Surfside Shark Bites
Week of September 23-27, 2024
A Note From Principal Frandsen
Happy Friday, Surfside families!
What a great week! The middle schoolers conducted their annual egg drop challenge, the elementary students are excelling with their reading goals, and our high school students are doing a great job showing up and completing their assignments. On top of that, the Surfside Sharks soccer team went up against a very strong Vista team and took the draw with a score of 4-4.
For students enrolled in direct instruction, please keep up with your assignments and get any help you need. The quarter is over in 2 weeks. You work at a job to get paid, and you go to school to learn and earn credits. You got this!
Please consider joining Surfside's X (formerly Twitter) following at @SurfsideOUSD for regularly posted pics and updates.
Have an awesome weekend!

Weekly Construction Update
We are excited to report that construction is moving along beautifully. The parking lot is formed and much of the trenching is done. We expect to be using the new lot by or before mid year. The new campus will continue to emerge through August 2026. We will keep you posted.
Surfside on Display
Students were given a roll of toilet paper and the prompt to create something with Surfside Academy as the theme...they had only 10 minutes to complete the task which was presented to create a sense of community and fun.

K-5 Updates
Dear Families,
The school year has started off fantastically! Students are making great progress on their reading fluency and comprehension as I check in with them. Please continue to have them read 20+min at home to find books they enjoy. Most students who stay on pace throughout the year share with me that they work an additional 2 hours outside of class in order to complete the work. For others, it may be a little longer. As a reminder, parents are the main teacher in an Independent Study Program. We are here to support you and your child’s learning, please check over your child’s work to ensure they are understanding the concepts, and reach out to us if you need assistance. We are happy to assist you in any way.
Social Emotional Challenge:
Students learned about the Confidence Spot by Diane Alber in our Social Emotional Lesson this week and how to build it stronger so they can believe in themselves. Some suggestions the story gave to grow their confidence were: love, gaining knowledge, using words of affirmation, creativity, ambition, endurance, courage, and kindness. Find ways to build your confidence this week. What did you do? What did you learn about yourself? How did it make you feel? Do you feel more confident?
Important Dates:
September 30: Anti-Bullying 3-5
October 11: Unit 2 Packet Work Due and new packets available
Middle School News
Middle School…
The Parachute Egg Drop Challenge was a great experience for both the Design Engineers and the enthusiastic crowd of observers! Only one egg did not survive the official drop. Two eggs that survived the impact did not survive being removed from their restraints. We left with a greater confidence in the future of our engineers.
This week we began a focus on responsible use of A-I in the academic environment. Students are lucky to grow up in a time where the whole world is at their fingertips and we highly prioritize them learning to use the tools available to them with integrity.
Panorama Survey Time! Please have your student complete the survey by opening the Panorama icon on the student desktop. All surveys are due by 10/11/24 along with Month 2 work samples and P.E. logs.

New District Cell Phone Policy
"During the Day, Off and Away"
To create a focused learning environment and support student mental health, Oceanside Unified School District will now require all student cell phones to be off and stowed in backpacks upon entering campus and remain off until leaving. Exceptions are made for students with IEPs or 504 plans if specified for medical or anxiety-related needs, as determined by site administration. Classrooms have landlines for students to contact parents if needed, and students will have access to their phones during emergencies. The policy aims to reduce distractions, enhance engagement, and prevent cyberbullying, while also reducing the risk of phone theft or loss. Support and disciplinary actions for policy violations could include warnings, phone calls home, and phone confiscations, with increasing consequences for repeated offenses. OUSD is committed to student safety and mental health, fostering academic and emotional growth. For more details, refer to OUSD's Handbook.
Student Device Protection Plan
The window to purchase the device protection for only $20 will be closing on September 30th. Please take advantage of this opportuning to insure your device. It will cost YOU more than $20 to get it repaired.
We highly recommend taking advantage of this affordable plan to safeguard your child's Chromebook against accidental damage or theft. The cost of repairs for Chromebooks can range from $40 to $400, but for only $20 per school year, the Device Protection Plan provides coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage or theft.
Purchasing the plan is simple and convenient. You can do so online with a credit card or electronic check through our secure payment portal at www.myschoolbucks.com.
The enrollment window for the Device Protection Plan is limited, so we encourage you to sign up as soon as possible. Invest in your child's learning experience and ensure their Chromebook is protected throughout the school year.
2024-2025 Student Accident and Sickness Insurance
The safety of our students is of critical importance to all of us and we want to protect them from injury. Even so, accidents do happen (at school and elsewhere) and required medical care can be expensive. Please know that Surfside does not assume responsibility for such costs but does offer you access to several student accident insurance plans for voluntary purchase. Details can be found in this linked brochure/enrollment form - English (SPANISH brochure/enrollment form).
For more detailed information, please see this letter - ENGLISH (Parent Letter - SPANISH).
