ZONES OF REGULATION
This year, RCMS has implemented Zones of Regulation schoolwide.
The purpose of Zones is to help students recognize and manage their emotions.
During Quarter 1, RCMS staff will focus on:
- discussing the four colors of Zones with students (green, blue, yellow and red)
- providing a space for students to work through their feelings when big emotions come to the surface
Throughout the year, we will discuss strategies for emotional regulation and how to communicate our feelings appropriately in our shared spaces.
Look for more information about this strategy in future Newsletters.
Want to use Zones of Regulation at home? Reach out to Magda Sobalvarro-Ochoa, Victoria Eels, or Karen Naylor for more information.
Below is the chart that staff use to discuss this process with our students.

SAFETY GUIDELINES
This year, students will continue to have the opportunity to go outside for “recess” after they finish their lunch. This year, students are not allowed to bring balls or toys of any type to school. In the interest of student and staff safety, no outside food or deliveries will be allowed. As a reminder, per MCPS guidelines, any adult entering the school building will be asked for picture identification.
Ensuring safe drop-off and pick-up is part of our renewed focus on safety and security. As a reminder, traffic in front of the building and in the carpool lane is very busy before and after school. When dropping off your child, please help us by pulling up as far forward as possible, abiding by the lines in the drop off loop. Please plan your travel time so that your child arrives at school with enough time to go to their locker and arrive in class on time. We also ask that the staff parking lot not be utilized for drop-off purposes. For the safety of all children, please be sure to obey all traffic laws when dropping off and picking up, including no U-turns or stopping to drop-off students on Waring Station Road.

6TH GRADE NEWS
Dear 6th Grade Families,
New Year, New Goals: Supporting Your Sixth Grader's Success
As we enter the final stretch of the semester with just 3.5 weeks to go, it’s the perfect time to help your sixth grader reflect on their accomplishments and set goals for the year ahead. Goal setting is a powerful way for preteens to build confidence, stay motivated, and take ownership of their success. Here are some tips for supporting your child academically and socially:
Talking About Academic Goals
- Reflect Together: Ask your preteen about their proudest achievements and any challenges they’ve faced this semester. Celebrate their efforts and brainstorm areas they’d like to improve.
- Set SMART Goals: Encourage goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, “I will practice math on IXL for 10 minutes each night to improve my quiz scores.”
- Create a Plan: Work with your child to map out steps to achieve their goals. This could include organizing a homework schedule, visiting the library, or asking for help from teachers.
Supporting Healthy Friendships
- Open Conversations: Ask your child what they value in a friend and discuss how to be a good friend in return. Talk about handling disagreements with kindness and respect.
- Practice Role-Playing: Rehearse scenarios they might face with peers, like standing up for themselves or inviting someone new to join a group.
- Encourage Balance: Discuss the importance of balancing social time with academics and other responsibilities, reinforcing the value of self-care.
Together, we can empower our students to finish the semester strong and head into the new year with purpose and positivity. Let’s help them shine!
Stay tuned for updates and resources as we wrap up the semester. As always, thank you for your partnership!
-Your Grade 6 Leadership Team

Middle and High School students can earn SSL hours with Project Linus in 2 ways:
- Attending one of our monthly meetings and helping us to make blankets. Our first meeting of the year will be Monday, September 9. We meet once a month, on the 2nd Monday of the month, from 6:30-8:30 PM in the cafeteria of Wood Middle School in Rockville. For our friends who live further north, on November 18 and December 16, we will have additional meetings, located at Baker Middle School in Damascus. All the meeting dates are listed on the attached flyer. Please do note that we provide all the necessary supplies and our adult volunteers supervise the blanket making activities. No special skills or experience is required. No pre-registration is required -- just show up and have fun. We provide completed SSL forms at the end of the meeting.
- Students can also earn SSL hours by making blankets outside of meetings, provided that pictures and documentation are provided. We ask that students making blankets at home first attend one of our meetings, or contact us at projectlinus.mc@gmail.com, to make sure they are following the proper instructions.
