COACHES' CORNER
Hi, I’m Dena Leslie, Summit's K-5 Math Instructional Coach. I have the pleasure of supporting teachers with their math instruction by providing guidance, strategies, and resources to help create engaging math experiences for students. I also get to spend time in kindergarten classrooms, exploring math concepts alongside our youngest learners, fostering a love for numbers and problem-solving right from the start. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of their early math journey!
In kindergarten math, children embark on an exciting journey to build essential skills that foster a strong foundation for future learning. This year, your child will focus on the following essential skills that will help develop strong number sense and lay the groundwork for future math success:
Counting and Cardinality: Understanding that counting involves more than just reciting numbers; it includes recognizing that numbers represent quantities and that the last number counted indicates how many objects are in a group.
Number Sequence: Reciting numbers in order, such as “1, 2, 3, 4,” helps children grasp how numbers are organized.
One-to-One Correspondence: This involves matching one object to one number while counting. For example, saying “one” for each block reinforces the idea that each number corresponds to a specific quantity.
Subitizing: The ability to instantly recognize small quantities without counting each object, such as knowing there are three apples just by looking.
Number Recognition: Associating spoken numbers with written numerals, so when they hear "five," they can identify the symbol “5.”
Demonstrate fluency for Addition and Subtraction within 5
Addition and Subtraction: Students model simple joining and separating situations with sets of objects and are introduced to addition and subtraction equations, such as 5 + 2 = 7 and 7 – 2 = 5.
Classifying and Counting: Classify objects into given categories, count the number of objects in each category, and sort the categories by count.
Geometric Understanding: Students describe their physical world using geometric ideas, identifying, naming, and describing basic two-dimensional shapes presented in various sizes and orientations.
You can support your child's learning at home by engaging in counting activities, pointing out numbers in your environment, and playing number and shape games together. Be sure to visit our Math Corner for resources you can use at home, and stop by every now and then as more will be shared throughout the year!
