Bathroom Vandalism
Vandalism is a strong word, but it unfortunately fits.
I am so sad to report that we have had three instances of bathroom vandalism this week which included (but are not limited to) destroying the latch and inner-workings of a paper towel dispenser, twisting and kinking the water supply line to the toilet, and shutting off the toilet water. All instances occurred in the same single-person bathroom. Our bathrooms are designated for grade levels and/or classrooms. I have spoke to the classes designated to the bathroom, but I cannot guarantee that kids in other grade levels/classes haven't used that bathroom.
In my class discussions, we talked about:
- Appropriate and inappropriate behavior in the bathroom
- Their job is to go to the bathroom, wash their hands, and then head back to class.
- We are short staffed on custodians. Our two custodians are working super hard just to keep the building clean and functioning. Bathroom vandalism makes their jobs harder.
- If anyone sees anything awry in a bathroom (or anywhere), they need to tell an adult immediately so we can investigate.
- Kids sign out to use bathrooms and we have hallway video cameras, but if we do not know about an issue in a timely manner, it is hard to figure out! The reports this week have come long after the incident.
News From Our Reading Specialist, Mrs. Buckley
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is an unexpected difficulty in learning to read. Dyslexia takes away an individual's ability to read quickly and automatically, and to retrieve spoken words easily, but does not dampen one’s creativity or ingenuity. Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity.
New Hampshire law requires public and charter schools to screen students for dyslexia and related disorders, including dysgraphia, dysphasia, and reading fluency disorder. The law is outlined in RSA 200:58 and RSA 200:59

M&Ms Learning About Graphs
Original Works
For many years the GPTG has worked with the company Original Works as a fundraising effort. Original Works sells a variety of products including mugs, notecards, flags, pillowcases, key chains etc. The products are printed with your student's artwork. We have been lucky to have the support of our amazing Art Teacher, Ms. K. All classes are currently creating artwork with Ms. K. The art will be sent to Original Works mid-October. Original Works will scan the artwork and send it back to GVS with ordering instructions in early November. Online orders are due mid-November. Orders are scheduled to arrive before the winter holidays and make great gifts.
Help GVS produce less waste!
Throughout our school and in every classroom is a TerraCycle bin, which one of our volunteer parents dutifully picks up every week.
What is TerraCycle, you ask? It is a company committed to putting less waste in our landfills by recycling difficult-to-recycle items. Toothpaste tubes, bread wrappers, Keurig pods. You know, all that stuff that you stand over your trash and wonder--is this recyclable? The answer is "yes," and TerraCycle is the solution.
How can you help? Please talk to your kids about tossing their (empty) applesauce/snack pouches and other lunch wrappers in the TerraCycle bins instead of the trash. No need to be spic 'n' span, just empty and not dripping so that the bins don't attract fruit flies. The bins also accept used school supplies, courtesy of Staples' recycling program.
Can Tabs for David’s House
The Grantham Village School third grade class is collecting can tabs for David's House. Please send them in whenever you can. We have collected about 1,400 pounds since we began 20 plus years ago! We drop them off at David's House, where a volunteer brings them to a recycling facility for cash. The money is used to help defray operating expenses. Last year we collected 107 pounds! Let’s see if we can collect over 100 pounds again this school year.
Click on the David’s House link to learn more about this community treasure.
Thank you for your support!

Note about #4:
Our goal is to eventually only have preschoolers in the buckle lane. If your kiddo is in kindergarten or above - practice, practice, practice! With that said, please continue to use the buckle lane until your child is able to navigate the door and buckles on their own.
