in the scrotum at birth but may move up into the groin or abdomen at around 4-10 years of age. This happens because the cord that attaches the testis to the abdomen doesn’t grow at the same rate as the child.
Undescended testes do not fully descend into the scrotum and can affect one or both testes. Parents or guardians can encourage older children to check for absence of testes in the scrotum themselves. The condition is not painful but can lead to complications such as twisting of the testis, a groin hernia, reduced fertility, and testicular cancer.

If you have any concerns, please contact your General Practitioner for advice.
Health News for Pre-Primary Students
Colour Blindness
It’s good to know if a child is colour blind, as they may struggle in school with activities that use colours, such as drawing and sorting blocks.
Colour blindness might become obvious after the age of 4 years and is more common among boys. Children who are colour-blind can see as clearly as other children but cannot tell the difference between some colours or see colours differently from other children. This usually happens with reds and greens, and sometimes with blues and yellows.
If your child is colour blind, it’s good to inform their teacher about the condition. This will allow the teacher to choose activities that don’t involve spotting colour differences.
For further details, please see open hyperlink Raising Children Network.
If you have any concerns, colour vision testing can be performed by some General Practitioners (GP), eye specialists or optometrists.
Health News for Year Six Students
Scoliosis
Early detection of scoliosis is crucial for managing child’s spinal health and ensuring the best possible outcomes. Scoliosis is a condition where the spine twists and curves sideways. It is more common in girls than in boys and typically becomes noticeable during growth spurts.
Most cases of scoliosis develop in otherwise healthy children, and the exact cause is often unknown.
Parents and children can look for signs such as uneven shoulders, uneven shoulder blades, a slightly tilted head, a noticeable curve in the back, or one hip being higher than the other. These can be spotted with a simple examination of your child’s back.
For more details on scoliosis and how to check for it, please open hyperlink Raising Children Network.
If you have any concerns, please contact your General Practitioner for advice.
