Parent/Teacher Interviews
It was great to have so many parents able to talk with staff during our Parent / Teacher interviews last week. I have had fantastic feedback from parents and staff. The opportunity to meet early in the year and to get a clearer understanding of how your child is performing has again been appreciated.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN for our Year 3 and 5 students began last week. I want to congratulate all our students who have been participating. NAPLAN testing will run over this week and early into next, with the last day of testing on Monday 25 March. Students will have completed four tests during this time. Well done Year 3 and 5 students – keep trying your best and we will be proud of your achievements.
2025 Kinder Parent Session
Next Tuesday 26 March at 6pm is our 2025 Kindergarten Parent Information Session. It is an opportunity for parents who are planning on sending their children to Woonona PS in 2025, to come in and learn a little bit more about the process and what to look forward to, and plan, between now and the beginning of the coming year. There is no need to register, just come along. If you know of families who live in our catchment and are planning to enrol for the coming year, please let them know. The session will take place in the school hall.
Cross Country – Wednesday 27 March
Our school Cross Country Carnival is scheduled to be held on Wednesday 27 March, with students in Years K-1 to remain at school. They will have their Cross Country early in Term 2. Students in Years 2-6 will walk to Hollymount Park. Notes for the Cross Country Carnival went home last week. Students are encouraged to wear their sports house colours on this day.
Easter Hat Parade
Our school will be having our much-anticipated annual Easter Hat Parade on Thursday 28 March at 9:15am. It will take place under the COLA. We can't wait to see students’ creative flair! There will also be an Easter raffle drawn so be sure you get your tickets! We are looking forward to a fantastic morning and wonderful way to start our Easter long weekend.
Road Safety
Our school is a complex place at drop off and departure times. We ask that our parents show patience and lead by example by following road rules whilst in your car and crossing at safe and appropriate places, whilst walking or riding. Information on keeping kids safe around schools can be found at: Keeping Our Kids Safe Around Schools - fact sheet (nsw.gov.au)
Harmony Day
Thursday marks our Harmony Day Celebrations. I’d like to thank the team of teachers who have brought this day together, led by Mrs Ney. Students are encouraged to wear orange (or lots of colour if they have no orange).
Choir
Our Stage 2 and Stage 3 choir is off and running for 2024. It has been very pleasing to see so many keen and excited students, willing and wanting to be involved in choir. Thank you to Mrs Ney and Ms Gibson for taking the lead for choir in 2024, a program that is clearly valued by many of our students
Regional Swimming Carnival
Last Tuesday, our school’s best swimmers travelled to Dapto Pool to compete against the best swimmers in the whole South Coast Region. I want to congratulate these swimmers who, from all accounts, were outstanding representatives of our school and district.
In addition, we have some very exciting news.
Logan will be crowned as the Junior Girl Champion of the Carnival – finishing with five first places to complete an outstanding day of racing.
Jimmy finished with two first places and a third that will see him with a genuine shot at 11 Years Boy Champion – yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, Frankie finished 3rd in the 8 Year Girls 50m Freestyle.
Logan, Jimmy and Frankie will now head to Sydney Olympic Pool where they will compete at the state carnival on 11 and 12 of April – we wish them all the best as they compete against not only the best swimmers in New South Wales, but in many cases some of the best swimmers in Australia.
The good news doesn’t just stop there… one of the early events of the day was the Junior Girl Relay and I am proud to announce that our team of Logan, Frankie, Imogen and Audrey won this event and will also now be heading off to the state championships. This is an amazing achievement and I know how excited these girls will be to challenge themselves at the next level of competition.
P&C AGM
Last Wednesday, was our 2023-2024 P&C Annual General Meeting. This meeting is an important day on the school calendar.
I would like to start by congratulating the outgoing committee of 2023-2024. Your contributions to the students, staff and families of Woonona Public School are highly important to the collaborative atmosphere within our school. 2023-2024 was highly successful, with many events returning to their pre-COVID ways. I sincerely thank you all for your efforts throughout 2023-2024.
I am a big believer that a key component to a successful school is a close working relationship between the P&C and staff. This has been even more evident and important as we navigated our way through COVID. I believe that it is the hard-working P&C, led by the wonderful Janelle, that has helped unite the school and community and for all they have done, I thank them.
To the incoming committee I would like to welcome you to the 2024-2025 Woonona Public School P&C Committee. I look forward to what will no doubt be another fun, enjoyable and profitable year for Woonona Public School P&C.
Our P&C Executive for 2024-2025 is:
President: Janelle
1st Vice President: Liz
2nd Vice President: Kristy

Year 1 Studying Information Text
During Weeks 6 and 7, Year 1 studied information texts.
Each student researched an animal and found out facts about their appearance, diet and habitat. We wrote an information report using this research. Students then created a diorama of the habitat their animal lives in. Year 2 visited us for a diorama showcase.
Year 1 finished the fortnight with a reading party. We shared facts we loved, showed information books, played book bingo and watched the documentary ‘The magical land of Oz’ which was all about Australian animals.
