VOGELTOWN SCHOOL - THE 'VS' WAY
Care for the land, Care for the people, Go Forward
Our Values: I.R.O.C.K
Inclusive, Respectful, Original, Courageous, Kind
Whakauru, Whakaute, Tipu, Kaha, Atawhai
SCHOOL GOAL: 'SHOWING KINDNESS - MANAAKITANGA'
WHAT: Kindness or Manaakitanga, is showing care and concern for other people, animals and the environment – ‘caring for the people’. It is part of our school vision and one of our values.
Kindness is especially important at the start of the year. We are all a bit nervous about the new year, our new class, our new teacher and making new friends, so we show kindness.
WHY: We need kindness for people to ‘get on’ and relate to each other, animals and the environment. “Manāki Tangata, Manāki whenua - To care for the people and to care for the land” this is a big part of our school vision.
HOW: By welcoming new people to our school – making new friends
By making everyone feel welcome to your class or our school
By taking notice if things need your care
By treating other people the way you would like to be treated
SIGNS OF SUCCESS:
You practise environmentally friendly habits such as recycling
You take excellent care of your friends, new people
You accept that people are different
You have respect for the feelings and well being of others
KIA ORA WHANAU, FROM MR O
Unfortunately this term we have not managed to have a 'full community event' for our whanau - we will rectify this in Term 2 with two more whanau events, syndicate classroom open nights and a Home and School quiz night planned for the last week of Term 2.
Over Term 1 we have covered a lot of learning and a lot of traditional Vogeltown events. We got to do camp for our Paetoki team this term, delivery of a new classroom at the Junior school, whanau and syndicate tryathlons, learning conferences, full school and syndicate assemblies and culminated today with our Whanau 'Sing Off' and ANZAC assembly. What a great term!
Term 2 looks to be just as action packed! We have some more school events happening with the Rippa Rugby tournament, Interschool sports, Young Leaders trip to Palmerston North, Pink Shirt Day, Mathathon, Life Education at school, Matariki week, the School's birthday, Huatoki domain open day, Jump Jam at Mountainairs basketball game and a VS quiz night! Of course, there will be a lot of learning in amongst these wonderful events.
A massive thanks to our community for your support this term. We are so proud to have such a wonderful community. Our focus this term has been around our school value of 'Kindness' this has been great to see happening at school and modelled by our parents/whanau. Next term we are focusing on another of our school values 'Respect'.
Have a fantastic holiday break with your family and whanau. We will see you all back on Monday 3 May for the start of Term 2.
Aroha nui, Mr O

Thanks again team.
WHANAU EVENT - SING OFF 2021
Our Sing Off was our new school song - Te Kawa o Huatoki. Each whanau sang their version of the song in front of all the other whanau - it was epic!
Our judge for the Sing Off was Whaea Unity, who wrote the song and the melody. Unity was impressed with our singing and passion for the new school song. Overall, the Kahurangi team won the Sing off event - Tu Meke the 'Blue brigade'! See some photos below of the event.

ANZAC ASSEMBLY 2021
The rain held off and we had our assembly on the front court in front of the senior side flag pole. The Class Reps ran the assembly - they did an amazing job! You will see the white crosses under the flag pole - there are 30 of them. If you are around the school over the holidays, please have a look - if you see any fallen over or broken, please put them back or fix them up for us - thanks whanau!
At the end of our ANZAC assembly, we had a 'guard of honour' for Mrs Stirling as today was Emma's last day.
See the photos below.

VOGELTOWN HOME AND SCHOOL
Thanks to all the members who turned up for our last meeting. Unfortunately, due to weather, we had to again cancel our Whanau Fiesta picnic. We hope to have a Picnic in term 4 to celebrate the end of the year.
To replace the Whanau Fiesta, we decided to use the sausages that were donated from Hellers for a week long sausage sizzle - this was amazing and we had great support for this event. Thanks to Vogeltown Countdown who sponsored fresh bread everyday for the sausage sizzles! We have raised over $1,000 from the sausage sizzle - thanks whanau! Special thanks to Mr George for cooking each day!
Next term we have a Mathathon fundraiser - more information will come out in week 2 about this. We also have a Quiz Night scheduled for the 6th July (the last week of Term 2). More information will come out about this during the term too.
Have a great break whanau,
VS Home and School team.
GREENIES GROUP - PROPAGATION WITH BILL
This term we have already had 2 propagation sessions with the Greenies Group students. They have been involved in planting tawa seed and transplanting a wide range of local Huatoki plants, all grown by the children in previous years from seed collected in the area. This has included kohekohe, pigeonwood/porokaiwhiri, kahikatea, pukatea, mahoe, tawa and titoki. In total over 190 plants have been bagged up and 2 large seed trays planted by the children during the propagation sessions. The children always take great care and love working with the plants. You can see them in action in the photos below.
Once again, massive thanks to Bill Clarkson and Dani Melody for helping keep the Greenies on track at Vogeltown.
MR O'S FRIENDLY REMINDERS

2) Please also remember, to scan the Covid-19 QR code when you come in to the school. if you are signing your child(ren) in/out, you will still need to scan the QR code. Thanks heaps for stopping this virus in NZ.
Thanks whanau
Stay safe and be kind to each other. Thank you for the ongoing support of Vogeltown School, we appreciate the community we live in. Have a great Holiday break!
