Back-to-School
School starts next week!
Welcome Back!
I hope this letter finds you well-rested and ready for the new school year. On behalf of the school board and our staff, I want to take a moment to express just how important our partnership with you is to the success of our students.
Family engagement is one of our three-year district priorities and speaks to our district theme of Stronger Together: Building Bridges with Kindness. This year, I’m excited to continue building on the strong foundation we’ve established together. Some of our family and community engagement initiatives are listed below.
Third Annual Reading and Resources: Last week we hosted our third annual Reading and Resources community event, spearheaded by Public Information Officer, Ruth Richardson. In partnership with more than 20 local organizations, families received information about numerous resources, free backpacks, school supplies, and books, along with free haircuts, to help our students get ready for the new school year. It’s events like these that remind us of the incredible power of community support.
Coffee and Conversation: These informal meet-ups will continue to provide an opportunity for families to discuss what’s important to support students’ academic journey. We will start this later in the fall. Please stay tuned for more information and invitations.
Monthly Safety Meetings: Safety remains a top priority for our district, and the district will continue our important monthly safety meetings with the County Sheriff's Office, Sedro-Woolley Police Department, and Sedro-Woolley Fire Department.
Monthly City Leadership Meetings: The district will also continue engaging with the City of Sedro-Woolley and the Central Skagit Public Library through monthly meetings.
PTO and Community Organization Meetings: I will be attending PTO meetings and community organization meetings (e.g. Rotary, Lions, Soroptimist, Chamber of Commerce) throughout the year. This is another opportunity to foster relationships between the school and our broader community.
Senior Center Visits: I am looking forward to visiting the Sedro-Woolley Senior Center this year to connect with an important part of our community and ensure that our senior citizens are involved and informed about the great things happening in our schools.
Joint Discipline Committee Parent Advisory Group: This group was formed late last year and will start meeting in November. They are tasked with providing input on key issues related to student discipline that the Joint Discipline Committee is considering.
Finally, I want to encourage you to reach out directly to your child’s teachers and principals with any concerns or questions you may have throughout the school year. Open and clear communication is key to resolving issues and ensuring that every student has the support they need to succeed. If you have concerns that you feel need to be addressed at the district level, please refer to the communication tree below. This resource will guide you on the best steps to take after addressing the matter at the building level.
Together, we can make this school year one of growth, learning, and success for every student. I look forward to working closely with you, hearing your ideas, and continuing to strengthen the partnership that makes our school community so special.

New Medication Form Required for Students Needing Medication During School Hours
For parents whose children require medication during school hours, the Sedro-Woolley School District requires a new medication form to be completed. Ideally, all medications, whether prescription or over-the-counter (OTC), should be given outside of school hours under the supervision of a parent or guardian. However, if a student must receive medication during school hours or at school-sponsored events, parents must submit a written request along with a written authorization from a licensed healthcare practitioner (LHP) who is authorized to prescribe medication. For medications administered for more than 15 consecutive days, the LHP must also provide updated, unexpired instructions. The district has established procedures to ensure the safe administration of medications, including staff training, secure storage, accurate record-keeping, and student confidentiality. For more detailed information, please refer to School District Policy and Procedure 3419 and 3420, which outline the rules for self-administration of asthma and anaphylaxis medications and anaphylaxis prevention and response.

Language Access Plan: Supporting Families in Sedro-Woolley
The Sedro-Woolley School District is committed to fostering strong family partnerships through its comprehensive Language Access Plan. This plan ensures that all families, regardless of their primary language, have access to vital school information and services.
To effectively communicate with parents and guardians in a language they understand, the district provides interpreters for in-person and virtual meetings and events. Schools must request interpreters at least five business days in advance and confirm the language needs of the family.
Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, the district is required to track interpreter usage and preferences, in line with new state requirements.
For more information or to request language services, please contact Monica Vivanco at mvivanco@swsd101.org.
In an effort to improve our services, we would appreciate it if parents/guardians who request interpretation services provide feedback.
Onsite Medical Services for Staff and Students
The Woolley Wellness Center at Sedro-Woolley High School offers convenient onsite medical services for district staff, as well as students from Sedro-Woolley High School and State Street High School, who may have difficulty accessing healthcare due to scheduling conflicts.
The clinic operates Monday to Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Located in the main hallway of Sedro-Woolley High School, across from the ASB office, the center is run by PeaceHealth. To schedule an appointment, call 360-856-7995 during clinic hours.

Understanding the Timeline of a Lockdown at Sedro-Woolley Schools
A lockdown can be a stressful situation for everyone involved, especially for parents and guardians who want to know what is happening at their child's school. To help families understand what to expect, we've outlined the steps taken during a lockdown in our district.
When a lockdown is issued, it is either a directive from law enforcement or school administration after receiving information that requires further investigation. Here is a breakdown of what happens next:
Phase 1: Buildings Secured
Our top priority is to ensure all students are safe and accounted for. This step may take some time, and during this phase, parents and guardians will not be allowed to pick up their students from the school. Everything else waits until Phase 1 is complete.
Phase 2: Law Enforcement Communication
We work closely with law enforcement to gather information and establish a plan based on the situation.
Phase 3: Communication Created
Once the plan is set, we create a clear and cohesive message to distribute to staff and families.
Phase 4: Notification to Staff
The school board, district leaders, and building staff are informed about the situation and the plan.
Phase 5: Email/Text Sent
Information is sent to impacted families and all employees through our messaging system. To receive texts, you must be opted in through Skylert, and your contact information must be up-to-date.
Phase 6: Social Media Posting
Information is then shared with the public on district social media channels. This method allows for the fastest, instant distribution of updates that can be widely shared.
During a lockdown, our schools follow a Standard Response Protocol:
Students are instructed to:
- Move away from sight
- Maintain silence
- Not open the door
School staff are trained to:
- Recover students from hallways, if possible
- Close and lock classroom and perimeter doors
- Turn out the lights
- Move everyone away from sight
- Maintain silence
- Not open the door
- Prepare to evade or defend if necessary
We understand that parents and guardians may receive a text message from their child before any official communication is sent through School Messenger or our social media channels. We know this can be frustrating, but please be assured that we are working as quickly as possible to get accurate information from law enforcement to share with you.
By understanding these phases and protocols, we hope families will feel more prepared and reassured during an emergency. Thank you for your cooperation and support in keeping our schools safe. Remember, if you see something, say something.

2024-2025 School Supply Lists
Free Breakfast & Lunch for ALL Students
Free breakfast and lunch meals for ALL students will continue for the 2024-2025 school year. The continuation of free meals is possible through implementation of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). CEP is an option for school districts that meet a certain minimum of students who directly qualify for free meals through a variety of assistance programs, including Basic Food benefits, Medicaid, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), McKinney Vento or Migrant programs.
The Sedro-Woolley School District will no longer distribute and process Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications. To ensure that the other educational services are still available, families who previously qualified for Free and Reduced-price meals via application should complete the Benefit Application. This application allows the district to track income data for families that is used to determine funding levels for a variety of educational programs offered throughout the district.
Completed applications can be returned to the school office or Food Service office at 780 Cook Road, Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284.
Other educational benefits for families who qualify via the Family Income Survey include:
- Reduced ASB and athletic fees.
- Reduced health insurance coverage (MD children's health programs)
- Free or low cost internet (Comcast)
- May qualify for reduced testing fees for ACT or SAT; AP testing and College in the Classroom fees
- Discounts on fees associated with applying for college
Please note that CEP allows the service of one free breakfast and one free lunch meal daily. If students wish to have more than one meal per day, they will need to have money added to their food service account online or in the school office and will be charged accordingly. In addition, milk is an a la carte item. When taken by itself, the charge is $0.60. Students can get milk for free by ensuring they select a reimbursable meal, which can include a milk, fruit and vegetable. Students are not required to get the daily entrée.
Any questions about CEP or the Food Service Program can be directed to the Food Service office at 360-855-3515.

**Please note that most youth sports are run by volunteer boards of directors. Coaches are most often fellow parents and there is a significant referee shortage amongst almost every sport. Volunteering to coach or training to become a referee is one of the best opportunities a parent or guardian has to stay involved in their child's life through various stages of development!
Volunteering in Our Schools
The Sedro-Woolley School District appreciates your interest in volunteering. Please read the SWSD Volunteer Handbook before you complete the background form.
Please complete the volunteer application and submit all information requested.
You are required to complete a new application every two years. Please allow up to two weeks for processing. All volunteers must provide a photo ID each time they visit a Sedro-Woolley School District school.

Reporting Harassment, Intimidation or Bullying
The district uses a reporting system for harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) through SafeSchools Alert. Students, parents and community members can report HIB and other unsafe behaviors anonymously through phone, text, email or web. Students, parents and community members should utilize SafeSchools Alert as it creates a record of the report, and each incident must be investigated. Visit https://swsd-wa.safeschoolsalert.com/ to report an incident or use the alternative methods below.
App: Search for “SafeSchools Alert” in the App Store to download for free.
