The Riverwalk Roar: February, 9th 2025
A Note from Dr. Compton
Happy Super Bowl Sunday, Pride!
I hope everyone had a great weekend and that your child(ren) got plenty of rest, even though it’s Super Bowl Sunday. Before I share a few words about Random Acts of Kindness Week, I wanted to give everyone a quick “new building” update.
Middle/High School
Since our last update, we have been waiting for a reinspection from the Office of School Facilities, which was supposed to take place last Monday. Well, on Monday, we were informed that she wasn’t able to make it due to a family emergency. We also found out on Monday that the State Fire Marshal wanted to come out for one final visit since two of the life safety devices (a smoke detector and a fire pull station) were changed, so he wanted to make sure our emergency drawings included these two changes. He came out on Friday and gave us the thumbs up.
Also, last Thursday, they began the elevator installation. It is expected to be completed on Tuesday of this week. We have since found out that the Office of School Facilities added a stipulation to our certificate of occupancy—that students cannot be in the building until the elevator is installed.
So where does that leave us? The elevator should be finished on Tuesday, and the third-party inspector should be by on Wednesday to confirm to the Office of School Facilities that the elevator is installed. As soon as this happens, we should have our certificate of occupancy by the close of business on Wednesday. At this point, we will let our teachers move their remaining items over, and we’ll return from the late winter break (2/24) in our new building. Sixth through ninth-grade families, we’ll send out additional information on the 21st regarding the “first day” in the new building.
Thank you all for your patience and understanding. You all have made this process bearable!
Random Acts of Kindness Week
Monday kicks off the National Random Acts of Kindness Week, with Monday, February 17th, being Random Acts of Kindness Day. This week is a great reminder of how small acts of kindness can create a ripple effect of positivity in our school and community. Whether it’s writing a kind note to a friend, helping a teacher, or simply sharing a smile, we encourage everyone to take part. Let’s make this week one filled with encouragement, gratitude, and generosity!
Final Thought
As we look ahead to the exciting changes with our new building and embrace the spirit of kindness this week, I want to take a moment to express my appreciation for each of you. Your support, patience, and commitment to our school community do not go unnoticed. Let’s continue to lift each other up, celebrate our progress, and make Riverwalk Academy an even better place for our students to learn and grow.
Have a wonderful week, Pride!

Mr. Prothero's 9th Grade Food and Nutrition class heats things up!
Thursday marked the first class where students actually cooked, and they were tasked with making a delicious breakfast while conducting food experiments. Team 1 made French toast and tested different toppings to evaluate taste. Team 2 worked on scrambled eggs, exploring how milk, hot sauce, cheese, and ham affected texture and flavor. Team 3 tackled bacon, experimenting with cooking methods in the grill and microwave. Afterward, each student wrote a paper detailing their tasks and results. Plus, they’re encouraged to take the AAA Food Handler certification course, a valuable addition to any resume, especially for future food industry careers!
At Riverwalk Academy, we are embracing National Random Acts of Kindness Week with the inspiring theme 'Step Into Kindness.' This week, we’re encouraging everyone to take small but meaningful steps toward making our school and community a kinder place. Whether it’s a simple smile, a compliment, or lending a helping hand, each act of kindness has the power to create a ripple effect that spreads positivity far and wide. As we step into kindness together, let's remember that these gestures—no matter how big or small—can brighten someone's day and build a culture of compassion. Let's continue to inspire each other and make kindness a part of everything we do!
