Message from TVEA President Edgar Diaz, December 11, 2023
General Membership Leadership Council of TVEA
Our first LC open meeting for members was a success. The meeting was held at the Old Town Blues Club with catering and music afterward and drew nearly 80 members and a few guests. New TVUSD Superintendent Dr. Gary Woods stopped by and visited with members all while enjoying some great barbeque!
At the meeting Leadership Council adopted our mission statement:
Through the strength of our collective voice, Temecula Valley Educators Association advocates for the continuous advancement and improvement of teaching and working conditions for the educators and support professionals of the Temecula Valley Unified School District, fostering personal and professional growth for members and increasing opportunities for student success.
TVEA Committees
The TVEA committees on Elections and Grievance have filled their spots! For Elections Chris Lindberg (Chair) and members Robin Orner, Carmen Camacho and Donna Sanford will oversee elections for the coming year. Ashley Vella and Christa Rudd are joining Grievance as members.
Insurance Advisory (chaired by Lynn Breen) and LCAP (chaired by Julianne Dickenson) continue to look for support to provide bargaining and consulting to TVUSD in these programs. LCAP needs general ed teacher participation. Member Engagement is back to pre-pandemic activities and needs secondary teacher participation to reach out and connect with members. Next semester TVEA Membership Coordinator Claudia Candray will relaunch the TVEA Ovation program to recognize members at our sites. If you would like to participate, reach out to the committee chairs and take a look at the TVEA calendar for their next planning meeting.

TVUSD School Board Advocacy
Tomorrow, 12/12 is the first meeting with new Supt. Gary Woods. TVEA has a spotlight, please join President Edgar Díaz to welcome him to the district. He already made the rounds to many school sites including the TVEA social last week.
The community-led One Temecula Valley PAC submitted more than 20% of the required signatures to recall Board President Joseph Komrosky last week. The county has to verify the signatures if it qualifies for ballot consideration.
TVUSD Trustee agenda has a couple items with TVEA interest.
A) This is the organizational meeting where the Board President and Clerk are elected.B) Consent Calendar #9 - Budgets $65,000 for continuous EMF monitoring at sites.
C) Consent Calendar #15 - Budgets $35,000 for a board meeting stage and a new dais. How that impacts the conference room for professional development training and other meetings is unknown.
D) Action Item #1 - Board Policy (BP) 6000 – Concepts and Roles. Motion to waive the second reading and to adopt the proposed revised Board Policy 6000 Concepts and Roles. There is also a rubric to evaluate instructional materials that was developed with teacher participation, but this agenda item makes not mention of it
“The district’s education program, including all of its instructional materials, shall also comply with legal requirements and shall not include pervavsive pornography, erotica, graphic descriptions or depictions of violence (including sexual violence), inappropriate vulgarity or profanity, or other obscene material. The district’s program and instructional materials shall be age appropriate and course related. The Board recognizes that determinations regarding appropriateness and compliance with this policy with respect to the program and instructional materials often must be made case-by-case and in context, and the Board encourages discussion amongst administrators, teachers, parents, and the Board itself to facilitate such determinations.”
E) Action item #2 - Adopt a revised Governing Board Handbook
“Public Comments – At each meeting, members of the public have an opportunity to speak to the Board. Thirty minutes are normally allocated to public comments on agendized and non-agendized items, with each speaker limited to normally three minutes. The Board President will (STRIKETHROUGH) seek consensus of the Board (REVISE TO) decide whether or not to extend the total time for comments beyond thirty minutes or reduce the time allotted to each speaker when efforts are desired to increase the number of speakers heard.”
d) Action Item #5 - TVUSD presents the First Interim Financial Report to track TVUSD’s student attendance, revenue, expenditures.
