COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Throughout the fall semester, school counselors will be meeting with 12th graders to review graduation progression and discuss post secondary planning.
Does your student not know what they want to do after high school? If so, we encourage them to sign up for the ASVAB. This test is the military entrance exam, but it is one of the best personal inventories available. Students can designate whether or not the score is sent to the military branches, as well. Our first available date to participate is September 13th. Your student can sign up by scanning the QR code. It is free and during school hours.
The state of TN identifies September as College Application and Exploration Month. Several post-secondary institutions will offer a "free application week" at some point during the month including UT system schools, MTSU, ETSU, TN Tech, and Vanderbilt. Some institutions will waive application fees for the entire month! See the attachment for a complete list of schools participating.
High-achieving 10th and 11th grade students can register for the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which is a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT (a college entrance exam). The PSAT/NMSQT measures: Critical reading skills, Math problem-solving skills, and Writing skills. Taking the PSAT as a 10th grader can ease some of a student’s test anxiety about future college entrance exams. Taking the PSAT as a 11th grader offers students the opportunity to qualify the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Specific Details:
The PSAT is a digital test! Students will test through the Bluebook application.
- To register for the PSAT: Go to the Guidance Office and sign-up for the test by paying the $25 registration.
Registration Deadline: Friday, 9/13
Test Date: Wednesday, 10/16 7:45-12:00 (students will be excused from MHS morning classes).
Parents-in case you missed the Open House presentations Thursday night, we've added information here. The dual enrollment presentation is for 10th and 11th graders and the Senior Checklist is for 12th graders. Senior parents will also want to consult the MHS website to view the 12th grade Sway presentation for more detailed info.
The United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) is an intensive week-long educational experience and scholarship sponsored by the United States Senate for outstanding high school junior and senior students who are interested in pursuing careers in public service. The mission of the United States Senate Youth Program is to provide a yearly opportunity for selected students to gain an in-depth view of the Senate and the federal government overall as well as a deeper understanding of the interrelationship of the legislative, judicial and executive branches. The program provides a foundation of knowledge and encouragement for those considering a future of public service on the local, state or national level.
To qualify, students must hold or have held student body office or another elected or appointed position in their communities and show academic interest and aptitude in government, history and politics. The program is merit-based and highly competitive and the chosen delegates are consistently of the highest caliber in the nation. For more information about this prestigious program or specific scholarship criteria, please visit https://ussenateyouth.org/.
MHS will nominate ONE deserving junior or senior for this prestigious program. Please pick up a Nomination request form from Ashley Murphy in the Guidance Office, all nomination requests forms are due by Monday, September 12th, 2024.

STUDENT CHECK OUT PROCEDURES
Check-outs should be held to a minimum and are limited to the following:
Emergency - Decision to be made by the principal or assistant principals.
Prior arrangement - If a written request is received by officials in the student services office prior to the beginning of the school day, the student will be dismissed at the requested time. The checkout note must include the student’s full name, date, time of dismissal, phone number where parent/guardian can be reached for verification, and signature of the parent/guardian.
- The parent/guardian comes to the main entrance office to sign the student out.
Students who become sick during the school day must report to the assistant principal’s office/school nurse before they call home. The assistant principal’s office will assist the student and permit the student to call home. The student will remain in the assistant principal’s office or with the school nurse until he/she receives permission to go home or until he/she is picked up by a parent/guardian.
Students are allowed to check out during third block only for medical or legal purposes, and proper documentation must be provided. Students are not allowed to check out to retrieve items needed for school. Leaving school without permission will result in disciplinary action.
Students checking out of school on an altered schedule day will receive an unexcused absence unless the school is provided the appropriate legal or medical documentation.

CELL PHONE and HEADPHONES/EARBUDS POLICY
Although cell phones may be used responsibly, they may also be used in ways that are distracting and diminishes student learning in the school environment. We hope that all MHS students learn the lifelong skill of using technology respectfully, responsibly, and in a way conducive to working and learning together.
Students may use cell phones before the school day, during break, during lunch, and after school. Students may not receive, nor make calls or take pictures and videos with their cell phone. Classroom consequences for unauthorized cell phone use will be handled by the teacher. Any student who needs to make a phone call may do so in Student Services.
Many current headphone devices, including AirPods, include a noise cancelling feature that reduces the ability of an individual to hear announcements or directions in the hallways and shared areas. The inability to hear critical information makes the use of these devices a safety concern during the school day.
Headphones/earbuds/AirPods are not permitted to be used during the school day – to include break and lunch timeframes. With teacher permission, students may use one-eared wired headphones attached to their school issued student device when assigned independent work within the classroom as permitted by the teacher.
