Hamline Family Newsletter
November 30-December 11, 2020
A Note from Principal Reilly
Please watch my weekly video posted on Seesaw for grades PreK-3 and Schoology for grades 4-5. Every Monday, I send a video to students and families that includes:
- weekly announcements,
- a Hamline Inquiry Weekly Challenge,
- an introduction to the staff member of the week
- weekly student shout outs
This week the Inquiry Challenge was "Build a Bridge". Students are challenged to create a bridge that is at least one foot off of the ground and that can hold 5 things. Once your child has completed the challenge, they can submit their work to me on the link included in the weekly video.
As always, please reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns.
Remember, near or far, you are always in our hearts.
In Partnership,
Principal Kristin Reilly
A Note from Assistant Principal Ewald

Distance Learning Resources
Student Competencies developed through Inquiry Based Learning
"Our job is not to prepare students for something; Our job is to help students prepare themselves for anything."
As we build our inquiry-based learning model at Hamline, we have identified five competencies that we want every student leaving Hamline with: Collaborators, Communicators, Problem Solvers, Creators, and Self and Community Aware. We believe these are the characteristics needed to prepare students for the 21st century.
Free and Reduced Lunch Application
Also, families must complete an application and qualify for free or reduced price meals to qualify for other assistance programs such as Metro Transit’s $1 Ride program, Comcast’s Internet Essentials, and some scholarships for summer camps
Starting Wednesday, December 2nd, I will be holding office hours every Wednesday & Thursday to help further assist students with their classwork and homework. These office hours will be from 9:00-10:00am & 2:00-3:00pm, via google meets. The Meet code is “Hamlinehelp”. Assistance will be provided on a first come, first serve basis. I ask that if a student is already working with me when you log on, please mute yourself until I am done working with that student.

Wellness Matters
With winter starting and day light saving making our days shorter, our children may lose time they used to spend outdoors. They may lead to them complaining that they feel bored. Boredom is not necessarily a bad feeling. When children get the opportunity to become bored, it will unlock their imagination and lead them to create something. Getting bored also allows the mind to wander which, in reasonable durations, can be good for our mental health and wellbeing. To help our children spend their time in meaningful ways, help them create a list of activities they can explore when they feel bored. Here is a list of activities I came across:
- Do a movement activity
- Write a letter
- Write a story
- Do some chores/organize your closet
- Have a dance party
- Go on a scavenger hunt
- Make a fort
- Create a vision board
- Collect and paint rocks
- Do a mandala art
- Bake something
- Read a book or a magazine
- Take a nap

School-Based Mental Health Partnership
Should you consider Mental Health Therapy for your child?
Life has been turned upside down for everyone. The current life events that are happening should not be processed alone. Therapy can help children begin to process and make sense of their worlds with a Mental Health Professional.
Paying attention to the mental health of children can help reduce problems at home, school, and in social interactions with others.
If you would like more information about starting therapy services for your child please reach out to our School Social Worker, Lynnette Medcalf at Lynnette.medcalf@spps.org or School Counselor, Kaltun Abdikarani at Kaltunabdikarani@spps.org. You can also fill out the help form for families on the Hamline website, spps.org/hamline.
