VIRTUE OF THE MONTH - ACCEPTANCE
Our Virtue of the Month:
During the month of May we will focus on the virtue of Acceptance. God wants us to make friends with everyone no matter how different they may look or act.
An accepting person is…
· willing to treat everybody as a member of a group
· avoids judging others
· welcoming to those different than himself/herself
· loving and happy with who he/she is
The virtue of ACCEPTANCE means we accept ourselves and others just the way we are. Acceptance is the ability to respect the dignity and rights of people of all ages, beliefs, genders, cultures, and/or abilities. God created all of us in His image, and belonging to God’s family means that we love and welcome everyone as Jesus did. Sometimes, we find ourselves in situations where it is easier to follow the crowd than to stand up for what we know is right. Remember that everyone wants to feel like they belong, and Jesus teaches us to accept everyone, even when it is difficult.
For by the grace given to me, I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us. Romans 12:3-6
Let us now pray...for the virtue of acceptance - the strength to trust that God is at work in everyone’s life despite what we think. AMEN
Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectation - I AM A TEAM PLAYER
I AM A TEAM PLAYER!
· I co-operate with others in all that I do
· I value everyone's work
· I respect and listen to others
· I think of others before myself
· I follow rules of fair play
· I work hard in school so that I can build my community and make it a better place
Because I am a team player, I know that 'Together is Better', and we will live our lives like Jesus.

Catholic Education Week
The theme chosen for the upcoming 2025 Catholic Education Week is: Catholic Education: Pilgrims of Hope L’éducation catholique: Pèlerins de l’espérance.
“We must fan the flame of hope that has been given to us.” (Letter on the Jubilee Year of Hope, February 11, 2022)
The five sub themes for Catholic Education week explore ways to live out Pope Francis’ call for each one of us to be Pilgrims of Hope…
- by honouring human dignity / honorent la dignité humaine (Monday)
- by caring for creation / prennent soin de la création (Tuesday)
- by responding to the poverties in our world / luttent contre les pauvretés (Wednesday)
- by serving in solidarity / servent en solidarité (Thursday)
- by living as peacemakers / vivent en artisans de paix (Friday)
Catholic Education Week Prayer
Hope is our calling, O Lord,
and the destination of our pilgrim journeys.
As we mark this Jubilee Year of hope,
keep our eyes focused on Jesus,
and on the hope he reveals to us.
All our hope is in you, O God, in the name of Jesus
our Lord and companion.
Amen
May 1st - Feast of St. Joseph the Worker - Staff Appreciation Day
In his first letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul says, “For just as the body is one and has many members and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.” As in the scriptural example, all individual staff members, are parts of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. Whatever our roles, we are each responsible for striving to fulfill the mission of this board and, ultimately, the education and well-being of each and every learner in our system.
The Board of Trustees unanimously proclaimed May 1, as the annual Staff Appreciation Day in Dufferin-Peel. As May 1 is the Feast Day of St. Joseph the Worker, this is an aptly chosen day to celebrate, recognize and appreciate the staff of the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School board, for all they do to support the mission and ministry of this board and for their contribution to Catholic education and the success, well-being and faith formation of all learners in Dufferin-Peel.
LUNCH MONITORS NEEDED
We are looking for some more dynamic members of our community who may wish to support the school as a lunch monitor! If you want to be considered for on-call support- that is also welcome!
To apply, please contact the office. You will require a valid (less than 6 months old) Vulnerable Sector Level 3 Police Check.

Today we continue this tradition by extending an invitation to all Catholics to take part in continuing to care for the vulnerable among us. ShareLife supports a number of Catholic organizations within the community and Archdiocese of Toronto. Student involvement in school-based activities has already raised some funds. So far, we have raised $790.65. Thank you for giving generously.

PLANNING AHEAD - CLASS PLACEMENTS
In arriving at the decision regarding placement of your child for the upcoming year, every consideration is given to individual needs. This decision is made in collaboration with all staff who have been directly involved in your child’s education this year. If you feel that there are specific needs which should be addressed in determining the placement of your child, please feel free to put them in writing. We ask for all submissions to be sent to the office no later than Friday May 9, 2025. Your request will be considered at our grade promotion meetings. We remind you that it would not be appropriate to request one teacher over another as placements are subject to change. However, if there is other information regarding your child’s learning style, or other considerations of which we ought to be aware, please advise us of these facts in your letter
Sun Safety
With summer approaching and the warmer weather we are reminded about sun safety. Overexposure to the sun can cause skin damage. We remind students regularly to take precautions to protect their skin during recess times and to take precautions to be safe in the sun. The following are some suggestions when working and playing in the sun:
¨ Drink cool water. Anyone in a hot environment should drink cool water in small amounts frequently—one cup every 20 minutes. Avoid caffeinated soft drinks which cause dehydration.
¨ Dress Appropriately. Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing
¨ Wear a hat to protect both the eyes and the skin
¨ When possible, stay out of direct sunlight
¨ Know your skin type; ie: fair skinned people are more sensitive to ultraviolet radiation
¨ Wear sun block; the higher the protection factor number, the greater the protection.
Parents are encouraged to reinforce these strategies with their children regularly.
MAY IS ASTHMA AWARENESS MONTH!
More than 1 in 8 children are diagnosed with asthma and it is the leading cause of missed school days. Therefore, it is important for everyone to learn about asthma so that we can all work together to create asthma friendly places.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a breathing condition that affects the airways-the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. Certain triggers cause these air-ways to become red, swollen and filled with mucus. When this happens people with asthma may experience symptoms such as cough, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, wheeze and/or shortness of breath.
Follow these tips to help create asthma friendly places:
Ø If your child has asthma make sure you tell the school. Include information about asthma triggers, warning signs and medications.
Ø Be aware of common asthma triggers (colds/flu, strong smells, dust, furry animals, smoke, extremes in temperature) and make efforts to reduce them whenever possible.
Ø Encourage all children to be physically active, especially those with asthma. Speak to your child‘s doctor if asthma is interfering with physical activity.
Ø Know how to recognize worsening asthma and what to do in an emergency.
Visit www.asthmainschools.com for more information about Asthma Friendly Schools.
Contact the Lung Association’s Asthma Action Helpline at 1(800) 668-7682 for free resources and support in managing asthma.
Safety Drills
During the second term, a lockdown and three fire drills , as well as a hold and secure drill will be practiced with staff and students as per Board Policy. In the event of an actual evacuation or emergency situation, it is extremely important to be well prepared.
Cellphone Communication
Please note that cell phone communication is not permitted during the school day. If you need to connect with your children, please contact the school and we will support this communication. Students responding to text messages on their phones during class time provides a significant distraction from learning. We understand that many children have phones to let their parents know that they have arrived at school safely; the recommendation is that they inform you they are present, and then put their phones away.
We also remind parents and students that taking pictures, and recording video of students or teachers during the school day is prohibited, ESPECIALLY when there is no consent.
CYBERSAFETY
The Internet can be a great resource for children and adults. They can use it to research, communicate with others, and play interactive games. Sometimes that access can pose hazards. One area that we are seeing an increase in abuse is in the use of social media. That's why it's important to be aware of what your children see and hear on the Internet, who they meet, and what they share about themselves online. Just like any safety issue, it's wise to talk with your children about your concerns, take advantage of resources to protect them, and keep a close eye on their activities.
Accident Insurance
Please recall the student insurance information that was sent home earlier in the school year. Parents may send the completed forms directly to the insurance company if they wish coverage. In addition, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board does not provide accident insurance coverage for student injuries that occur on school premises or during school activities. You may purchase coverage for your child at insure my kids or by calling toll free at 1-800-463-KIDS (5437). Information about Student Accident Insurance will be available to parents/guardians on the Board’s Internet Main Page under the header “Parents.”
Custody of Children
On rare occasions, we are faced with difficult situations in which non-custodial parents arrive at school asking to visit their child or to take their child home after school. We are best able to serve and protect students when we are made aware of legal custody arrangements, visitation rights, and other special instructions. If legal custody matters affect your family, please ensure that our office and classroom teachers are aware of custodial arrangements between parents that may affect your child during school hours. Please ensure that a copy of the Court Order is on file at the school office.
GRADUATION - SAVE THE DATE - JUNE 19
Attendance and Punctuality
We ask that parents continue to support their children in their morning routines so that they can arrive to school on time. This ensures that your child learns an essential life skill, participates in the entire school day, and that disruptions to the learning environment are minimal.
Student Illness—Staying in During Recess
Cold and Flu season is upon us. We remind parents to please use discretion in keeping your children home to recover. A child who is too ill to go out for recess is too ill to be at school. Your co-operation to keep your child home when he/she is ill is greatly appreciated.
Use of Personal Electronic Devices at School
The Dufferin -Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges the value of the use of technology for learning. Students are permitted to register and use personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises and/ or board sanctioned events for educational purposes, under the direction of staff and only with parent/ guardian permission. Students may register their PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network. Students are required to adhere to the student “Personal Electronic Device Used with WI - FI Network Student Agreement” (GF 337) and the “Network User Application and Agreement” (GF066). Please be advised that the Dufferin -Peel Catholic District School Board will not be responsible for any cost incurred through the use of personal data plans.
PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere with learning; their use must comply with the Catholic Code of Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any personal communications (i.e. phone calls, text messages, etc.) will continue to be directed through the main office. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in a loss of PED privileges and/ or any other consequences deemed necessary by school administration.
The school principal may authorize limited acceptable uses of personal electronic devices during school -sanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose outside of instructional spaces and/ or in common areas. Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices.
In A Digital World
No Dogs on School Property
Please note that there are children who have allergies to animal hair, and who have a fear of dogs. In order to prevent a potential concern for our students, please do not bring your dog onto school property during school hours. Thank you for your continued cooperation
Bikes, Scooters and Rollerblades: Safety First
A safety reminder to all students that bikes, scooters and roller blades are to be walked both on and off the school property. Bikes are to be locked in the bike racks. We do not have facilities to store or secure roller blades or scooters, so there is an added risk of damage or theft and they are not encouraged to be brought to school. The school is not responsible for these items. Your cooperation is appreciated.
Medical Information
All students who have been diagnosed by a doctor with asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetes, or seizures must have completed the necessary Plan of Care Forms. These forms only need to be completed once (unless the diagnosis or medication has changed) and they will be stored in your child's OSR.
If your child requires an epi pen or puffer and they must carry it on them at all times this must be clearly indicated on the Plan of Care, otherwise it will be stored in the main office. The Authorization for the storage and administration of medication must be completed annually.
If your child requires any other type of medicine to be taken during school hours (Advil, Tylenol etc. ) you must complete the Authorization for the storage and administration of medication form and it will be stored in the main office.
Please send the required forms and medicine to the main office in a clearly labelled bag.
Kiss and Ride
A reminder about the Kiss and Ride. Thank you for driving all the way to the top of the kiss and ride lane, having children ready to exit vehicles from the right side and ensuring the continuous flow of cars. Please continue to follow the kiss and ride protocol. Wait in queue, do not jump the line for safety. If your child(ren) require assistance exiting the vehicle please consider parking in the lot. Do Not leave your vehicle parked, unattended in the kiss and ride lane and thank you for not blocking the bus. We appreciate your assistance and support. Remember always SAFETY FIRST. Thank you
Moving?
If you are planning to move out of the Father Daniel Zanon school area or change address within our boundaries, please let the office know as soon as possible. Please keep us informed of any address, phone number or medical changes for your children. It is of the utmost importance that our records be up to date. If your child should get sick or hurt, we must have accurate contact information.
